Topic: [Modern] [Opinions] Mono Black Control

Hi guys, new to the forum and kind of new to Magic in general. I really enjoy the flavour of a black deck and I like the idea of one that fits the control style of play. I'd really appreciate some help and feedback on the deck I plan to use as my main.

This is what i've initially put together. I do own most of the cards in it, though i'm happy to spend another 20 or so dollars on it. I play in a casual environment and we mostly stick to the modern format. I don't think anyone will be running anything too high level anytime soon.

The deck i've built i've attempted at building around countering the aggro/exalted decks that most of my group seem to flock towards. I'd like to have it be suitable though to take on other deck types as well. Its only a matter of time someone tries something different and we're always getting new people in the group.

Ideally I imagine the deck generally being pretty defensive for the first few turns, with all the removal. Later turns i'd like to play the Demons and use them to finish off my opponent. I'd like to be able to have a few Desecration Demons out at once as well as some of the removal still available so as to negate the cards drawback.

Really appreciate any feedback you guys can provide!

Cheers,
Acron

That list looks very playable.  I'm not a huge fan of Desecration Demon myself, but I love Phyrexian Obliterator and Abyssal Persecutor.  Although I don't play modern, so I don't know how Persecutor would play without Cabal Therapy, but you do have Geth's Verdict already.

Some things I used to play in mono black when I had monoblack standard decks: Lashwrithe (better than Nightmare Lash since it's a living weapon, but both turn your life link guys into bigger threats) or Batterskull. (Is Vault Skirge still a solid 1 drop?)

Distress Inquisition of Kozilek and Surgical Extraction are also good control cards.

I'd split the 4x Doom Blade mainboard into 2x Doom Blade 2x Go For the Throat.  Also Murder on the sideboard just got an upgrade in Hero's Downfall.

Re: [Modern] [Opinions] Mono Black Control

Thanks for the substantial reply! Definitely a lot of food for thought here. I completely overlooked all those Phrexian cards, love that they can be played using life for mana, I'll definitely be making room for Lashwrithe as well as Surgical Extraction.

Go for the Throat looks great as well. I had murder as an answer to the other black decks, but I like that this does the same thing for less mana.

Cheers and Thanks again.
