[Edit] Sorry, forgot I should use the Support & Feedback. I submitted this through that as well.

I don't have any answers/suggestion on how to make money to support Deckbox. In this day and age, people get so much for free (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc...) it's gotta be like pulling teeth to get money from folks.

Personally, I would easily pay $20/30 a year for use of the Premium site. It's really tough to justify $70 though. Man I wish I could tell you that 4/5 people would pay $20 and that 1/5 would pay $70. wink

Ok, I do have one suggestion. Kickstarter (or one of those type things) for the mobile app. If you get the money, great. Make it. If not, forget about it. Let someone else do it. I'd prefer just a mobile-friendly version of the site over a special app anyways. smile

So whats your point?
Wikipedia has as well a higher amount of staff and cost for their servers, hell even electricity will cost them a shitload.
I am not saying donations WILL work. I am saying they COULD work.

Wasn't making a point necessarily, just an observation.

But if you'd like me to make a point it would be that Wikipedia is probably a poor comparison as scale should be a factor when suggesting a revenue model. If Deckbox got 10% of its users to go Premium (at $7 per month), they'd bring in $650k per year. If Wikipedia did the same, they'd bring in $3.36 billion (assuming 400 million users). Completely guessing here, but $650k would probably do a good job of covering most of Deckbox's yearly operating costs while $3.36 billion would cover Wikipedia's operating costs plus allow them to maybe cure cancer or something.

Additionally, Wikipedia provides a very different service than Deckbox (the same can be said of the Star City Games subscription which was listed for comparison elsewhere).

That's not to say, however, that donations couldn't be helpful or work for Deckbox. Unfortunately, I recall many people suggesting/offering to donate to Deckbox prior to the addition of the Marketplace feature when there were discussions about how this site could sustain itself and , to the best of my knowledge, every offer was declined.

One of the most used sites does use donations.
Its wikipedia.

http://deckbox.org/users
Found 77647 results.

"The site serves between 400 and 500 million unique users per month and has 18 million articles between all supported languages. As of December, the site had some 80,000 "active editors" -- those who make five or more edits a month."

Wikipedia has a slightly larger user base.

Looking for 1 Brimaz and 1 Bloodstained Mire (KTK, unless you want to give me a good deal on an ONS one).

I apologize if this has already been suggested.

A useful feature to have would be the ability to see a list of your trade history with a specific user. Having a list of links to previous completed and cancelled trades between you and Trader_X would be great. Perhaps it could show up on the user's profile page as a simple list of links. Otherwise a dedicated page maybe that could be linked to in the side column (Email, New trade with Trader_X, View Trades, *Trade History*, etc...)

Also, a big thanks for all the work you've been doing.

Cheers

The ideal trade would be 1 Cryptic, 3 Snapcasters and 2 Spellskites. The Cryptic and probably 2 Snapcasters are most important.

Looking for 1x Cryptic Command (any edition) and 1x Snapcaster Mage.

Notable haves:
Tarmogoyf
Misty Rainforest
Linvala, Keeper of Silence
Sliver Queen
Marsh Flats
Survival of the Fittest
Stifle
Volrath's Stronghold
Ensnaring Bridge
Arcbound Ravager
Goblin Piledriver
Ancient Tomb
Vengevine
Demonic Tutor

It would be nice to have the card information back on card pages (oracle text, etc...). Helps a lot with older cards who's text have changed and/or are really hard to read from the image.
example: http://deckbox.org/mtg/Tawnos%27s%20Cof … collection
I'm assuming the card info was removed so the page could work as the new card pop-up, but maybe the pop-up and the full page could just be different. The tabs and drop-down boxes are good for the pop-up, but I think the full page would be better just having all the info displayed (no tabs, no drop-downs).

Having the permanent card search box on the card page would be nice too. The Ctrk-I feature seems great on pages that normally don't have search, but adds a keystroke in this case. It's also pretty tough to Ctrl-I on mobile. Drop downs, tabs, pop-ups, etc are all pretty difficult on a mobile phone. So having all the info just laid out straight on the full card page would help that as well.

Bump and grind.

Looking to trade for Revised duals, Wasteland(s), Force of Will(s) and possibly Damnation, Cryptic Command or Vampiric Tutor.

Thanks for looking!

Notable haves:
4x Scalding Tarn
3x Misty Rainforest
4x Marsh Flats
4x Verdant Catacombs
4x Arid Mesa
4x Vengevine

Tarmogoyf (MM)
City of Brass (Arabian Nights)
Stifle
Survival of the Fittest
Intuition

(foil) Spell Pierce
(foil) Mirari's Wake (Judgement)
(foil) Eye of Ugin
(foil) Phyrexian Revoker
(foil) Pyromancer Ascension
(foil) Spirit of the Labyrinth

An easy way to do that is to start a Local trade with that friend and put the cards you're loaning them in the trade. As long as neither of you finish/accept the trade, you have your list and your inventory does not change.

Yes, that is what the developers are saying. They have stated that they looked into everything and the Marketplace was the only way to sustain the site. But it's hard to just accept that with the limited knowledge we as users have of their business. Per the Deckbox Trade Index:

"15036 users playing Magic the Gathering have logged in the last 2 months."

If Deckbox was a subscription based service and even 1/3 of those users actually paid for the service at $2 a month, that's $10k.

That looks pretty sustainable and decent for a part time business, but there are plenty of factors involved I know nothing about so my view is limited. I, by no means, fault them for wanting to make the website sustainable financially and make a profit off of their work. They definitely deserve it. Personally, I would just much rather pay a few dollars a month for the trading service than have the Marketplace.

The API problem came about because Deckbox thought, for some reason, that if they started competing against TCG Player that TCG Player would continue to allow them to use their pricing data.

If my understanding is correct, the Deckbox team never expected TCG to ignore them if they started competing with them. They simply thought they'd have a little time to use the TCG API to get they're own pricing data going.

First off, thanks so much for this site. Without it I would never have started trading and would just have a bunch of little pieces of cardboard filling up shelves and not realizing their true potential. wink I'm sure this new update and the Selling options will be a good thing for the site and help it grow.

On a user page you have User Info/Bio, Seller Profile, Trading Opportunities. On a page for a specific card, however, you have Card Image/Info, USERS SELLING, Inventory/Tradelist, In Your Decks, Wishlist, Trading Opportunities. Personally, I would rather not have to see/scroll past a list of people selling the card. Now I would never request that it be removed or be able to be turned off because that's where you're trying to go with this site by adding the Buying/Selling and if you can make this place profitable then it can only lead to improvements for us users. My suggestion, however, would be to move the Selling information farther down the page order: Card Image/Info, Inventory/Tradelist, In Your Decks, Wishlist, USERS SELLING, Trading Opportunities. This way users wouldn't have to scroll past a list of people selling the card just to get to the fields used to update their inventories.

Looking to flip some blue cards into some red cards.
