Topic: [EDH] [Opinions] Wort's Extended Family

Well, after getting a suggestion in the EDH Thursday thread, I decided to pull together a BR Goblin deck with Wort, Boggart Auntie as the commander.  I'd appreciate your opinions and feedback.

Wort's Extended Family

Aside from Wort's ability to return goblin cards from my graveyard to my hand, I've included lots of other fun goblins that add synergy to the deck.  There's Goblin Lackey, Goblin Recruiter, and Goblin Ringleader. And since I'm hoping to retreive Goblins from my graveyard, I might as well have one that benefits from all that death: Knucklebone Witch.

In addition to loads of Wort's kith and kin, I'm running about 10% each enchantments, sorcery, and instants, plus one Planeswalker, Chandra Nalaar.

Playtesting has been a blast--it's a fun deck.  One fun trick was to cast Earwig Squad for its Prowl cost, remove three cards from an opponent's library, and then sack it with Warren Weirding. The next turn, I'd bring it back using Wort's  ability (see Wort, Boggart Auntie) and would cast it again to remove three more.

It will get even more fun when my Goblin Sharpshooter arrives, especially when I am able to pair it with a Basilisk Collar.

I think that deck doesn't have enough Goblins....

I don't play EDH, so I don't know if it's appropriate for the format, but Eldrazi Monument and Krenko go hand in hand...

Re: [EDH] [Opinions] Wort's Extended Family

You've got a lot of lands in here that really aren't doing you much good.  You'll almost never get anything out of Valakut with  only 10 mountains in your deck, so it is basically a mountain that comes into play tapped, which is no good.  Reliquary Tower seems pointless, as you'll probably never ever have more than seven cards in hand playing goblins.  And pretty much all the lands you have that come into play tapped should be dropped in favor of more basic lands.

That being said, the meat of the deck looks pretty good.  I will say you definitely want Lightning Greaves in here.  Rakdos Keyrune also seems good in here as a little ramp or even just a good creature that is immune to sorcery speed removal.  I'd probably drop all of the auras in here, as they will usually get you 2-for-1'd unless you can protect them, which you don't really have means to do that in this deck.  Steam Blast seems like it would wipe your boardstate as much as, if not more than, your opponents.  I'd probably replace that with Mizzium Mortars.

All in all, I'd say it looks pretty decent.  Change up a few things, and this deck will probably be badass.

In addition to the esteemed Dr's analysis, I'd also add 6 more lands to make sure you can get stuff out early in the game.  Nothing worse than needing that one black and continuing to pull non-lands.

Also, no real need for the Blackcleave Goblin unless you are planning on an amazing 10-turn infect win-con against someone big_smile

Am I missing seeing Goblin Piledriver in the list?

If you have these handy, they will dramatically improve the speed of your deck:

- Aether Vial (put stuff into play for free)
- Wheel of Fortune / Wheel of Fate (reload Goblins into hand)
- Goblin Shaman lets you Champion a Goblin so you can insulate yourself somewhat against mass removal, like the Boggart Mob does.  A Crypt Champion does the same and may net you another Goblin from your yard in the process as well.
- Mana Echoes - gives you colorless per creature of that type in play...dump out Goblins fast!

Other considerations:

Door of Destinies - makes Goblins big, fast
Coat of Arms - ditto

If you were purposely not playing artifacts, consider a Shattering Spree and/or a Shatterstorm, as just about anyone else you are playing will be.

Lastly, seems like a couple of EDH staples, Sol Ring and Skullclamp, are missing..along with perhaps a Demonic Tutor and/or Vampiric Tutor to go get your Goblin Recruiter, which is really the key to any Goblin deck.

Re: [EDH] [Opinions] Wort's Extended Family

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Sadly, I don't have a Goblin Piledriver.  I agree on the implausibility of infect.  My thoughts were that it can be a boon when blocking a buffed attacker (any bonus on toughness), since the -1/-1 will endure past end-of-turn buff fades.  Still probably not the best.

I'll look into those other cards.  I can't find "Goblin Shaman" in the card database. Did you mean to recommend Lightning Crafter?

Valakut was a carry-over from my original all-red EDH deck.  I agree that it is not very valuable now.

I have been considering artifacts, though I've never used them much.  I have Lightning Greaves, and I will soon have a Basilisk Collar to go with the Goblin Sharpshooter I just picked up.

I appreciate the tips!

Good luck, Goblins is fun to play and play against.
