Topic: Rule questioning:Gods and combat instants

Hello guys,

This is my first post, so if I forget anything, please let me know and I'll adjust it.

So, as you all should know, Gods in the Theros block require devotion in order to become creatures.
I faced a situation the other day where my opponent had the required devotion for his God (Kruphix, God of Horizons), and I played Spinal Embrace.
Combat phase engages
My reasoning was since it's a creature right now, I can target it.
Where I was questioned is once it is under my control, it is not a creature anymore.
Does the gain control effect ends, or does it remain active until the end of my turn, where it is sacrificed even if it isn't a creature anymore?

I hope I was clear enough.

Questions/thoughts, Go!

Re: Rule questioning:Gods and combat instants

Short Answer: it works as you would hope, you do  keep it until EOT and then sacrifice it.

Explanation: The spell checks if it is a creature (aka a legal target) twice. Once upon casting of the spell and once upon resolution. At both of those times it is under your opponent's control, so as long as he has sufficient devotion the spell will work

In general, I am blunt and to the point. I apologize in advance if I appear mean or rude.

Thanks!

Re: Rule questioning:Gods and combat instants

To further clarify though, the spell would resolve and you would take control of Kruphix; however, I believe that, once under your control, Kruphix would check your devotion, see that you do not have enough and would cease being a creature while under your control.  However, the fact it is no longer a creature wouldn't stop you from sacrificing the permanent... but there is no toughness associated with it.

So again, I could be wrong here, but my sense is that the spell would take Kruphix, he stops being a creature and cannot block, you still sac him, but you don't gain any life.

True. I would have mentioned that had I noticed the bit about lifegain. Good catch.
