Topic: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

What are good deckspawn websites for pauper builds? I'm just looking for ideas.

Has anybody seen a functional pauper mill?

What are the coolest pauper decks you've seen, casual or otherwise? Cool, by means of fun to play. I have a version of Eye Candy/ Wee Fiend/ Wee Xerox, whatever you want to call it, that I think is really fun to play.

Self mill for Pauper. I see the ways to mill yourself out, but without Splinterfright and Boneyard Wurm, or even Mindshrieker, how do I convert a full graveyard into a win-con?

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

http://deckbox.org/sets/464552 is my Izzet Pauper build for reference.

I've also been trolling http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper/full for builds, but they tend to be the same day after day because the competitive format tends to hive mind and stagnate pretty quickly.

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Does anybody play Pauper? Casual, mtgo or competitive paper?

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Hey!

Some of my friends and I are beginning to get into the wonderful world of Pauper, but we are all school mates who play this causally. I prefer to play with the idea of "What do I have in disposal?" So my pauper deck is pretty standard one.

I haven't yet seen anybody make a functional pauper mill deck, but again, we just began playing it. smile

A good pauper resource is http://pdcmagic.com/

^That is exactly what I was looking for!

Also searching pauper brew in Google returns some interesting stuff. Most of the decks are half fleshed out.

Along the lines of pauper mill, a buddy of mine came up with an affinity offshoot, using salvage slasher as a way to capitalize on the full graveyard.

I came up with this brew today. Seems decent, right?

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

http://deckbox.org/sets/507862 Here is my new one, a Mono-red aggro deck. smile

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

That's something I think is weird. Red Deck Wins is a contender in almost every other format, and is mostly cheap cards, yet no red deck wins in pauper competitiely. o.O What's up with that?

I definitely want to try one now though, maybe with some akroan crusader? I've seen that card in action, and it's ridiculously strong for a one drop. Especially when the guy plays titan's strength on it turn two. ::Shudder::

I would believe it is because that most good and working red Aggro cards aren't common. They need to do more then just hit hard, they need a way to come back and do more then that. smile

Even through I like Heroic, I am sceptical of it being a deck basing keyword.  smile

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Here is another creation of mine! big_smile Le http://deckbox.org/sets/519329(Bant Exalted)

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Agreed. Heroic is too demanding to be the main idea of a deck, but it feels like a really good support mechanic. big_smile

Man I love this thread.

True, if you are going for a red token Aggro deck with Thatcher's Revolt, you could use Akroan to boost the number of Tokens. Plus put a Foundery street denizen in there and swing, it can only feel good. tongue

Yea, I love it as well! smile

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

So I have this idea rolling around in my head.

Essence Harvest in a Kiln Fiend shell... But I would need access to blue for draw to power up the Fiend.
Spellheart Chimera, Electrickery, Mizzium Skin, Stone Rain, Black Cat, Cry of Contrition, Gitaxian Probe, Distress, Funeral Charm...

Could it even work? My mana base in pauper is terrible for a tri color load. Basics, Gates, Bounces and Panoramas... And if I'm in blue red anyway, why not just Fling?

Beside that Spellheart Chimera is uncommon, it may be good enough. Well, you shouldn't be afraid to use gates as they are one of your only tools to slash mana. tongue If I were you, you should look into as many 1 drop instants and sorcery's as possible.

Remember that fling doesn't trigger Kiln Fiends ability, as it dies before Fling triggers it.

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

I've actually got a few pauper decks I run.

There's UR Storm: http://deckbox.org/sets/525400
Similar to yours. This plays pretty consistently, although it's kind of a glass cannon. I strongly recommend Manamorphose in this deck; a free spell that pumps Cyclops + a cantrip is incredible.

There's BW Exalted: http://deckbox.org/sets/525401
First pauper deck I built. This one's fun to play. It's a really resilient deck, and it can play both the aggressive & control role. To me, it's a solid deck that can do multiple things at once. It has ways to stabilize & regain health, ways to control, and ways to be really aggressive.

And finally, UG Tron: http://deckbox.org/sets/525406
Somehow, it kind of works. Early game, it stumbles a little bit. But usually, by the time Tron is online, the opponent can't do a whole lot, aside from trying land destruction. Nessian Asp is such a great card for pauper, especially with Tron lands. It's easy enough to cast it before turn 5, but the Tron lands & Wildheart Invoker make it ridiculous. Fireball is a fun alternate win con.

I also have a pauper cube. I'll post a list eventually...

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

I currently run an Izzet Wee Fiend so I'm familiar with the low cost drawing type spells that storm and similar strategies use. I can't think of a better way to abuse the strength I see in essence harvest though.

Terrible oversight on spellheart chimera. Doh.

Edit: I see and love essence harvest in your exalted deck. smile

Manamorphose could actually work with Essence Harvest. Prophetic Prism could work as well. The only problem with it in UR, though, is that it's basically a win-more card. The only time it'll actually be relevant is when you've likely already hit your opponent for some obscene amount of unblockable damage or something like that. In all other instances, it's basically a dead card. It's got a similar problem in my exalted deck, although I have it just as a finisher. That deck isn't nearly as explosive as the typical UR build, and it's just a way to get the last few points of damage in & end a game. That, and splashing a third color would mess up the mana base too much.

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Bump, and yeah you're totally right about it being a win more. In a green deck, it might have more punch. Or in a totally non pauper format. Or maybe it's not that great a card? More of a tasty morsel for newbies...

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Gray Merchant of Asphodel

Strategies for it, against it? It's such an awesome card, but I hate seeing it across the table. smile

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Dissipate would be great, but not pauper. Journey to Nowhere is OK, but if they're running any kind of enchantment removal, all it does is trigger him again. Tragic Slip is always great, though. The only real difficulty in dealing with him is if the opponent is running graveyard recursion, as that's typically how the "standard" MBD deck works.

I've been looking for ways to build around him as well, though. Will probably figure something out this weekend.

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

I know, I'm bumping a two week old thread, but it's the only pauper discussion on here...

I recently built a pauper deck, and I'm wondering if it has potential to be effective at all...
I've literally never played a game of pauper before, so i'm not sure what other people are playing, or if this deck exists in some other fashion, but I came up with a pauper Caw-blade deck. [http://deckbox.org/sets/564951]

It is in essence a tempo deck that suits up Squadron hawk and uses it along with phantasmal bear to do consistent damage.

As for facing Gary, In standard the plan is to keep them at a very low devotion count. There's plenty of stuff in the esper colors to remove devotion, even at common rarity. Bounce spells like Unsummon would also work pretty well to knock their count down. I'd assume that Gary plays similarly in pauper as he does in standard, though I can't think of too many non-creature devotion options that pauper has access to, so the creature removal should be enough to get it done. Of course, I could also be totally wrong here, but that's just what I see with him.

Re: [Pauper][Discussion] Deck ideas? Resources?

Thank you for bumping!! Take the following with a grain of salt. I am a casual player, but I play a lot of paper pauper against my buddies, and we netdeck about half the time, so our pauper meta is pretty competitive.

skyblinder staff is pretty cool, but expensive and not as strong with delver of secrets, a strong component of your mirror, across the table

White weenies usually uses bonesplitter in a similar capacity and the equip is friendlier.

A good place to get "current pauper metagame" is http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper. It's the online meta, and online is a bit different than being able to bluff out a live opponent so the card choices are a bit different.

One other comment I have is your use of evolving wilds and it's ilk. That really slows down your deck. I know that theoretically it thins it and that's all well and good in a more traditional format, but pauper is fast. Like turn 4 fast, and almost every deck is some aggro variant. Fetch lands are strictly worse than a basic land in this format, unless you need 3-4 colors, and that's, more often than not, suicide. Guildgates are even a risk, in my opinion. That being said, there are some grindy decks in pauper, and you're suited to shut down the fast decks like Green Stompy, and Wee Fiend, because of your creature removal.

Initial playtests are strong even though it's an old list. Thoughts?
