Topic: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

Loved Prophetic Flamespeaker and decided to make a deck around him.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/gruul-quad-damage/

This deck attacks from many angles, and typically will wait for the right opportunity to 20-0 someone in one go.
Depending on the match up.

Taking it to game day, so far the largest hit dealt was a 3/3 reckoner equipped Dangerous from Armed // Dangerous.
10 power on board for opponent, dictate of twin gods in play. 10 to reckoner, translating to 20 from dictate. 20 redirected to his face, translating to 40 with dictate yet again.

Let me know what you think! I may sideboard in some Cacklers or Firedrinker Satyrs for the control match ups to reduce my curve and add some early aggression.

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

My store has a significant mix of skill and playstyle, not a ton of attendance.

Last game day I won with a full on perfect Jund Monsters with current metagame sideboard / structure.. etc.
First match was a izzet control brew, 2-0
second match was Mono Black (T1 competitive player), 2-0
final match was against a friend, and previous Pro Tour qualifier playing UW Control. 2-1

I do not expect the same performance or decks, however there is a very possible chance I may face my friend again and him using the same deck in round 3.
I do expect two rounds of brews / T2 aggro or devo decks, which I will have zero difficulty with, this deck seems to steamroll anything aggro with tricks.
I would like to keep this deck concept while catering the sideboard a bit more to give me an edge against UW/x control.

Currently testing against golgari devotion & UW control.

Twinflame is good fun with Fanatic of Mogis... I'd also consider splashing white in your mana base just for the ability to add Boros Charm to the sideboard for control match-ups.

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

Thank you for your reply..
I do have two twinflames lying around... would be even better striving various other cards on board.

Not sure if that would be good main, and I dont know what I would side it in against.

I like the splash white for boros charm indestructibility. Unfortunately I just dumped all of my sacred foundries and temple of triumphs to progress my modern fetch base!
wanted to keep my standard play simple while everything was volatile in pricing approaching M15 & rotation.

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

I've only played against one deck with the Flamespeaker so far and as soon and he resolved I killed it.  I suggest a plan to protect him from Doom Blade, Hero's Downfall, Banishing Light, etc., or accept that he's a lightning rod and use that to your advantage.

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

Right.
The first thing that came to mind was ranger's guile, 3 on sideboard to throw in there against any removal heavy decks.
8 creatures that pose problems to control.

I dont expect him to win every game, I do expect him to be killed and when they dont kill him... I expect him to do work.
I have dealt lethal damage with any of the creatures in the deck.. granting +1/+1 & double strike via armed // dangerous can provide some dirty damage, especially with any pumps and/or dictate of the twin gods.

any other protection recommendations?

I tend to have difficulty with UW control heavy in Celestial Flare & Azorius Charms...

*edit* was also considering adding destructive revelry to blow up banishing light / detention spheres

The idea behind Twinflame (and I wouldn't advise running more than 2) is that you build up a red-devotion heavy board, THEN drop Dictate during their end phase, and then the next turn, Fanatic and Twinflame the Fanatic... you don't even have to swing...

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

For that to work, I would need 5 mana for dictate on their turn.
provided I have or draw a sixth next turn.

I would need 5 devotion to get the job done.
reckoner +4 others = 5 damage. doubled by dictate.
Twinflame it for another 10.

Couple burning trees for some early nykthos shenanigans and you could see this much damage sooner.

Re: (Standard) Gruul Quad Damage, Looking for input for Gameday!

Cant seem to figure out what to drop for twinflame, or if I should at all.

I want to ditch madcap skills because its an on the table card, no tricks, open 2 for 1.
Meanwhile a spell in my hand is much more surprising and could provide more damage.

also switched my sideboard around, added 2 hammer of purphoros.
