Re: new to magic. Black/White token deck suggestions? (9 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
We all started somewhere man. Hell, when I started I had a pack of Prophecy and two packs of Scourge, which my friends ended up adding some commons to in order to piece together a crappy deck, and I just sorta learned from there.
Anyway, I'm far from a Standard expert (mainly play Legacy, although I'd like to build a Standard deck or two), so I can't advise on much specifically, but generally speaking, play a few games, figure out what works in the deck and what doesn't. From there, trim it down a bit. Add extra copies of the cards that work, and remove the ones that don't really do much. Basic stuff, but easy to overlook. Having more than one copy of a card that helps will allow you to draw the card more often, thus getting it played more often. Aside from that, I may come up with something, but not before someone else comes up with something better

Re: I Need To Get More Cards For trading (8 replies, posted in General Discussion)
How old are we talking here? Most game stores sell out of print booster boxes, they cost a bit more but you'll get a ton of older cards that way. Only other suggestion is to find someone who's getting out of the game and buy their collection. Again, it can be costly, but in the long run it's still infinitely cheaper than buying packs.

I was reading up on it and it appeared to me that time stamps were applicable to Humility. Spent a LOT of time before posting that, so I'm pretty confident in my assertion...that said, I may very well be wrong...maybe it's an "Ask Wizards" question?

Re: casual Humility Deck- looking for help building (10 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
Remove Enchantments would take care of the Humility issue, but an easier way to deal with it is to run either a creatureless deck or to run a weenie/token deck with equipment to gain their boons. Note that any creature enchanted or equipped with anything prior to Humility being used will lose it's benefit, but anything that is attached to a creature afterward keeps it, which makes using an equipment deck the better choice. Breeding Pit could be mildly amusing with Humility since your thrulls would become 1/1 creatures instead of 0/1...there's probably better options out there, but it's late and I'm a bit drunk Anyway, hope this helps a bit.

Re: new to magic. Black/White token deck suggestions? (9 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
Well, a bit more info is needed.
1. What format are you playing?
2. Do you have the deck posted in it's current build?
3. What sort of budget are you looking to work with, and how much do you already have invested.
Presuming you're looking to play Standard, I would say that a few packs of Innistrad would be a good start (a booster box is better if it's in your price range), as there are a good number of choice rares in the set. However, it cycles out of Standard in the fall, so you may want to stick with the current block and just get the stuff you need from the previous block as singles.
Anyway, I would generally suggest not buying more than two booster boxes of any particular set, and would likely lean closer to a single one, filling in gaps by buying singles. The reason is that a single box should get you a playset of every common in the set, give or take. Two boxes will net roughly a playset of every uncommon, and between the two you'll have at least one of most of the rares/mythics. Also, buying packs for specific cards is a waste of money...although it's fun to gamble on what you might get out of it, at the same time the odds of pulling any specific card in a set is fairly slim.
So yeah, if you can elaborate on the numbered points a bit, a bit more help may come along

srrogers1985 wrote:Well I bought a box of Gatecrash and got a lot of good things that I was looking for and some good trade stock. I think I came out ahead a little and ended up with about $150 in value.
What on earth did you open that you got more than the box's value?
If you tally it up, almost every box I've ever opened has put me ahead monetarily, at least while said box was standard-legal. Generally you'll pull a couple of chase rares, and if you're really lucky a chase foil. And even though you're not going to pull a mass of $50 cards, if you tally up all the $5 cards you pull out (not to mention the average of 2-3 $20+ cards I get in a box), the rares alone are typically enough to pull me even, and that's not even considering things like foils or $1-2 commons/uncommons that are used in almost every deck uses in Standard. Hell, buying a box typically gets me at least 3 of every common in the set, which makes filling in the holes cheaper overall. The problem is that when a set filters out of Standard, around 95% of the cards in a set depreciate almost overnight. Also, opening a box of boosters is just plain fun!

Re: B/W Spiteful Scavengers-casual-sugestions please (8 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
Admonition Angel would work...drop a land to exile Barren Glory, then cast Kaervek's Spite afterward. Everything will be sacrificed to the Spite, and Barren Glory will return as Admonition Angel dies. Oblivion Ring is a cheaper option to do the same thing. Your basic strategy should be to stall the opposition long enough to get everything you need in play. The Angel has the bonus of being landfall-based removal, so after exiling Barren Glory, you can still use it to get rid of problem permanents your opponent controls (just don't exile anything aside from Barren Glory from your side of the battlefield). As for lands, since both spells require more than one colored mana each, make sure you're running plenty of dual lands, or cards that can filter mana for you (personally I like Chromatic Sphere for the card draw, but there's plenty of other options as well...go with what suits you best). One well-placed Dark Ritual will also be able to trigger the Spite as well, so I'd include at least a couple of those as well, just in case. Also, throw some Tutors in as well, be it Demonic, Vampiric, or whatever...getting what you need when you need it is essential, assuming they would be an option for you (restricted in Vintage, banned in all other formats). Barring that, anything to either draw cards or shorten the deck will help. Fetch lands can help trim the deck down to the essentials, Land Tax can be used for the same purpose...even if you don't need the lands, it thins the deck out so you get something a bit more useful to you in your draw step (conveniently, you draw after your upkeep, so it'd be your deck minus three lands). Scroll Rack may be another viable option.
If I were running a similar deck, I'd try using this as a core for the deck.
4x Admonition Angel
4x Barren Glory
4x Kaervek's Spite
4x Dark Ritual
4x Land Tax
4x Oblivion Ring
4x Enlightened Tutor
I'd fill the list with low cost creatures to help defend until you are set up fully for the win, maybe some life gain (especially recurring life gain) to keep you alive, and a bit of mana ramp and/or card draw. For the lands, assuming you build the deck heavily as white with a splash of black, I'd keep it geared more heavily toward white, but with enough black to get the Spites out. Really, it could be all white save for three swamps and you'd be golden, because as soon as land tax triggers, you could pull your three swamps to your hand and go from there.
I hope this helps to at least give you a starting point for the deck. I'm actually kind of looking forward to seeing what you come up with

Re: Rarity tooltip (4 replies, posted in Site Discussion)
Rarity doesn't matter in that regard, no. However, I like to keep my rares in a binder separate from commons and uncommons, even if they're worth less than some of their lesser rarity counterparts. So in that regard, it does indeed make a difference.

Re: Modern noob (1 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
Replace Gruul Turf with Rootbound Crag. You also have no white mana generation, so Call of the Conclave should be cut. Creakwood Liege is good, but outside of the tokens he generates, he's not really helping you out all that much, so I'd say he's expendable. Same goes for Rise of the Hobgoblins. I would suggest Llanowar Elves or Birds of Paradise for mana ramp (not to mention one-drop chump blockers if needed...especially since the Birds give flying defense too). You'll need the mana later on anyway, so you should consider it. Also, this deck is screaming for Sprout Swarm, especially since you can simply tap creatures to pay for it with the buyback, making it a freebie. I would also consider possibly adding Doubling Season, even if it's only two copies, just to make it more likely that you'll pull the double-token effect, but that's not really necessary.
I don't know if it would be tournament-calibre...there's definitely a few tweaks that would be needed, but in casual Modern play I'm sure it'll hold it's own.

Re: RGB Counter Deck (6 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
Derp. Didn't read the card fully. Told you my brain wasn't working I was kind of in a rush, left for work like 5 minutes after I posted Anyway, it wouldn't make for an infinite loop, but Nature's Chosen would provide the means to tap the Gilder Bairn while simultaneously untapping the Lotus Vale to pull that off...there's other methods too (for example, Magewright's Stone + Ley Druid in addition to the Vale and Bairn, so that the Bairn is tapped to untap a forest, then the Vale used to trigger the Bairn, then using the Ley Druid to untap the Vale, then tapping a Forest to pay for the Magewright's Stone's activation, then repeat ad nauseum), but that seems like a bit more effort than it's worth in this deck...then again, using that to build up a creature to sacrifice to Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord would be a win condition of it's own...hmmm, maybe I should build a deck around that

Not to mention sets like Portal or Chronicles that use the same symbol on all rarities. I think those are the only two with that issue, but if I could find out the rarity without having to go to the card's page, that'd be a plus.

Re: RGB Counter Deck (6 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
No problem, I'm glad to help!
Also, I just discovered Gilder Bairn, and it seems like it would suit this deck amazingly well. The only thing is that it needs some way to tap it...and Bramblesnap would appear to do the job...Earthcraft would be better though, especially with a Lotus Vale in play to pay for the Gilder Bairn's activation cost...
As for the land balance, I'd adjust that last. Once you've finalized exactly what you want in your deck and know how much of each color you need, THEN you can get your balance right. I'd say this is a deck where 24 lands is warranted (I usually go 20, but with higher costs, you need to make sure you get enough mana out). But what lands those should be, well, just worry about that later when you know what you need.

Re: RGB Counter Deck (6 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
My brain is kinda not working right now, so I'm not gonna look in too deep here, but Fangren Firstborn would fit a bit better than Rubblebelt Raiders does...it doesn't get nearly as many counters on any one creature, but it boosts EVERY attacking creature instead. Also, Doubling Season is a must. You might also want to include Manamorphose for mana fixing (and card draw doesn't hurt either).

I remember that too, so I looked it up. It was restricted in Vintage and banned in Legacy in 2003, and also in Extended a few months later (by that point it was out of Standard anyway). The Vintage restriction was lifted in 2009, and the Legacy banning was lifted a few months after.

I've spent the last year or so chipping away at it, although only a few months of that has been on Deckbox. Seems every time I get close to finishing, I either buy up someone's collection or I get more new cards. That said, everything is inventoried now, I just need to transfer the remaining portion of my hard file onto Deckbox. I'm in the R's and am in no rush, so it may take a few more months to do, but I do try to knock a letter or two off whenever I get the urge

Re: There and Black agian...casual (sugestions) (4 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
I would suggest Balthor the Defiled if you're looking for something to replace the Demigod. You should also consider Entomb instead of (or in tandem with) Buried Alive. Buried puts more into the graveyard, but Entomb does it infinitely quicker. Also, Carrion Feeder works really well with Living Death...just sacrifice all your creatures to the Feeder, then cast Living Death for a one-sided Wrath of God. Also, one card that I just discovered for a similar deck that I'm running is It That Betrays. As far as I could tell, it was the only big Eldrazi card that would actually stay in the graveyard, which made it perfect for the game, and stealing your opponent's permanents is always worthwhile.

Re: Noob Deck Builder (1 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
You have far too much going on there, I can see why the deck flat out doesn't perform. You seem to know what it is exactly that you are trying to accomplish, so the best advice I can give is to trim the fat - take out the cards that don't work and/or don't fit the overarching plan, then bump up the quantities of the ones that do. The goal of mill is to deck your opponent, so aim for that...keep creatures that either feed it or can provide blockers to stall until you can. Don't worry too much about the boosts for your creatures, as you likely won't be using them to attack much, if at all. Also, don't overlook the power of draw spells...you are trying to deck your opponent, and if a card can make your opponent draw cards, it removes them from the library...such a strategy should be sparingly used though, since it can also give them exactly what they need to beat you, but it's something to consider as well.

Re: Black Zombie w/ Lion's Eye Diamond (1 replies, posted in Decks and Deckbuilding)
That deck is screaming for Isochron Scepter. Your biggest problem will be getting a Tutor out after discarding your hand to the Lion's Eye Diamond, and that is solved by the Scepter. However, I think the LED may be more of a hindrance than a help with this deck.
If you really want to work the LED into a deck, the best combo I've seen involves Grindstone and Painter's Servant to mill them on turn 1 (also requires a Dark Ritual to pull first turn):
Drop LED. Drop land. Drop Dark Ritual. Drop Grindstone. Drop Painter's Servant. Snap LED to pay for Grindstone's activation. Win.
