Topic: Help with a deck
I am new to Magic, and have close to 1000 cards. I have built a red/black deck, but i would really appreciate it if someone could help me build the best deck possible with all of my cards. Thanks

Sadly you're going to have to give us more than that. Could you provide a link to the deck you built for us to look at? What sort of theme were you looking to go with? Any/all input you can provide will help us make better, more informed suggestions for your deck.
This is what I have right now http://deckbox.org/sets/193308
This is all of my cards http://deckbox.org/sets/192929
Also, Im not really sure what kind of theme I want. I would prefer a deck that does a lot of damage and gets good monsters out quickly. Color doesn't matter.
Alrighty... for one, that's sort of the goal of almost every deck, so it'd help to be a bit more specific, but I gather you're just starting out so it's cool, everyone has to learn sometime.
I've started looking at your collection and you certainly have an eclectic mix from a large number of sets. I'm guessing you purchased someone else's collection? You have some useful cards but the biggest problem is that you only have one of most of them. I'll keep looking and see what I can figure out for you, but I'm guessing that some of the other members here will be of greater assistance as it looks like your best option will be to play Pauper (only commons are allowed) or just keep to casual games until you can amass some more powerful cards.
I'll keep looking, but it will likely take a few days for me to come up with anything decent.
Yes. I purchased a collection, and I guess what I was trying to say that Im not trying to focus on a theme, just individual cards that do a lot of damage. Also, I just want a deck that will make me competitive against my friends, not play in tournaments.
What sorts of things do they (your friends) run?
Nothing too fancy. 2 color decks similar to mine, no themes, just good cards put in a deck. And Im still new to the game, so I dont know how good those decks are compared to anything else.
What are some of the card combos you're looking at? The idea is that if you're facing something REALLY nasty, it might take some added creativity on our parts.
What do you mean by card combos?
As in multiple cards that they're playing that work off one another. For instance, in my werewolf deck (seen here http://deckbox.org/sets/164784) almost all of the creatures are normal humans but they work off of Moonmist that I would play during combat, preventing all damage to my creatures while also transforming them into werewolves (in turn taking out their creatures while making all of mine much larger). That then ties in with Immerwolf who prevents them from reverting back to their human forms.
Does that make sense?
Yes, but are you talking about my cards, or friends' cards? With mine, I dont think I have the collection to make combo cards, nor do I necessarily want them. And Im not too familiar with my friends cards to pick up on their combos.

Since you're new to the game, I think your best bet is to start with single color decks (or color + artifact). Once you're comfortable building a mono-color deck, then you can work with splashing other colors in. The way you talk there are a few options as far as how you can build. You can either go for big creatures with a bit of mana ramping, you could go with smaller creatures that you can pump up into bigger ones, or you can just forgo all that and go with a simple-yet-effective burn deck. They all have pros and cons, the biggest of which is that people HATE playing against burn decks, so I would suggest that if you're not shooting for tournaments you just avoid doing more than simply splashing in a bit of burn for control purposes. All colors have one way or another to boost the amount of mana you can get, but each has it in different ways. I would suggest picking whether you want to start small and pump them up or if you want the big creatures to be the primary focus. Then look at your cards and find one you like. It doesn't have to be a great card, in fact some of the most fun I've had was finding a bad card and building a playable deck around it. For example, if you chose Zombie Master, your first bet would be to stick with Zombies, so that it's ability has the maximum benefit. Then you'd want to think about how you can protect it from various things that may come up. If none of your friends plays white, you may not need to worry about something like Swords to Plowshares, but a well-timed Boomerang could be just as deadly. As it is, your deck is too scattered to really be of much help in making it better, and not knowing what your budget is, it's tough to say what to get. I could say "go track down a Maze of Ith, but if you don't have $40+ to drop on a single card, it's kind of a pointless suggestion.
One more thing, since this is casual, you may be able to sneak an Ashnod's Coupon in as an extra card for fun. Me and a buddy of mine do that to each other periodically, and it's always good for a laugh. Just make sure you remove it if you ever play a sanctioned event, since it's highly illegal to play it
Thanks. Im not looking to spend any more money on cards atm, but maybe when Im more familiar with the game. and become more competitive I will. Also, for a mono-colored deck, what color should I use with the cards I already have? Out of the 5, which do I have the best cards to make a decent deck?
The problem is, you have few cards that have multiple copies. A good deck isn't just about the cards in the deck, it's also about how often you can get the cards you need in your hand. With the limitation that you don't want to spend any more money on your card pool, it really hinders what you could build. Since it's almost midnight, and I work tomorrow, I really don't want to peruse your entire library, but with a bunch of one-off cards I would say any spell with an effect like Brainstorm would be something to consider. I'm not sure if you have anything like that, and am not sure of other options offhand (although a few of the others around here probably could mention a few), but I'm sure you can find something similar at a local shop for a reasonable price (there are many effects like that in the "bulk common/uncommon" category). Controlled draws make getting the right cards a bit more likely. Tutors are another option, but the best ones (Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor) are both restricted in Vintage and banned in most other formats. Another thing to consider is the Scry ability. If any of your cards have Scry, it will act as a deck filter when you play it. Scry works by letting you look at a number of cards off the top of your library and decide whether to put it on top or bottom of your library (getting rid of cards you don't need) and the order that they come up. In other words, if a card says Scry 2, you can look at the top two cards of your library. If you like the cards, you can put them back as is, or you can switch their order (draw the second card first) or put one or even both on the bottom of your library.
I have to second everything the_wizard_666 said. Your biggest problem is simply not having multiples of most cards to give you any consistency.
I was referring to your friends for the card combos, as it would be nice to know if you're playing against people with quality constructed decks (at which point you would almost definitely have to go out and buy some more cards to be competitive) or if they're also running mostly one-offs like it appears you will be (so if they only have one of most of the cards they like, then you're on a more level playing field and can be more effective).
From having looked at your cards just a little bit, I would suggest trying to go through each color you have and looking to see what cards YOU like the most (or put another way, is there a card or two that you think would be fun to play?). Then you can use those as a starting point to build a couple of mono colored decks (hell, build one for each color) and play them to see which color you like, which plays the best, what you like, etc.
At the moment I would say you could start with a mono black deck that tries to center around Harvester of Souls, but depending on your competition quality, and what you like in your collection, you might want to go another route.
