If we look back a couple years, cascade decks were seeing far less use than they are today. Being able to fill a deck with interactive controlling cards, and then use Violent Outburst as a win condition to find Crashing Footfalls is the type of game plan the old Living End decks wish they had been able to execute. This is a Temur control deck at its roots.

Making two Rhinos for a very small mana cost is very powerful, and Crashing Footfalls ended up being the perfect choice against Ichikawa's opponents at the Showcase. He had enough countermagic for combo decks, but also so much value with everything that Crashing Footfalls brings to the table.

While Modern Horizons 2 was legal for this event, the format hadn't developed to the point it's gotten to today. At the time Yuuki won the Showcase the format was quite different, and the Crashing Footfalls deck was a bit more popular than it is now. It has taken some time for the format to fully develop as players realize all the different ways they can utilize the most powerful set in Modern's history.
