Yeah, I've been guilty of accidentally overtrading.  Especially with Lili of the Veils.  I had to go out and buy one from my LGS so I didn't have to feel like shit or trade one of my foil ones smile

In a recently flurry of activity, I went from a playset of Chandra, the Firebrand plus one foil to having just one! I had to buy one at my LGS this past weekend just to top off my preferred deck for the day (a variation of my Krenko's Dance Party deck).

Yeah whenever I make a trade I always hit that I sent the cards even though they technically don't get picked up till the next morning to make sure I don't offer something twice. I also make sure to remove things from my wishlist so that I don't end up with seven of the same card, learned my lesson the hard way.

That works if sending simultaneously.  If waiting for the other party to ship first, it could be days or weeks before the cards are received and you ship yours.  I had this happen recently with a fairly large trade.  The other party had no feedback when we agreed on a configuration.  He had a delay getting them out, and when they arrived, he had missed a few cards.  By the time the rest got to me and I shipped, a month had passed.  In the interim, I ended up agreeing to trade a few cards that I had intended to keep, because that one pending trade had not come off my trade list.  In the end, I ended up marking it shipped early (with the other trader's consent) just so I wouldn't have more problems.

Why not just mark it shipped right away? I've had a trade or two fall through. I don't enjoy re-entering cards that were already in my inventory.

I'm hoping that Sebi and the crew will eventually add support for one's inventory, wishlist, and tradelist to reflect pending trades.

No worries. I enjoy the extra information and am learning more by the day.

Are planeswalkers common in EDH decks?

Thanks, for pointing out the problem with Feeling of Dread, by the way.

I'll need to look at some of those other cards.  I've started with what I have on-hand.  smile

I've found a similar problem where a card is not imported correctly. When I put 'Xathrid Gorgon' in the multi-card import, it's not recognized. When I put it in the single-card input box, it works fine.

If that problem is consistent (happens each time you try it, after a reboot), I recommend putting it in a new thread.

Interesting that mono-red Goblin tokens would get mentioned.  I started working with Gisela, and quickly realized I could make two EDH decks--one white/red and one mono-red.  The mono-red deck has Krenko and token generation.

Please take a look at my first two efforts, and let me know what you think:

White-Red Angels (Commander: Gisela, Blade of Goldnight)

Mono Red (Commander: Krenko, Mob Boss)

That's a very helpful thread, as have been the other replies.  Thanks, everyone!

Okay.  I've been playing quite a while now, but until recently all were casual/kitchen table matches.  Over the past nine months or so, I've been enjoying FNM and Saturday Magic, but have only ever played Standard in sanctioned events.  Some of the Saturday group want to play Commander more.  I've never played that format, but have some basic knowledge of it, and am looking for some tips on building an EDH deck.

Here's what I know:

  • 100 card deck (including the commander)

  • Not more than one of each card except for basic lands

  • One Legendary Creature as the commander

  • All other cards in the deck are limited to the colors of the commander's mana cost

Here's what I don't know/need to know:

  • What's the general pace? Do things typically get rolling early, or do things really start rolling on or after turn three?

  • What breakdown of land/creatures/other spells is recommended?

  • Can any other Legendary Creatures be included in the deck, or only the commander?

  • While things vary with each hand, typically how many turns do you see in a commander match?

  • Because the card variety is so great, are there any construction tips for achieving consistent results?

  • Does the deck size/play format affect how you look at your mana curve (i.e., do you include more higher cost creatures because you are more likely to get them into play)?

Your input will be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: For now, my options are limited to the cards I currently own.  I will look at acquiring other recommended cards after I have a chance to play the format a few times, to decide whether or not I like it.  If able to provide feedback based on my current inventory options, alongside any other general recommendations, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If convinced the other trader just grabbed the cards and is not honoring the agreement, you can contact your local post office and file a mail fraud complaint.  I would hold that out as a last resort, though.  Hopefully it is just an unexpected delay.  I hope you get the cards soon.

Thanks, sebi! I'm here long-term, so I can wait.  smile

Clarify for me: what defines "nice sleeves"? Artwork on the back? Sleeves by a specific vendor? Need a specific quantity?

Sometimes I come across cards in foreign languages that I cannot read.  If I also do not know the card associated with the artwork, I need to search to find the card by doing a web search on the card number.  Having the ability to search by card number would be really helpful when entering unfamiliar foreign cards, or in cases where the translated names are not literal word-for-word translations.

It would help not only English speaking/reading members who are entering foreign cards, but would also help members of other tongues quickly find cards based on the number, without needing to know the English words (or without having to filter by edition, color, type, and mana cost just to browse through the results).

Most spammers use automated tools to register for accounts and to send messages.  Throw in any sort of manual process, and it stops the lion's share.

I do think it would be appropriate to limit the number of posts any user can submit in a short period of time, both across threads and in any single thread.  Looking at the many spam messages that have been hitting the system lately, they seem to come in batches, with many messages posted a little more than a minute apart before a lull and then seeing the pattern again.  While adding logic to combat the spammers may inconvenience, at times, legitimate users of the site, I believe most would give up a little convenience for the sake of getting rid of the spam schlock.

The following ideas are presented as a launching point for a discussion/consideration of options.  They are not a be all/end all list.  However, the first one may really be the best.

Ideas:

  • Prevent any new user from posting unless they have a valid, populated Inventory.  It could be as simple as one card, or could require that a set number of cards be listed.

  • Limit the number of posts any user can submit in a set timeframe (e.g., not more than one every two minute, not more than three in five minutes).

  • Impose CAPTCHA verification on multiple posts in a set amount of time.

  • Impose CAPTCHA verification on all posts.

  • Start requiring more interactive steps before accounts are considered active and eligible for posting messages.

  • Send an email message requiring user action if a threshold number of posts is made in a set period of time.

  • Develop a user flagging system for spam posts.  If a threshold number of spam flags are submitted against a single user account in a defined window of time, the system automatically blocks the account and flags existing posts for review.  Alternatively, if enough spam reports are recorded, the system could delete all content under that user's account.

You guys have the logical argument down.

I guess I was just looking at a gold bordered Mogg Flunkies in my binder and pondering things.  You are limited to four of any card in a tournament play, and those older cards would only be valid in formats like vintage and legacy where playsets of those rarer cards are fairly common in competitive decks.

Oh, well! I probably won't bother collecting any more of them anyway.

Something will need to be done to require additional verification before new accounts will be allowed to post--or even logic preventing too many posts in too short a period of time (anyone use Slashdot? they have a decent system).

These spammers are becoming more and more frequent.

You guys should really look at some sort of reply-required verification system for new accounts.  The spam problem is starting to get out of hand.

For how many sleeves are you looking? One hundred? One thousand? I have 100 Mayfair Games MTG sleeves available (only used once this past weekend for the Magic Celebration mini master event).

If looking for large quantities (e.g., 1,500+), I can refer you to a seller I've purchased from on on eBay.  I buy from him when purchasing 1,500 or more sleeves (UltraPro Deck Protector, plain black or just about any standard color they have).  I've puchased upwards of 4,000 sleeves from the guy--he has great prices and will combine shipping if ordering multiple lots (15 packs--750 sleeves--in a lot).

Has anyone seen a decent rationale as to why WotC bars gold bordered cards from sanctioned play, even if those cards are in opaque sleeves?

I can understand banning them if the backs are visible (unsleeved, or in translucent sleeves), since the unique backs could give the player an advantage (know what card is up next, if only a few cards in a deck have the alternate backs), but why ban them if using opaque sleeves.  They seem to be the same size, weight, and thickness. Other than just making it easier on the judges/officials, has anyone heard any good rationale why they are banned?

I appreciate the candid feedback.  I have had trades up to a 1:1.5 value proposition.  Some cards (e.g., Cavern of Souls) are likely to retain a high value for a long time, and may even go up, while the vast majority of commons/uncommons will remain 10 cent cards.    I'll need to rethink things if it seems unreasonable.

Personally, if I could give up $80 in low value cards (perhaps 150 cards or more) to get a $40 card, I'd be all in.

Okay, I've put some additional thought into this and have worked out a tentative ratios for defining values for trade downs.  Look at what I've devised, and let me know if it seems reasonable.

If you trade with equal (or nearly equal) value (card for card),
we will always trade 1:1 unless we negotiate something different.
If you want to trade at a different value ratio, use the following
table as a starting point.

For the table below, you are trading for one of my higher value cards.

Qty.
(yours) Value
-------------------
2-3 1:1
4-5 1:1.25
6-10 1:1.5
Many 1:2

That means, if you want to trade $10 cards for a $40 card of
mine, I'd expect to see at least five $10 cards on your side of
the deal (1.25 x $40 = $50).

If you want to trade a bunch of $4 cards for the same $40 card,
I'd expect at least $60 of $4 cards.

If you want to trade a bunch of low value cards (<$4) for the
same $40 card, I'd expect at least $80 in value.

Now, if your trade proposal has a mix of card values
(Ex.: 1@$10, 4@$4, and many low value cards), we'll need to
negotiate the value proposition, but it likely be slightly higher
than 1:1.5 (perhaps 1:1.7).

If you are trading for multiple cards of mine, I'll match up cards
close in value at 1:1 and then consider the value proposition for
the balance.
