Where can I go to play Modern? How about Legacy? Commander or Vintage?
It can be hard to find stores that host events in your area, especially more obscure events. Maybe you'd even be willing to go a little out of your way every few weeks if it meant you got the chance to break out the rarely played Vintage deck. You can check the store listings on the WOTC site, but sadly stores don't keep this resource updated with accurate information, and they suffer for it. Many don't have information on their website either, if they even have a website. The best way to find out what's going on at a store is to pick up the phone and call them, ask them what events they host and when.
To help get you started though, below is a compiled list of local shops that hold Magic the Gathering events. This list does not include places that only sell Magic singles and/or boosters, while that's nice to know it's better to support places where we can actually sit down and play. If you're favorite local store isn't listed, or you are a store and want to be listed, please post a reply with the relevant information and it'll get added to the board.
Events are color tagged, all limited events such as Draft, Standard, Block Constructed (Current Block) and Extended will be Red. Eternal formats such as Vintage, Legacy and Modern will be Blue for Vintage & Legacy and Teal for Modern & Block Party. Multiplayer formats like Commander/EDH, and Two headed dragon will be Orange. Casual play, where people can play whatever decks they want to bring are tagged Green and Yu-Gi-Oh is Purple (Some of us do play a little Yu-Gi-Oh on the side so it's nice to know where we can play both). Stores may change what events they hold without notice, and the information here may be out of date, it is meant to be used as a guide to help one figure out what is available and where in Southern California.
If multiple events are listed for the same day at a store, and they have -and- written between them that means both events take place at the same time on that day. If events have an -or- written between them, that means those events are held on alternating days, such as Standard one week and Draft the other. If an event has an Asterisk * next to it, that's an indication that the event is not held regularly and that whether it takes place is likely dependent on how many people show up or some other criteria. Always remember to call ahead to a store you haven't visited before to confirm that the information listed here is accurate for the day in question you wish to visit...
