Finding trades on deckbox kinda sucks so I wrote a tool to help speed up the process.

Lets say you want to trade for a Black Lotus. This is an unlikely example, but go with it. You usually wind up on this page:

http://deckbox.org/mtg/Black%20Lotus

Holy shit! Two(!) pages of users to click through? What a pain. And you don't even want to trade with anyone outside the United States. Enter DBDC. (I don't even remember what that stands for...)

DBDC gets a card name from you and then sorts through every page of users that has that card on their tradelist. It weeds out non-Americans and hits you with a nice table telling you the user's name, location, and how many of that card they got. Awesome.

So, lets see who will trade us a Black Lotus. Lets try Error121. Just click the Link cell associated with his name and copy-paste that sonofabitch into your browser.

Hmm, looks terrible. He hasn't been online since November, has 0% feedback, and probably doesn't shower. Lets blacklist him. Just open up the associated blacklist.txt and put his username in using your favorite text editor. Boom! You'll never pull his profile again.

Send me a note if you want this thing. I still haven't packaged it up nice yet but I should be ready to deliver it next week. Here's some boring notes on the thing:

I wrote it in 5 hours. It doesn't do any error handling so you need to enter card names in perfectly. If you want to search "Fog" you need to enter "Fog". Not "fog", not " Fog", not "fog ", not "FOG" ...

You need Java to run it. Ain't nobody got time to teach you how to install Java so just Google it.

It won't work if you run behind a proxy.

It uses JSoup to sort through deckbox.

It sorts through deckbox very quickly. Don't go crazy with it. Deckbox probably doesn't want to serve 100 pages per second to you and they have every right to block you for using this thing too quickly.

I realize that automatically sorting out non-Americans isn't helpful to most but hey, that's all I've got for now. I tried to query in to each user's profile to sort out local traders, dead accounts, etc. but it was too complicated for a morning project so this it what it do for now.

Leave me some feedback. I could probably make this a heck of a lot more user-friendly over the weekend and any comments you have will help. Thanks!

Oh, the combo box is for changing the sort from "people who have card X" to "people who want card X". The latter isn't implemented yet so both just find users who have card X.

I showed up at Boldo's and was told there were no more spots open unless I wanted to buy this one guys' spot for $90. I looked in the back for the rest of you but didn't see you so I went home and went 0-1 in a round of Life, the board game, for which I was awarded zero prize packs.

I think I can manage to walk over to Boldo's. Azorius!

Okay, Booze Cube this Friday at 7:00 at my place. It only supports 8 players, and since I can't create events for the group, I'll track attendance here. Please bring your friends and non-deckbox-ers. Just let me know on this thread if they're coming. I'll PM you my address and phone number. Check out http://theboozecube.blogspot.com/2012/0 … rules.html for the rules. You'll need a beverage to sip on. I can provide things to take shots of and things to chug, should it come to that. You don't need to consume alcohol to play but it is encouraged. Non-drinkers with cards like

will easily win where the rest of us might give up on drawing cards late in the game. That said, be responsible. If you need a ride home or need to crash on the couch, that's perfectly okay.

I'll have a completed Booze and Pauper Cube by this Friday. Both can support 8 player drafts. Since there is no event next week, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting together to try these out. I would prefer to do Booze Cube on a Friday since it kills my mornings, and Pauper Cube on Monday perhaps.

I've decided to call the project "playmat." Let me know if you have a better idea for a name. Here's how it works: You'll create an account separate from your deckbox account and will then be able to join/create game. The account is so statistics, preferences, history, etc. can be associated with each person. Like W/L record for each deck you play with. I think the first release will be pretty useless. It will essentially be a virtual table. All it will know is the location of cards: What's in your hand, what's in your graveyard, what's in your library, what's on the table and so on. When you use this thing, you'll have to know how to play the game. You choose when to draw a card, when to discard, how conflict works, etc. This isn't a video game. You can cheat like crazy. Want to draw your entire library? No problem. Want to cast your entire graveyard for no mana? OK, you can do that. You have to track your life total, where your cards should be on the battlefield, and what your opponent is doing. A small chat window will let you talk with your opponent, and will report each public action you take, so if you do cheat, he/she can send some swear words your way.

So what's the benefit? Not dealing with physical cards at all. Your deckbox decks are all public information. For example, my 1-UP deck is public to the world as Set # 271790. Anyone, anywhere can go to deckbox.org/sets/271790 and see it. If you want to play with 1-UP, just copy and paste "271790" into Playmat and it will load all the cards for your use. Want to play with a random deck you found on deckbox that doesn't belong to you? No problem. Want to play a burn deck with 20 Black Lotus cards for mana? Create it on deckbox and playmat will let you do that instantly. Playmat shuffles, puts the cards on the table and lets you have at it.

Once this base application is in place, it can become something bigger and better and I'd like to hear your ideas on what that could be.

Anyone interested in cube drafting some time? I have nearly completed Adam Styborski's Pauper Cube (http://thepaupercube.wordpress.com/) and last night a few of us assembled The Booze Cube (theboozecube.blogspot.com). Booze cube should not be played on Monday nights.

You're probably thinking of Cockatrice.  Yes, it works, but it is clunky mostly because it doesn't know the rules of the game (Mostly for copyright reasons).

Yes, Cockatrice was the one I was thinking about. I'm nervous about the copyright laws so I probably won't let this project get too big; I'll just have a server running that could host enough games to keep the Rochester group playing. I don't care to gain too much attention, nor do I care to pay for the hardware needed to let the world use such an application. I just want to pad my resume and make something cool while I'm at it.

That said, the way I have this thing designed, I don't think I violate any laws or terms of use.

Would you rather play magic on your PC or your phone? I'm more motivated to do the PC since I don't have a smartphone but I have created more apps than websites.

I have (slowly) been working on creating a web application that would allow you to play magic in your web browser. The application links to your deckbox account and pulls your decks (whether they are real or not) to let you play 1-on-1, X-headed giant, EDH, etc.

When I heard there was already such a program out there, I kinda quit the project. Have any of you ever used it? I'm not even sure what it's called but I see screenshots from it on Reddit all the time. Does it work well? Is there anything you wish that website did that it doesn't do? Does it work on your smartphone? I need a programming project to get some website development work experience and this idea has always been with me but I don't want to proceed if something already exists.
