Game plan. Pure Azorius draw-go for the 1v1 meta: eighteen counterspells, eleven pieces of spot removal, four sweepers, and a card-advantage war fought on two fronts — the monarch (Palace Jailer, Court of Grace) and the planeswalkers. Elminster arrives at five as an engine that pays for itself: +2 draws and scries two, and his static makes your next instant that turn cost up to two less — a free Counterspell or Absorb held up every turn he survives. Kills are unhurried: Celestial Colonnade and Faerie Conclave beats, Shark Typhoon cycles, Snapcaster chip damage, faerie dragon tokens off his -3.
Mulligan guide. The meta is aggressive (Phelia and Tifa between them are a fifth of the field): keep two-three lands with cheap interaction — Swords-class removal, Spell Snare, Force Spike, On Thin Ice, Oust. Solitude is the best card in your seventy-five against aggro; hands containing it keep loosely. Pure card-advantage hands with no play before turn three are mulligans.
Key interactions. Every scry feeds Elminster's discount: Omen of the Sea, Search for Azcanta, a fetch plus Brainstorm — stack a scry immediately before your expensive instant. Palace Jailer exiles their best creature AND crowns you: while you hold the monarchy, you draw two a turn in a format with no sideboards to answer it. Winds of Abandon is a one-sided wrath in 1v1. Terminus plus Mystic Sanctuary or Jace tops is the one-mana reset. Narset, Parter of Veils halves every opposing draw spell.
Lines to look for. Turns 1-4: land, trade, loot. Turn 5: Elminster with a counter open, or Jailer into monarch defense. From turn 7: Cryptic Command and Mystic Confluence take over every stack fight; The Wandering Emperor flashes in on their combat.
Common pitfalls. Tapping out for Elminster against tempo decks — land him turn seven with backup instead. Losing the monarch to a 1/1 you chose not to block costs two cards a turn. His -3 counts the exiled card's mana value: exiling Cryptic Command makes four dragons — set the top with Jace or Brainstorm first, do not fire it blind.
