Notes

Tayam is a super fun commander - there are plenty of graveyard recursion commanders, but Tayam works in a quirky way that I just really dig. Stuff like Muldrotha is very cEDH and I dunno. Tayam is just cool - I'm also the only one I've ever seen play a deck with her. The way this is built, you also get the benefit of having most of the deck under 3 MV.

Here's how it works: get creatures out onto the board and start piling counters on to them - +1/+1 counters are the standard, but Tayam's vigilance counters get spread around too. There aren't too many cards in the deck that Tayam can't recycle, so once you get her out onto the board you can start plucking counters off and building the board - she recurs to the battlefield so you can have the ETB goodness too. Eventually you want to get something like Song of Freyalise or Vastwood Surge (along with Gnarlid Colony/Pridemalkin and like Unbreakable Formation) and have your crew all +1/+1'd out and swing for lethal.

It's admittedly a little bit of a shaky plan, but I have such an affinity for this deck as it was pretty much brewed from scratch and has done a lot of cool stuff in its lifetime. Also, Wizards loves counters and keeps printing cool toys for this deck and will probably keep doing it for years to come.

--------------------------------------------

This deck, as currently constructed, has the potential to do some crazy things. But I keep feeling like it would be better to really go all-in on the Tayam recycling engine; it just seems like there are too many 4+ CMCs to roll over when digging. The good part about Tayam is that you can always grab a land, so you're ramping for 3 mana if nothing else. And since it's EDH, paying 3 to ramp is usually a decent option.

A couple of cards will solve some major issues, and they should be on their way - Branching Evolution is one, because it's a counter doubler that's Tayam-eligible, and Eternal Witness is the other, because it is also Tayam-eligible and recurs stuff that Tayam can't. Doubling Season/Primal Vigor will also be nice, since every kind of counter is being doubled. The stuff I don't have yet, even on the way, would be a KHM Vorinclex and a Luminous Broodmoth, both of which fit in very nicely; the Broodmoth especially so since it adds counters and works beautifully with things dying. (Should make a note that Abzan Falconer is a nonbo with the Broodmoth. Just in case I pick one up.)

    Lae'zel, Pir, Jugan Defends (I think it would be cool, and probably useful as well), and Calix are the ones I think I want to add the most. I'll see if GMR can provide them.

    I also think Corpsejack Menace is coming out. The effect is powerful, but there's better choices (see above) and Branching Evolution fits here so much better. That mana value is a killer here, when everything depends on being able to recycle stuff.

  • efaithfarm (29-Jan-2024 18:07)

    Interesting that I put Grismold back in - I remember doing that - even though it was listed as #firstcuts. I guess it was in here before! It works with the plan pretty well of "make something or everything really big and swing with haste", especially because he grows very organically and has trample.

  • efaithfarm (29-Jan-2024 17:04)

    Lae'zel is a card that needs to be added here. I don't think it's even all that expensive.

  • efaithfarm (29-Jan-2024 17:00)

    Ran this deck on Friday night in the second game and did pretty well, to the point that I had an Ashnod's Altar and Tayam'd into Weaponcraft Enthusiast. The problem was that I couldn't find a way to actually win the game, even with the ability to go through the entire deck and dump it onto the field. So...let's find a win-con!

    Looking in to some combos and such, and decided that adding Crashing Drawbridge was a good first step - that way if you're adding counters to a bunch of creatures or making tokens or whatever you'll at least be able to attack with them right away (Hallowed Spiritkeeper is a prime example of this). Zulaport Cutthroat is an easy include even if it's a little too obvious.

    However, I need to make sure the Drawbridge can do its thing the turn it comes down. So what's the answer? I can see three, two of which I think I already have - Mimic Vat and Swiftfoot Boots - and the third of which is less than a buck (Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler). The Vat is the one that I definitely want to include, and buying a Tyvar seems like a good idea; his -2 even gives a pseudo-Tayam effect that could probably help out if we're out of mana or something.

    I added a few other cards when I was organizing the building this weekend too, but I don't remember the exact ones. I'll update this page when I get a chance.

  • efaithfarm (05-May-2023 20:21)

    Trying to decide if Mimic Vat is a good fit here. On first glance it's a decent fit, especially if we're sacrificing things; they even end up in the graveyard, eventually. In theory you'd also be able to have them ETB with vigilance counters at least, giving you an extra source of counters to remove - but mana constraints still exist.

    The last time I played this, an opponent put KHM Vorinclex down, and...that's game for me. I can't make anything happen at all against that without drawing one of the two exile cards (Path and Wanderer's Strike), which I absolutely did not draw in that game. Obviously there are going to be cards that shut down decks - it was just a little irritating to have it happen twice in the same night. The next game JF was rendered inert and useless by a NPH Elesh Norn. These fuckin' Praetors, man. They are a menace.

  • efaithfarm (Edited 20-Apr-2023 13:34)

    Made some additions with the MOM cards I picked up - new Ozolith, Tribute, KWH, Botanical Brawler - along with something that can help with the actual "winning" part - Storm the Seedcore. Assuming you're ready to swing with a big board, you'd think you've got some counter adders or multipliers and it would add serve as a right-away Chapter III of Song. Make some already-big things bigger and give them trample and vigilance, smash and grab.

    Another card that I put in but wasn't really planning to was Invasion of Gobakhan, a Battle that taxes something from an opponent's hand before flipping into a solid countermaker (that encourages me to attack, something I probably need) that can also act like a Heroic Intervention and protect the team from a boardwipe. Best of all, Tayam can recycle it, so there's a bunch of reasons to be excited about it.

    The stuff that got taken out was mostly 4+ MV cards that I decided weren't valuable enough to justify leaving in - Mindless Automaton, Moldervine Reclamation, and Find//Finality. I also removed Cemetery Tampering, which seemed cool but self-mill isn't really what I'm shooting for here; Tayam *should* be able to get a hit almost every time she fires, even if it's just a land. To that end, I took out Stitcher's Supplier as well.

  • efaithfarm (18-Apr-2023 18:07)

    Got some nice additions for this deck in all of the MOM packs:

    Tribute to the World Tree - either draws cards or puts counters onto any creature that ETBs

    Kami of Whispered Hopes - as mentioned, HS-on-a-stick along with multicolored Marwyn-age

    Ozolith 2: The Ozolithing - More HS action, plus taps to add counters

    Probably other stuff; some Incubate cards might be useful, although stuff like Hardened Scales only works on creatures so you'd have to flip them first. There's potential either way.

    This deck needs a solid wincon - something that I tend to have struggles with in my decks (aside from Roon).

  • efaithfarm (Edited 12-Apr-2023 21:54)

    Made a couple of changes to this, mostly just looking to increase the amount of card draw. Took out a couple of meh utility cards, along with Trollbred Guardian (who is a little redundant with Gnarlid Colony and too expensive to work with Tayam), and put Fecundity and Deathreap Ritual back in. Both of those presuppose that I'm going to be sacrificing creatures on a regular basis, and that's not a big deal. There should be enough of that to make it reliable for the most part.

    Like the previous comment suggests, though, it may be less about the card drawing and more about mana issues, so there's a decent case for putting something like Wood Elves or something in to facilitate land dropping.

    The deck is just absurd once it gets going, but that's part of the issue - it is super vulnerable until it does.

    Would Marwyn be a good add? Or like Gyre Sage? Possibly/probably. I have a Marwyn, I think the Gyre Sage I have is a proxy. I'll look and see if I can find others like that in Scryfall or EDHRec. Being able to use the counters being multiplied all over the place to get more mana going would be a big boon. Jiang Yanggu does allow for some of that, as does Song of Freyalise, but it seems like mana is usually a bit of an obstacle. Time to look around.

  • efaithfarm (Edited 12-Apr-2023 18:27)

    Alright, making this happen - adding Wood Elves, because I'm unwilling to let mana problems stymie this deck. Also! I'm putting as many additional dual-basic-type lands as I can scavenge without screwing another deck in here, even if it means using a proxy or something. Just can't do the whole "welp, guess I'll keep drawing to try and find a black source" thing anymore. Wood Elves Tayams and gets any forest - including the triome, significantly.

    So Wood Elves -> in (I definitely have one, came in the KHM Elf precon),

    Temple Garden -> in (probably a proxy),

    Canopy Vista -> in (either take from JF or use the proxy)

    Scattered Groves -> in (take from JF);

    Blossoming Sands -> out,

    Selesnya Guildgate -> out,

    Terramorphic Expanse -> out,

    Grismold -> out.

  • efaithfarm (12-Apr-2023 18:25)

    If I'm going to put Katilda, Marwyn, and the Ooze in, what goes out?

    Looks like Cutthroat, Skeleton, and Bishop.

    So:

    Katilda -> in,

    Marwyn -> in,

    Predator Ooze -> in;

    Bygone Bishop -> out,

    Moss-pit Skeleton -> out,

    Zulaport Cutthroat -> out.

  • efaithfarm (12-Apr-2023 16:58)

    MOM/MOC stuff:

    Dusk Legion Duelist - 1W, 2/2 Vigilance, draw a card when it gets a +1/+1 counter (once per turn)

    Botanical Brawler - WG, 0/0 w/2 +1/+1 counters, gets another when another permanent gets one the first time each turn

    Kami of Whispered Hopes - 2G, 1/1, Hardened Scales, Tap for any color equal to power.

    New Ozolith - 1G, more Hardened Scales, 1G, T: add a +1/+1.

    Tribute to the World Tree - Enchantment, GGG, either draw or put +1/+1 counters on ETB creatures

  • efaithfarm (12-Apr-2023 14:09)

    Katilda, Dawnhart Prime - MV 2, has an activated "give everything a +1/+1", and Humans get "T: add any color." Also, I've got one.

    Gyre Sage - MV 2, Evolve, T: add G for each +1/+1 counter.

    Incubation Druid - MV 2, Adapt 3 for 5, T: add 1 from land colors, add 3 if it has a +1/+1 counter.

    Kami of Whispered Hopes (MOM) - MV 3, Hardened Scales on a stick, Marwyn for any color.

    Marwyn, the Nurturer - MV 3, gets a +1/+1 when elves ETB, T: add G equal to its power. Got one, too.

    Master Chef - MV 3, Background, CMDR enters with +1/+1 and makes CMDR a G-FU. Common Background from CLB.

    Katilda and Marwyn probably need to be in; the Kami and the Background are probably the ones that are most needed.

    EDH night last night was interesting - I played Roon twice and this inbetween, and three games is a lot for a single night. However, between a completely legit infinite turns combo (Mishra from BRC + Ugin's Nexus) and a somewhat suspect insta-kill (Doubling Season + Vraska from ONE - doesn't give us 18 poison on its own because DS doesn't double counters on anything but your own permanents, but we were toast anyway), there was plenty of time for three games and I still left at about 8:40. The Tayam game was the middle one, with the Mishra kill; couldn't get any green mana for WAY too long and never did get Tayam onto the board.

    I don't think there are big problems with the mana, but I suppose I can go back and look at it again. Maybe add in like Sakura-Tribe Elder or something? I guess Fertilid is the same idea but using counters, so that's probably better.

    I haven't played this deck in a little while, and it's interesting to look at it now and see that it's easily the most expensive collection of cards - even if that's almost entirely due to a handful of individuals (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Primal Vigor, Verdant Catacombs, The Ozolith and Indatha Triome make for about $200; we're in Budget range without them). It's a fun deck to play if it can get going, and new cards are coming out all the time that would slot right in (just needs to be a permanent, MV 3 or less, and ideally be a good home for counters of some sort). I'll have to look through stuff being released in the past few sets and see what sticks out.

    Did a quickish Scryfall and there isn't a ton, although there are more than one cards in MOM (not in Deckbox yet) that would be pretty juicy here. I added what I found to the Scratchpad.

    Played today against Paul's Rashmi deck and Rob's Zirda deck and won, even with being the major threat for the balance of the game. Tayam with Evolution Sage is a beating just by itself, and then Felidar Retreat made it even more oppressive. The highlight was when Rob hit FR with a Chaos Warp, which revealed...Cathars' Crusade. That cracked me up. I took out Rob when Song of Freyalise made my team really huge, and then I was able to recur and proliferate it twice to make it happen again the next turn against Paul.

    I took out Yannik after the game, because I had him in my hand for a huge portion of the game and never wanted to cast him. If you had a sac outlet you could probably get some good value (especially with something like Reyhan or Slurrk), but even then you're probably going to lose a bunch of vigilance counters. I could possibly revisit it later, but for now I've replaced him with a new KHM card, Fall of the Impostor. Song of Freyalise did serious work today so I'm high on Sagas, especially ones that are 3 or less in CMC.

      Eternal Witness is a major exclusion here - it would make the recursion thing work sooooo much better. My first use of Tayam put Ghave into the yard, and I realized that the only chance I had of getting it back was by drawing Golgari Findbroker - since that is the only other graveyard-recursion ability for something higher than 3 CMC.

      I'm going to look and see if there are any cards that let you get a creature back, sort of like Gravedigger or something.

        A couple of cards that might fit the bill - Cadaver Imp from JMP, Skullwinder from C20, and Omen of the Dead from THB. None of them seem like they would be terribly expensive or hard to get.
