Topic: Vampire decks in new Standard?

Hey guys,

After playing through my Duel of the Planeswalker on the Xbox 360 and getting my ass kicked repeatedly by Sorin Markov, I decided to build a mono-black Vampire deck. However, I would like some help working it out so it'd be a decent deck for competitive play.

This is what I got so far:

For those of you too lazy to click the link, here's the deck list:

-----

Deck: The Sanguine Twilight

Creatures (21):
4 Bloodghast
3 Kalastria Highborn
4 Vampire Hexmage
3 Captivating Vampire
4 Vampire Nighthawk
3 Malakir Bloodwitch

Instants (7):
4 Disfigure
3 Urge to Feed

Sorcery (8):
3 Feast of Blood
2 Grim Discovery
3 Sign in Blood

Planeswalker (2):
2 Sorin Markov

Land (22):
18 Swamp
4 Terramorphic Expanse

Sideboard (15):
4 Deathmark
3 Marsh Casualties
4 Mind Rot
4 Mind Sludge

-----

I'm thinking of going -2 Swamp +1 Feast of Blood +1 Malakir Bloodwitch, not entirely sure though.

And I'm not entirely sure on Captivating Vampire either or if I should get Anowon, the Ruin Sage, Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet or Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief. Primarily the deck was about outlasting the opponent with lifelink (Child of Night for example). However, after looking at competitive decks, it's been changed around a bit as you could probably tell.

At any rate, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not quite sure what the meta-game is like nowadays, nor how it will be for 2011 Standard.

Edit: -2 Swamp, +2 Sorin Markov

Re: Vampire decks in new Standard?

Hi, I really really recommend Vampire Nocturnus,Gatekeeper of Malakir and maybe Blade of the Bloodchief

But try to check out these two decks:

And I'm sure the owners of these decks will be happy to help you out.

Re: Vampire decks in new Standard?

Hi Spoook,

Thanks for the tips on the cards, and I'll definitely check out the decks. The only problem with Vampire Nocturnus is that he will not be standard legal once the rotation for the 2011 Core Set goes through. Otherwise I'd definitely be using him.

Again, thanks for the reply!

Any time, and true, but until then (more than 2 months you can still use it if you have access to it)

Well, as the thread title says, the OP is looking to get his deck ready for the new standard tongue

Re: Vampire decks in new Standard?

Kargha, you should wait for scars, apparently it will have vampires (zombies too it seems).

Re: Vampire decks in new Standard?

As Trikster said: wait for scars. It could possibly have another vampire that generates token for Captivating Vampire. I've seen some speculation around the inter-webs regarding this possibilty. Also, remember when Nocturnus first came out and everybody was like: "ok..so how does this help me?". Perhaps the same is happening to CV. Just an idea...

Re: Vampire decks in new Standard?

This is the BR Vampires deck I ran at a few FNMs. It got me a top 4 and a 5th place (It's a smaller shop, so they don't cut to top 8 often, just top 4).

One thing I felt is that you NEED to go into a second color in order to handle faster decks and also for the Pro-Black stuff in white. Lightning Bolt is a great out for a lot of the stuff out there, and it also gives you access to Sarkhan the Mad which has amazing synergy with Bloodghast. Also, it gives us the option of Earthquake for those decks that swarm you heavily on the ground (Mostly green and red). It's also good on Fauna Shaman decks as most of their creatures are on the ground as well. Lastly, it gives us Terminate which is strictly better than Doom Blade, mostly because of the mirror match.

One change that never made it to the deck is the inclusion of Bojuka Bog, which will heavily damage the Fauna Shaman and any other Vengevine deck.

Changes to make the deck a bit cheaper would mainly be dropping the Arid Mesas and Verdant Catacombs for the Terramporphic Expanses/Evolving Wilds, since it will fetch for either. The downside is that it comes into play tapped, which will slow you down and hurt you. This deck plays a bit more control than aggro, but you still want to try wrecking face with Goblin Guides.

For in the final hour, all shall serve the one...true...King.
