I recently just got back into collecting MtG cards again and am slowly updating my inventory.  All of my cards that I have personally opened have gone straight from pack, to loader, to inside a binder so they have barely even seen the light of day under no protection. But I am changing them from M to NM just as a precaution because if I want to hold my possible traders to a standard, I should hold myself to that same standard.
To me, card condition is extremely important.  A lot of the stuff I mark NM is actually M.  I just don't have the space to put them in a binder and I never want to say something is one thing, when it is actually something else.
