Topic: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

Since so much of M14 has been spoiled already, just curious what your thoughts are: http://www.mythicspoiler.com/m14/index.html

The slivers are straight up scary. +3/+3, doublestrike, +2/+0, hellrider sliver, haste, first strike.  I hope it makes slivers competitive in standard.

Scavenging ooze in standard?  That is awesome, that card is too good and it'll bring the price down.  Hopefully something keeps a lid on deathrite shaman and reanimator strategies.

Some awesome EDH cards there too - devout invocation is like the best hellion eruption yet.  Rise of the dark realms is a grimoire that can't be shattered.  Ring of three wishes is 3 tutors in one card. Primeval bounty is nuts.  Ajani's Chosen is something like Kemba for enchantments.

Ogre Battledriver is probably supposed to be a replacement for hellrider in RDW when it rotates.  A turn slower, but it might be OK.  We got a cheaper/weaker guttersnipe and much weaker grave titan.

Any thoughts or standouts?

Permanents that proliferate would give you a tutor every turn, but I mean it already gives you 3 demonic tutors, albeit at 20 mana.  3 tutor effects are probably enough to end any game on their own.

I'm a little concerned with some of the EDH cards they've been printing lately.  They're printing huge splashy effects - Omniscience, Enter the Infinite, Worldfire (which would've been fine if it emptied your mana pool) - and some of these new cards like Rise of the Dark Realms, Ring of Three Wishes.  Yet more stuff that pretty much ends the game on the spot.

Seems to me it pushes everyone else towards more control - tons of board wipes, tons of counters - and makes colors without control much weaker (red/green for sure, white/black less so).  As if the many many combos out there wasn't enough to push everyone to control.

I guess the politics of the game solve some of these problems - in a previous playgroup there was a guy with a Jhoira of the Ghitu deck that would just suspend Jokulhaups (or its many imitators) and then a fattie creature.  So everyone just killed him first, until he brought a deck that was more at our power level.

The French EDH rules solve this by starting at 30 life which makes aggro viable, so you never get to cast these game-ending bomb spells.  But regular EDH seems to be more and more "who gets to resolve the game-ending spell" first.  And these new spells are pushing in that direction.

Sorry about the rant, just got thinking.

Re: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

Well EDH is getting more and more complicated. I agree cards like Omnicience and Worldfire are becomine a nuisence. If the rings are added then EDH becomes to easy to win. Increasing Ambition, Diabolic tutor, and other fetch cards are becoming EDH staples. If these types of cards continue then EDH in my opinion will become very easy for a strong deck with lots of cards to destroy a smaller deck that maybe the player cant afford all the large cards. It would just make EDH not as fun anymore...

Re: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

I thought Worldfire was banned in EDH.

It is indeed.  I think that's a good example of what I was trying to say.  Worldfire is definitely designed for EDH because it is unusable in any other format.  That's a good example of the stupid powerful spells they're printing for EDH, without realizing or caring how much they warp EDH games.

Re: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

It's not just for EDH.  It does enable a combo (Thragtusk+Worldfire).  It's also for Timmy type players that go 'Hey, this is a cool effect'.  I don't think it was designed with EDH in mind, and was quickly banned from EDH.

Re: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

I think it was entirely for EDH since it never has & never will see constructed play outside of EDH.  It is a big timmy effect and works into a strange johnny combo, but one that can only really be played in EDH - it is too slow anywhere else (lets be honest, thragfire omnidoor was never a real deck).  WoTC just didn't think of floating mana to re-cast your general, hence the ban.

Obzedat works, as does any exile effect like O-ring, fiend hunter, AoS, or any "EOT" blink effects like glimmerpoint stag, aetherling, or any of these.

Thragfire omnidoor did win a couple events, so it was, by definition, a 'real' deck.  Besides, you can't judge something as being designed only as an EDH card just because no one has won a big event with it.  That's like saying that Notion Thief was designed as an EDH card wink

There are lots of cards that are playable in Standard, but not part of the 'top tier' deck metagame.  Some have big, cool effects.  The most recent pro tour had a couple cards that I saw being used that are considered 'EDH' cards...The GB enchantment that gets stuff back from your graveyard and the Red enchantment that makes whatever you cast random.

I would put that enchantment (Possibility storm) in the same category as Worldfire.

Re: M14 Spoilers - Standouts?

So Burning Earth - is it going to be a thing?  Seems to slow for eternal formats, I was really hoping they'd reprint Price of Progress to punish greedy mana bases in modern, but maybe a thing in standard?  Lots of players run very few basics, so turning off lands on T4 seems ok if I'm playing RDW.  It is no hellrider, but I could see siding it in over Exava.  Sure beats the new Ogre Battledriver.

EDIT: Also, another llanowar/fyndhorn elves, shock & doom blade are back, and they're printing a strictly worse caravan vigil.  Also, opportunity - just EDH or can control decks use it because it is actually an instant, albeit 6 mana.  And ratchet bomb is back, which is awesome.
