Someone needs to get back to maintaining this list. It could be a very useful tool.

Unfortunately, it is missing some obvious inclusions, includes some bad cards, and features absolutely nothing from that last couple of years.

If this is going to be a "sticky", let's keep it up to date!

Staff of Domination has gotten unbanned, and I believe that the Do-Everything-Stick belongs on this list.

Or just unsticky it, as the list is terrible, and let someone else write another one.

Tolarian Academy and Tinker are now staples?
Skaarg Pits is listed, but Kessig Wolf Run is not?
He lists and links to Urborg, but I think he means Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Aether Vial fits in very few decks in EDH.
Darksteel Colossus sees very little play in any playgroup I've seen.
Muse Vessel... This is not a staple.
Planar Portal, maybe a staple in budget Azusa decks? I'v seen it in maybe 2 budget decks?
Sundering Titan is banned...
Civic Wayfinder but not Wood elves?
Gifts Ungiven?
Both Akroma's are just big dumb beaters, hardly staples.
Kagemaro, First to Suffer? What playgroups is this a staple in...
Woodland Guidance? Thicket Elemental? Moments Peace? Hibernation’s End? Elven Caache? None of these are staples.

This list is no more than a list of cards someone thinks are good in EDH. They are not staples, there is no data to back them up, its just a list of 'good' cards, half of which aren't great in edh and definitely not stapled, many of which are banned in EDH.

I have to agree. It's better just to start from scratch for this. I really love the idea of having a list like this to help the EDH newbs, but I feel this list is giving a bit of misdirection to them.

Would people prefer that a more general EDH sticky be created with the restricted/ban list and rules for general EDH play?

Then general EDH deck discussions would occur in the forum with EDH labels (which could be added after the fact in the event people omit them) for more directed discussion.

I like that concept. That way, people have a comprehensive resource right here on the forums.

I'll look into putting something together in the next day or two and will unsticky this one as soon as the new one is good to go.

I do like the staple list though, and would like to keep that easily accessible. Do you plan on adding a section for it to the General EDH Discussion thread?

I guess I could look into a set of staples, but really EDH decks are going to be highly dependent on the sorts of things the deck is trying to do. So to that end, is there really a core list of 25-50 staples? If anyone has a link, I'll definitely look it over.

I'll dig around, but I'm thinking it might make more sense to have an intro sticky with a few pointers here or there. I can add a set of staples after that, but I think most of those will come up in more specific deck discussions.

I think you're right; I was using it as a starting point to identify EDH techniques, but that would be much better spelled out in a general EDH informational post.

In all honesty I can only think of 3 things that fit in almost every EDH deck that would be staples. There are plenty of useful cards, but those are strongly dependent on the deck's goal. I'm sure there are a handful more but cards that actually fit in almost any deck are quite rare in this open of a format.

Just going to throw this out there, Gifts Ungiven and Tinker have been banned from EDH longer than most of the posts on this page.

You'll note that this one was removed from the forum stickies a little while back as really, there aren't "staples" so much as just cards that people might like to think about for EDH. I've written the new sticky that's at the top of the forum and we ask people to have more specific EDH deck discussions over just expecting part of the deck to be built for them with "staples."

Ah. It's been a while since I've used a forum. I forgot about stickies and didn't think about whether this thread was one or not. Thanks for mentioning. It looked like that's where the discussion had gone. I was just trying to make sure that if the list was still updated that those cards were removed so new edh players didn't go out to buy cards they couldn't use.
