Hello everyone,
As we all know, terrible things are happening in Ukraine, with an estimated 3.5 million refugees already fleeing the country, mostly women and children. (U.N. figures from 22nd of March)
Hearing about big donation drives, I always felt it was the thing that big charity organizations and corporations do, and not really the "little guys". But of course this is wrong, after all ... "every little bit helps". If I think that for the price of one MtG prerelease pack, an NGO could provide a bowl of hot soup for a dozen mothers and their children at a border camp, it's clear that every dollar can indeed provide immediate, tangible relief.
We also sometimes have the feeling that wars are bad things in far away places, that other people are affected by. This is of course also false... the world is a very small place. Deckbox as a company is registered in the town of Baia Mare in the north of Romania, where I grew up. So the address listed on the deckbox about page and 2 border posts with Ukraine [1] [2] , are separated by 40 measly miles. A bicycle ride away.
With all this in mind I thought we should also try to make a difference. It's not only the corporations that do fundraisers, but also tiny one-person businesses, building a niche website and a community of people collecting trading cards. :)
If you would like to chip in please join me on the Global Giving website, that have aggregated a list of NGOs and charitable organizations in Ukraine and the neighbouring countries that help with refugee shelter, food, clean water, hygiene and health essentials, medicine and more.
I will start it off with $500, and pledge on behalf of deckbox.org to match all your donations up to another $4000, that will be transferred to the Red Cross and UNICEF , that operate relief camps at the Romania-Ukraine border and send humanitarian transports to affected cities.
