Description
Hello! Long time since a deck add! As we know, the Pioneer format was recently announced and it actually has me really excited! It's the new modern, essentially, with seemingly Modern taking the old spot of Legacy. An issue with Modern was the speed at which it was played which could only be rectified by a lot of banning, and that's not necessarily fun. So we have Pioneer! Pioneer is a new format set from Return to Ravnica and forward through Standard and whatever new sets. The only initial bans are the 5 fetchlands from Khans, which will help slow the format, and that is perfectly okay.

My first deck I'm interested in for this format is a rendition of my favorite Standard deck over the past decade, UW Approach of the Second Sun.

Approach of the Second Sun is an incredibly fun win condition. On cast you gain seven life and shuffle it into your library 7 from the bottom. However, we have to play the long control game to be able to get there. That seven life is huge and we have plenty of draw to get back to it or maybe we are just sitting on 2 copies and go that route. Either way, we are playing a control shell.

We have a huge counter suite to play with in this deck. Absorb counters anything and gains 3 life, Dovin's Veto counters non-creature and can't be countered itself, which is huge in a potential mirror or any other non-creature spell we can't let resolve such as a PW, Disallow hits everything as well as some potential bad triggers. Even stops a Field of Ruin and just puts our opponent down 3 mana on the turn which could be huge if our mana base isn't doing so well, and finally Essence Scatter for any creatures we might need to get out of the way. These are going to be our most likely cards to be boarded out for a G2 or G3 as we need.

Sweepers, we got those. The deck originally ran Fumigate and now we have another great addition with Supreme Verdict being available. These are also able to be boarded out if it's a non-creature matchup.

Finally we have our cantrips. Opt is pricesless, one mana scry and draw is valuable at all stages of the game and digs us 2 closer to an Approach. Glimmer of Genius makes a return from the original decklist as it vitually digs 4 cards at instant speed. The energy is worthless to us, though, but the card is great. Dig Through Time isn't great by any means early game, but in the late game, especially with another card I'll be discussing in a moment, is highly valuable. Look at the top seven and choose 2, for potentially just Two Blue is HUGE.

Finally our last few cards. Detention Sphere is good removal for whatever we might run into and is more resiliant than a Deputy of Detention. Search for Azcanta // Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin is wonderful. For a few mana if we have it left we can dig 4 cards a turn and subsequently it helps fill our yard to flip and makes casting Dig Through Time much easier..

We have 3 planeswalkers mainboard, Narset, Parter of Veils gives us value by digging 3 cards and the only misses we will ever have are lands. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria is a great backup win condition if we need it. And Teferi, Time Raveler is just obnoxious and protects us on our turn and can bounce and raw an opponents threat.

Our sideboard consists of a few cards for different types of hate. 4 Layline of Sanctity helps protect against any burn or target hand hate. Gideon of the Trials returns from the original as a way to protect us so we can't lose and possibly gain enough life to go back into the positive as well as protects us from just losing. Disenchant to remove enchantments and artificats that are causing problems. Ixalan's Binding as a form of permanent hate that we can easily protect with our counter-spel suite. Cyclonic Rift as a way to remove an opponents entire board state and finally a fourth copy of Approach of the Second Sun.

I look forward to testing this oer the next few weeks on MTGO with the implementation of Pioneer into the client. There are bound to be hugely broken decks and honestly, Dig Through Time might get a ban as it's easy to turn on and is super powerfu.
