Topic: Rookie Debut . . . Thoughts on my first deck.

I would just like some advice on my first attempt at creating a deck. I'm new to MTG, I was introduced to it by my cousins and would like to be some what competitive, have fun and learn. All the cards I have are in my inventory. So any input that you have would be greatly appreciated.

The theme that I wanted for my first deck was Black/White, life, death & rebirth.

Thank you advance for any input given.

You look like you are going for an aggro control deck here. One thing to note is that life gain in general isn't a great strategy. It can be really helpful against certain decks, but in general it doesn't affect the board and isn't effective enough to be worth the resources spent. You'll want to lose a bunch of those cards for sure. I would remove Life's Finale as well, you have a lot of creatures so you want to focus more on spot removal for problems your opponent has and hand disruption for getting rid of problems before they even occur. Some of your creatures are sort of lacking compared to your other options as well. My attempt to keep with the basic theme of the deck, but upgrade some pieces based on your inventory:

-1 Rusted Sentinel
-2 Gravedigger
+2 Blade Splicer
+2 Porcelain Legionnaire
+1 Sengir Vampire

-1 Angel's Mercy
-2 War Report
-1 Taste of Blood
-1 Caress of Phyrexia
-1 Phyrexian Unlife
-2 Elixir of Immortality
-1 Life's Finale
-1 Corrupt
-1 Sorin's Thirst
+2 Despise
+1 Duress
+2 Oblivion Ring
+2 Doom Blade
+1 Grasp of Darkness
+1 Journey to Nowhere

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this out for me.

I would also recommend removing all 3 Inquisitor Exarchs and adding in Viscera Seer, Devouring Swarm and a Skinrender.  I don't think your mana base supports playing the Exarch very well with only 5 plains.  I am not saying you can't play it ever, I just doubt you see 2 plains often enough and early enough for their effect to be better than the other 3 cards I mentioned.

Skinrender is just a good card.
Devouring Swarm and Viscera Seer both combo with Reassembling skeleton to either help you find cards you want or to deal good damage.

Lastly, I wouldn't be too afraid to run Life's Finale, no offense to turbohappy.  I think your deck would recover from it better than others with the reassembling skeletons and gravediggers.  I just wouldn't put more than 1 or 2 in the deck.

Welcome to the game; I hope you have fun!
