Just out of curiosity - What purpose is the breeding pit serving in this deck? Is it just generating disposable creatures?

since  most of the creatures are higher than normal casting cost the  pit just gives you disposable blockers, i know there  are better  choices, I also think in  one of the incarnations  of this deck it had another purpose, i just never took it out.
