I am out of it I apologise, completely forgot about the decklist. I'm rather torn between them since they both run slightly different ways.

These are all my personal opinion so take them as you will.

1) All American is played EVERYWHERE. Same colors, slightly different cards, same boring games.
2) Bloom Titan is extremely dependent on having an Amulet of Vigor. Without it the deck slows to a crawl. That being said, I also love combo decks and played Scapeshift for a couple years and loved it. The possibility of a T2 Primetime looks super fun.
3) Haven't played with or against Bant so I can't really comment on it.

I personally have the most fun when I play decks that nobody is expecting to see. My deck of choice right now is 8-rack.

popular decks tend to be boring, especially control decks.

Titan Bloom drew me in once I understood how it ran, though I am unsure of how it would run without amulet considering it has no was of getting it if there is not one already. I'd say I have a bit of a sweet spot for combo as well since I currently am running living end, and I have combo elves as well. Only problem I have with them is that if you don't get the combo going, you're usually done for.

I haven't played it either, so I now nothing about it as well.

I am currently looking for cards for a few of my modern decks.

Inkmoth Nexus x1
Might of Old Krosa x3
Merrow Reejerey x2
Chalice of the Void x2
Aether Vial x1
Grafdigger's Cage x1

Lower Priority that I am less likely to have the trade fodder for:
Arid Mesa x4
Scalding Tarn x4
Misty Rainforest x4
Verdant Catacombs x4
Noble Hierarch x4

Im currently stretched across many modern decks, and I just can't seem to see which one I will like the most. I've been looking though decklists of all, and here is where I am:

Boremandos:
http://deckbox.org/sets/723053
It seems like a heavier creature based RWU Control deck. I like it, though I do not know if I may be better off just going straight up control with it, though I do have most of the add-on creatures already.

Titan Bloom:
List #1 http://deckbox.org/sets/723048
List #2 http://deckbox.org/sets/723050
I've always had a sweet-spot for combo decks, and this ones mana ramp is just insane. I currently am undecided upon what list to pursue, thus why both lists are posted. My only issue with this deck is that it seems very open to control magic and removal. Though Hive Mind may be good for that role, I do not really understand it? Also, it seems rather iffy on hands?

Bant:
http://deckbox.org/sets/727053
This list is the most far-fetched of all od them for me as of now. Its quite expensive, but I like it. If there was a tuned down version I would possibly be able to make it without giving up a large chunk of my collection.

I am open to all suggesions, critisism, and deck ideas that may suit me!

Vines of Vastwood x4
Groundswell x4

Wild Defiance x3
Inkmoth Nexus x4
Pendelhaven x2

Merfolk:(Higher prioity over the others)

Sadly it's more U/W control with a splash of red, but that's about the best Izzet has these days... at least to my knowledge...

Control is quite a powerful arctype right now, and I would steer him that way, but he is more driven towards the Izzet scheme, and he likes it so far, so all I can do is help him along it.

Now that looks more of what I was looking for! He found a list he likes, so this may be a back up list to work off of. I wouldn't mind building it...mostly because of the Turn//Burn kill! But I also think its a pretty solid. cool

It's actually been quite a while since Izzet really had something solid (back before rotation during the Delver days).  You should look on TCGPlayer and there was some sort of an American control deck that placed well recently that uses Keranos, God of Storms to push things through... but at current, that's the best performing "Izzet" deck that I know of in Standard.

If I get a chance I'll dig to see if I can find the list, but it placed two people in the top 16 of either a GP or SCGOpen just a few weeks ago.

I'll take a look, but I don't really know what to look for considering I myself have not seen one the ran well in a while. I will see if RWB appeals to him, which it actually might, which may give way to a stronger deck. Keranos, God of Storms almost seems to be needed in any form of izzet-ish deck from how he runs. I would really like to see that list to help determine what to do.

I have a friend that hasn't played much since the last time he played standard in zendikar/scars of mirrodin times, and he has grown an interest with magic since now that he's back from college there's a LGS to play at. So far I think he's interested in an izzet deck. I know it's rather vague, but I can't really say I know what playstyle he wants. Does anybody know of any decently performing decklists I would be able to work with?

After rethinking it, i think TRZ is probably right.  Either go all in on thassa as an enabler add 1-2 more of her, or go with spreading sees.  IMO, I like her since you can still cast her with aether vial and she does help smooth your draws, but modern is a "turn 4 format" so you need be able to stop someone's wincon on turn 4 or enable your own.

I think if you went with thassa it gives you a little more room for other tempo/control cards, but the downside is it may be a tad slower/more mana intensive.

The more I look at her, the more I see she isn't as needed as I would think she might be. Spreading Seas is deffinantly a needed part of the deck, and I do intend on running it once I get my hands on a set of them. In modern it really is rather dire to either turn off their chances of winconning, or stopping them all together.

Im not really sure what Thassa adds to the deck. Alot of decks run Islands OR you have Spreading Seas so all your stuff is unblockable already. Is an out of Tribe Scry effect worth the slot?

The scry is actually pretty nice if I can remember it for mid to late game to keep me off something like aethervial, or hitting another land I may not need. And if she is active, she's an indestructible, unblockable 5/5. Sure she may not add to the tribal aspect much, but she has a decent amount to make up for it. She's kind of in between in my mind when I compare the slot to certain cards still.

Its certainly comparable to something like Think Tank that was pretty powerful in standard at the time. Im just not sure about in Merfolk. I havent piloted a merfolk deck though so Im not sure if Im the best person to help you.

Once you have run it, it's a bit easier to see its usefulness, but really it isn't a hung impact overall, mostly just good for the scry-draw.

I like the 1/1 unblockable Triton Shorestalker. Early pressure is always nice, and it puts them on a fast clock once the lords are on the field.

You know, I considered him, but he isn't nessisary when I run Cursecatcher since he is a lot like him with a bit better of an effect than unblockable. And since Curscatcher is quite often a 1/1, the unblockable doesn't really come in handy till a Lord hits the board to pump him, and that is not very likely with the ammount of countermagic and removal that gets thrown at them to keep them from sticking. Nontheless I love the card, and it has a place in a casual merfolk deck for me!

ideally you're using aethervial to put your dudes out right? So  i feel like the sure thing in mana leak is good as it can stop  some of the combos if you catch them without mana to pay... heck even making them pay the 3 mana might mean they can't finish the combo that turn.

I like MOW because lots of answers for him in modern are red,IE: bolt, electrolyze, galvanic blast, etc... they have to path him or use something like terror/doomblade.  Limits the answers they can have.

It packs alot more of a punch than Spell Pierce IMO taking care of combo, and the hilarity of mana leaking a mana leak in control! I like playing Remand, but only as a 4-of, which limits my deck a bit too much.
I must say the pro-red is very good, and actually helped me win against a control deck. He is quite worth the 4 mana he is, just a little unsure of the openess i have after playing him, but thats just a play style preferance.

Looks okay, I'm not a modern expert or a merfolk expert, but I've seen similar lists around.  The last version I played against had master of waves in it.  Have tried that?  It seemed good.

here's a similar list.

http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=7413& … 4&f=MO

The current version I am running until I get more of the parts has the full three in it, and I guess I should maybe keep them. I have a bit of a focus on control when I play with it, but I need to drop it since its a tribal build. Usually since I only have 3 of the 4 vials I need, I have to hard-cast him, which I see as a small issue, but as long as one of the 4 lands is a cavern I should be good.
Now the spell pierce I am not sure if I would run over mana leak since it only hits non-creature, where as mana leak gets it all for 1 colorless more.

I've worked towards a merfolk deck for many many years, and I have almost succeeded, but I am at a cross roads with design. Here is my current design: http://deckbox.org/sets/693669

I know there are cards that are better suited for the slots I have taken up with others, but I am not sure if they are best used by what i have chosen.
Any suggestions for the main board and the side board are welcome!

cool

Edit: Recently opened some Conspiracy packs and opened a Dack Fayden along with his Emblem that are up for trade!
I also am not completely driven to complete merfolk, but if you have other things on my wishlist I may be interested still.
I am nearly done with my merfolk, I just need a few more cards, though some of them are for testing (cards with " * " next to them are higher priority):
Cosi's Trickster x3
*Merrow Reejerey x2*
*Silvergill Adept x4*
Coralhelm Commander x2
*Phantasmal Image x1*
*Kira, Great Glass-Spinner x1*

*Hurkyl's Recall x3*
*Spreading Seas x4*
*Unified Will x1*

*Aether Vial x1*
Relic of Progenitus x4
*Grafdigger's Cage x1*
Tormod's Crypt x2

*Mutavault x1*
*Cavern of Souls x1*
Tectonic Edge x2

Sorry I should be more clear. They are 'filler' in that they are the left over flex slots seperate of the main deck strategy.

If your main trouble is artifacts have you considered main deck ingot chewer?

I haven't really thought about it since there is mostly one deck that has artifacts that I face, aside from affinity sometimes. If I main boarded them they'd be pretty dead in other matches.

I mean its down to personal opinion. But Shriekmaw basically gives you a nice turn 2 play to rid yourself of pesky annoyances when needed or buy yourself a few extra life. Then it hits the yard and comes back latter to help clear the board of anything that did happen to make it back for your opponent.

Its not terribly creative but I honestly think Spike Feeder and Shriekmaw are the standard filler slots right now. That doesnt mean you have to use them but it means you should look at them as the base line. Compare what you're filling to them and see how it works out.

Im not saying Lili can't work and by all means 1-2 could fit the deck just fine I just think its worth reconsidering for other options.

I would have it mainboard, but I just don't like the odds of hitting something I can't touch really. But now that my LGS has Modern Tournements on Wednesdays there are fewer people, and mostly people I struggle against.

What exactly are they a filler for? Because I have Spike Feeder as a Main Board and I wouldn't mind knowing of a card that can out-do it. I've seen Kitchen Finks in its place, but I doubt that is the card you are referring to?

It was just an idea someone came up with, and seemed someone worth looking into, but not completey convincing.

Edit:
I use Beast Within and Simian in, and I haven't really given thought to Dismember, but looking at the decks around, it wont help too much since Wurmcoil is the main creature concern lately. Have considered Kitchen Finks though.
