Topic: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

Hey all;

Can some EDH vets take a look at this deck and tell me if i'm missing anything super important for the format?

I'm basically working with cards i have (mostly newer), but am willing to pick up a few additional cards you think they are must haves in the deck.

Thanks!

Re: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

I play a TON of EDH and also run a Grim-grin build.  Here is mine:  http://deckbox.org/sets/139813

I know the current version is different than what I have listed here by a few cards but, in general, this is about as polished of a list as you'll find out there and I strongly recommend picking up every card there if you decide you're serious about the deck.

Here is a link to a previous discussion I had on this same topic; the last entry is a fairly up-to-date breakdown on what cards you should focus on getting and how important they are to the strategy overall.

EDH deck breakdowns are massive topics so let's start there and see if that answers most of your questions.

I actually Have a grimgin-corpse born edh deck as well have a look at it and see if you see any ideas you like from it if you want. smile

Awesome, thanks for the replies gents.

I updated the deck list after a trip to the card shop this afternoon... I'll keep working on it, but this is what I'll be playing tonight during my very first EDH game.

Thanks again!

Re: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

I hope you have lots of fun!  EDH is by far my favorite format and I enjoy seeing it flourish.

After looking at your deck I feel I should point out that my Grim-grin is an all-zombie* build.  There are probably many other Grim-grin builds that go the "good stuff" route and still make excellent use of him.  So, wkvd, this being your first EDH deck ever you might want to start with a "good stuff" build and if EDH becomes a consistent format you can switch to something like mine later if you want.

* I run one filth because hordes of zombies that can't be blocked are too good to pass up.  Every other creature in the deck is a zombie according to the Gatherer database.

Makes sense - I certainly added more Zombies, and will probably continue to add more as I refine the deck. I do like Enchantments however -  board effects are fun and get the party started, so to speak.

I enjoyed my first EDH experience. Some notes for future games;

- People do NOT like Painful Quandary played early.
- People will kill you if you have cast Rooftop Storm for a free Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Grimgrin, Corpse-Born

If only Gravecrawler had made an appearance...

Good times... wink

I would like to clarify my statement, my deck is not entirely zombies; Zombies are simply the only creature type.  I run lots of enchantments, artifacts and spells.

I am glad you enjoyed your first EDH experience and hope you continue to do so.  I too am often killed when Rooftop Storm hits the board because my opponents know that the game is about to end if they don't.  It's remarkable what a group of people sworn to kill each other can accomplish when faced with a common threat. wink  Don't lose hope, the combo win is very rewarding!

Re: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

The owner of my LGS gave me a piece of good advice for playing EDH;

"Look weak, stay strong."

Re: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

That is sound advice.  smile

Re: First EDH Deck, Comments please!

I know they are a tad pricey if you are going for on-the-cheap, but Cabal Coffers and Volrath Stronghold can definitely accelerate any deck with black.
