unless you really like to trade buying boxes is a waste of your money if you buy what you want outright you get what you want/need. You can put together a decent deck for eighty dollars and when you want to build a new deck you can trade cards from that one for new ones and buy the rest.

When I got back in around 6 months ago I had some older cards to trade for standard rares and I just buy playsets of the common and uncommons that come out I think in the long run it is cheaper to buy or trade for what you need but nothing beats the thrill of pullling a $40 card.

Heres what I see about buying a box.  You might luck out pulling three high dollar cards to make the box worth it and get the bonus of all the little stuff sitting on shelves in boxes so your girlfriend or wife can complain you have to many cards sitting around or you can use that money to try and get lucky on a really high dollar card on ebay or just buy what you want and then when you want to build a new deck trade the high dollar cards for the high dollar cards of the new deck and buy all the little crap. You can also do what I do I find the cheapest vendor that sells playsets of common and uncommons from the newer sets and then buy or trade for what I need to make a deck. They usually sell for under $30 with shipping. I found the last set for $24 shipping included on ebay so I have all the little pieces from scars to DA so I just trade whatever rares i get at FNM and give most of the rest of the pack to kids starting out.

Oh and she still says I have to many cards laying around

If you go on tcgplayer someone wrote a good article about the top teir decks and posted deck lists of the more common varieties. They also have deck lists from top 8's of ptq's and mtgo.
