Topic: Post Rotation Izzet Control

Yeah I'm opening a thread for two different Type 2 decks tongue I want to see opinions on both, because I see either one being viable.

The idea is simple enough. Control until you win. Guttersnipe is a fair win-con, although I think Spellheart Chimera will be strong. With Snapcaster and Reanimator type decks rotating, graveyard hate should be less present than usual. I also wondered about Young Pyromancer/Purphoros as a win con, although YP is obviously easily susceptible to removal and no help with combat presence. I also want to consider the UB Scryland to make Far//Away an optional

Other cards I think will make it in are Omenspeaker (a better Augor of Bolas? Debatable), Voyages End, and Swan Song will easily see side board. Maybe Curse of the Swine with Ratchet Bomb synergy??

Re: Post Rotation Izzet Control

A UR deck needs to be a tempo/control deck post rotation, imo.  You'll have access to some decent enough cards.  Anger of the gods, mizzium mortars, oppurtunity, Ætherling.  Steam augury is pretty good too.

This deck needs to be playing cards like Jace, AOT, the new pro white dragon, and the Spell heart chimera synergies pretty well with things like wild guess and steam augury.  Swan song probably has a place here too.  A cheap and easy way to protect the chimera.

I don't like guttersnipe, I never have.  His damage is supplemental at best.  You'll get to use him a couple times at most and all he does is put some damage on the board and stall, and usually he's just a target for removal.  People try to make him work and I've never seen it do anything.  I could be wrong about him after rotation, but IDK. There's other things I'd try before him.

But... we'll see how it goes.

Re: Post Rotation Izzet Control

I forgot Aetherling >_<

I've been back and forth on Steam Augury. I suppose if I run the Chimeras then I should commit to running them. Storm breath Dragon seems huge. Maybe not quite Thundermaw Hellkite, but the fact it can get bigger through Monstrosity is pretty sweet.

So Guttersnipe is eh, what about Young Pyromancer? Is my opinion on that fairly accurate? Also, what about Nivmagus Elemental, simply because it's fast? And in control mirrors a fast win-con?

Re: Post Rotation Izzet Control

Nivmagus was garbage, and probably still is, I wouldn't attempt to play it.

There could be a deck with pyromancer and the red god, molten birth?  IDK,  seems to be there.  Though I feel it would be mono red the token stuff for blue seems to require a lot of devotion/mana.

In a control mirror it becomes who plays their counter spells better and who gets off their draw card utility. A resolved Ætherling in a control match is pretty deadly.

Re: Post Rotation Izzet Control

I'm thinking the red god will fit some kind of RBW Tokens in modern more than a RU Pyromancer Standard. Still, my inner Johnny sees all the combos
