Topic: More Crazy Standard Deck Ideas... Win, Lose, or Draw?

So the feedback for my "Something Smells Fishy" deck on Tappedout was less than positive sad, which means, I spent about 15 minutes thinking up a new, weird deck idea to have fun with in Standard format.  I welcome any/all comments, even negative ones, as long as you're constructive and help the idea along (even if you're helping it along to the scrapyard).

Here's the new deck:  http://deckbox.org/sets/218318

The basic premise here is to run with Shimian Specter - I don't know how this card isn't seeing more play - and exile a LOT of the opponent's deck.  The key is to keep them unblockable, which can be achieved with Artful Dodge, Ghostform or even more permanently with Tricks of the Trade.  You swing with the Specter(s), they're unblockable, BAM you're getting a Surgical Extraction without any mana cost that you can repeat.  They pull a Mana Leak and you don't want to worry about those any more, DONE!  I'm also liking this idea because I can make my Specter unblockable, cast Unsummon on their favorite creature, and BAM, yank them too.

Deranged Assistant and Gilded Lotus help do a little bit of ramping (I know the lotus costs five, but it provides three mana), as the four drop spot is really packed, but outside of using Heartless Summoning I'm not really sure how to fix that (comments welcome there).

Evil Twin works to either take out their Legends via the Legend rule or to copy the best creature on the field, and then take out theirs.  Either that or they give me 3x more specters.  Talrand is really just in here to be another target for them to worry about - and if he happens to create some drakes along the way, that's just an added bonus.

Lastly, the only remaining challenge is to keep cards in the opponent's hand.  Enter Sign in Blood and Bloodgift Demon.

Anyway, I'm open to any thoughts on yet another odd idea.

Well, the answer to that question is three fold.

  1. It's a 2/2 Flier for 4 mana with the restriction of requiring two black and is very susceptible to burn spells with only two toughness (and Heartless Summoning would leave it open to a single Gut Shot or any other burn spell, so definitely don't do that).

  2. For 4 mana, most black players would rather play something to more quickly end the game, not stall it out.  And when you take into consideration that you have a whole bunch of extra cards in there to help it get through, it obviously doesn't do the job itself, like a lot of other cards do.

  3. There are cheaper options to do essentially the same thing.  See Surgical Extraction.

But, as far as the premise of the deck goes, I like the idea.  Essentially get them to the point of only having lands in there deck is actually rather humorous.  I think you really should play on that fact and run some Surgical Extractions, and then really pair both up accordingly with other spells.  This deck is just begging to be a control deck, but it is too spread out.  Definitely needs some more straight out destruction and disruption.

Destroy or counter something big, Surgical Extraction.  Unsummon/Vapor Snag, attack with the Specter.  I think you need to worry a lot less about tying up their creatures with things like Sleep and making your guys unblockable, instead focus your efforts more on just removing them from play in whatever way possible.  If you can bounce or destroy everything they have, why do you need your guy to be unblockable?  Plus, that would give you far more options for exile targets.

Sorry for rambling, it is late...

Re: More Crazy Standard Deck Ideas... Win, Lose, or Draw?

I'll definitely cede those points to you as they're right on the money.  BUT, given the prevalence of Surgical Extraction in standard play, the fact Shimian Specter hasn't gotten ANY love is surprising to me.  Although that might be a function of the fact that most of my real competitive play came back in revised and such when Hypnotic Specter was an absolute beast - and all he did was make you drop a card...

I'll give it another look in the AM and can agree that I've gone overboard with the unblockable effects, I realistically could drop down to just 3-4x Artful Dodge and that would cover me.  I'm staying away from the rotating cards as I'm not really likely to have but one FNM I'd be able to partake in before then, so that sort of takes out Surgical Extraction.  I'll definitely aim for more removal/control aspects.  I just love the idea of attacking with the Specter, unsummoning one of their key creatures, and BAM that sucker and all of his friends are gone.

Thanks for the input!  And it's no trouble if you ramble, I know half the ideas I post on here are hair-brained anyway. wink

Re: More Crazy Standard Deck Ideas... Win, Lose, or Draw?

I've actually pulled all the pieces together for this deck and am thinking I might run it at FNM just to see what happens. Thus, I'm bumping this thread to try and get some thoughts/input before it sees play.

A few thoughts/concerns.

First, I feel forced to choose between removal (the traditional way) and Unsummon type effects.  I'm inclined to go the Unsummon route simply to be able to then exile all those threats using Shimian Specter - BUT, then if I run into some crazy aggro, I'm likely up the creek.  How do I juggle this mess?  Or is the 9 unsummon/2 outright removal good enough?  I'm sideboarding a bunch of other removal stuff and situational fixes (i.e. Cremate).

Second, I don't like the fact that my major plays don't hit until at least turn three (if I get a Deranged Assistant) into play.  But I'm also not aware of any standard legal ramping in blue/black.  I mean I could put in Traveler's Amulet to ensure the color mix - if anything I would prefer this over Gilded Lotus - but I would need at least 2x of them to really get me anywhere.

Third, I have the draw effects to speed both my and my opponent's draws to ensure there's something for my Specters to exile - but without four specters and Evil Twins, I fear they will never see the field.  Do I need MORE drawing?  I could easily bump to 4x Sign in Blood.

Fourth, the total lack of anything at the three drop has not escaped me - although flashing back Think Twice is three and with a Deranged Assistant I could easily be casting one of my majors on turn three.  The option for Unsummons, Silent Departures, and all that other stuff is also available.  Do I need to stress about this at all?

Lastly, to give you some insight into the meta I observed at last week's FNM at my LGS - there were 10 players, three running some sort of Golgari build (myself included), my GF playing my "It's In Da Bible!" deck (with very limited success sad ), one R/B zombie deck premised on Blood Artist, two all out aggro decks (one G/W and the other mono Red), and I believe three Azorius builds - likely all centering on Geist of St. Traft.  The only reason I think my deck could perform well is the total absence of flyers outside of the three Azorius players.  The G/W aggro had Restoration Angel but an Unsummon in combat when they try to trick my Specter could easily resolve that issue.  Evil Twin can copy Geist and legend rule him.  Everything else is relatively easy to slow down enough that I could make my play.

Thoughts?

I will admit I haven't sat and considered every RTR option to include here, but you'll note I've included the 1x Cyclonic Rift that I have in here (and could easily see this becoming a quick 4x of for this deck) - instant speed, remove ALL their nonland permanents and then I get my pick of the litter with the specters.

Re: More Crazy Standard Deck Ideas... Win, Lose, or Draw?

If you need more ramp you could use turn 3 for mana fixing. Chromatic Lantern comes to mind.
Trepanation Blade might be interesting on your flyers.
