You know Magic 2012 is cycling out of Standard in October right?  Unless the Birds of Paradise and Flameblast Dragon get reprinted in the upcoming block, you may as well consider dropping those now, to keep from having to retool it later.

I got to thinking...you may want to include a set of Steelshaper's Gifts in the deck.  While it doesn't help you get the specific creatures you want on the battlefield any sooner, it DOES help you get the equipment you need when you need it.  And with such a varied set of equipment in the deck, this would definitely come in handy!

The problem is, you have few cards that have multiple copies.  A good deck isn't just about the cards in the deck, it's also about how often you can get the cards you need in your hand.  With the limitation that you don't want to spend any more money on your card pool, it really hinders what you could build.  Since it's almost midnight, and I work tomorrow, I really don't want to peruse your entire library, but with a bunch of one-off cards I would say any spell with an effect like Brainstorm would be something to consider.  I'm not sure if you have anything like that, and am not sure of other options offhand (although a few of the others around here probably could mention a few), but I'm sure you can find something similar at a local shop for a reasonable price (there are many effects like that in the "bulk common/uncommon" category).  Controlled draws make getting the right cards a bit more likely.  Tutors are another option, but the best ones (Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor) are both restricted in Vintage and banned in most other formats.  Another thing to consider is the Scry ability.  If any of your cards have Scry, it will act as a deck filter when you play it.  Scry works by letting you look at a number of cards off the top of your library and decide whether to put it on top or bottom of your library (getting rid of cards you don't need) and the order that they come up.  In other words, if a card says Scry 2, you can look at the top two cards of your library.  If you like the cards, you can put them back as is, or you can switch their order (draw the second card first) or put one or even both on the bottom of your library.

Since you're new to the game, I think your best bet is to start with single color decks (or color + artifact).  Once you're comfortable building a mono-color deck, then you can work with splashing other colors in.  The way you talk there are  a few options as far as how you can build.  You can either go for big creatures with a bit of mana ramping, you could go with smaller creatures that you can pump up into bigger ones, or you can just forgo all that and go with a simple-yet-effective burn deck.  They all have pros and cons, the biggest of which is that people HATE playing against burn decks, so I would suggest that if you're not shooting for tournaments you just avoid doing more than simply splashing in a bit of burn for control purposes.  All colors have one way or another to boost the amount of mana you can get, but each has it in different ways.  I would suggest picking whether you want to start small and pump them up or if you want the big creatures to be the primary focus.  Then look at your cards and find one you like.  It doesn't have to be a great card, in fact some of the most fun I've had was finding a bad card and building a playable deck around it.  For example, if you chose Zombie Master, your first bet would be to stick with Zombies, so that it's ability has the maximum benefit.  Then you'd want to think about how you can protect it from various things that may come up.  If none of your friends plays white, you may not need to worry about something like Swords to Plowshares, but a well-timed Boomerang could be just as deadly.  As it is, your deck is too scattered to really be of much help in making it better, and not knowing what your budget is, it's tough to say what to get.  I could say "go track down a Maze of Ith, but if you don't have $40+ to drop on a single card, it's kind of a pointless suggestion.

One more thing, since this is casual, you may be able to sneak an Ashnod's Coupon in as an extra card for fun.  Me and a buddy of mine do that to each other periodically, and it's always good for a laugh.  Just make sure you remove it if you ever play a sanctioned event, since it's highly illegal to play it tongue

It may be a bit pricier than you'd like, but Lightning Greaves was the first card that popped into my head when I read this.  And although it doesn't fit too well into your Cat theme, the Gatherer discussion page has an awesome life-gain combo with this - Daru Spiritualist + Starlit Sanctum = HUGE life gain.  And if you have a Leonin Shikari in play, it effectively kills any "target creature" effects.

Oh, I agree it would work, just not the way you intended it to tongue

I would also consider Hinterland Harbor in place of a few basic lands.  Looked it up, it's Standard-legal.  I know you're trying to avoid rares, but you could always swap it back out for basics if you do play Pauper.

Geist Snatch only targets creature spells, so I don't see how it could be used to protect enchantments...

Anyway, I like the idea man, hope it works.  I don't really know much as far as Standard goes...most of my cards are from Mirrodin block and earlier.  While I do have some later stuff, I don't really know many of the newer cards that well.  Let me know how well it works when you get the deck finished man smile

You can add the Unglued token cards and the Super Secret Tech from Unhinged to the list.  Aside from that, all the cards I have that are missing prices are on the list already, unless there's Vanguard cards I have that you don't.  Seems all the Vanguard cards are missing prices.

I only have 9 Aether Vials because I bought 3 or 4 boxes of Darksteel back in the day.  I know I have both the black and blue Bringers, and one other (either red or green, traded the white one ages ago), not really sure what else I've got.  The Lion's Eye I really didn't know about at all though...found that while inventorying the stuff I got from my buddy when his wife made him dump his collection.  Oh, I did find another gem too...foil Sword of Light and Shadow.  There's a bunch of other stuff, but I doubt anything else like the Lion's Eye will pop up.

That's a good point.  For some reason I was thinking Jhoira only worked for creatures as well.  And I kind've just noticed the going rate for Aether Vial myself...never paid attention since I never use them (have 9, all from Darksteel boxes I bought back in the day).  Of course, that's only because I don't run decks like this that would accelerate the number of counters on it, but still tongue

I just got to thinking...instead of Jhoira of the Ghitu, why not Aether Vial?  You can put multiples in play, unlike Jhoira, and you don't have to add a counter if you choose not to, so you could easily have a large creature drop every turn...and with Paradox Haze, you can not only build the counters faster, but you could drop more than one creature per turn!  Plus it doesn't have Jhoira's drawback to it.

Yeah, was thinking of that too.  I've got a huge library of cards that I'm still inventorying, so for me to turn something I won't use (or have 40 of or something) into something I need for a deck I'll actually use, it's kind of a no-brainer.  Just want to get the inventory up-to-date first, so I can at least have something for potential trade partners to peruse.  In my experience though, I love trading.  It's a nice feeling to be helped by others while they help you in return.  15 years of collecting video games (8 of which I've spent selling/trading online) has taught me that tongue

Wow, didn't know about Doom Blade...it's like getting a Dark Banishing for the price of a Terror!  Me like!

Anyway, I wish I could help a bit more, but my Standard knowledge is pretty craptacular.  More of a Vintage/Legacy guy myself.  And even that I'm still learning...it's a never-ending process really.

One more minor change - remove two of each basic land and add in 4 Dragonskull Summit.  No reason not to include a dual land in a two-color deck.

Ah, yes, that works.  As I said, I never really looked at everything up close, so I didn't notice that.  However, by using a suspend ability, it gives the opponent a bit of extra time to find a way to deal with the spell being brought in this way...unless you have a way to remove the counters as well, because even with 3 Paradox Hazes in play, you still have to wait until your next turn to get the card in play.  I may be missing something mind you,

Also, I agree.  With regard to Tutors, Vampiric > Diabolic.  If you can find one and can afford it, there's no reason not to include it in your deck instead.  Why didn't I think of that? Must've been tired or something tongue  Just remember though, it's also restricted, so no more than one in the deck.

I also agree with increasing the number of key cards in the deck so as to ensure a quicker draw.  Of course, if you can get the Bringer of the Black Dawn out early, you could always abuse the tutor ability to make sure you get what you want when you want it.

I'll admit, I didn't look through the entire deck list yet, but I did think about the Bringer of the Black Dawn.  The problems I forsee though is that a) with only one of each, you need to make sure you can get at least one out, if not both (two Tutors is not enough in my mind to do this), and b) getting enough mana to cast the Bringers (you may have this worked out, so if you do, feel free to disregard).  I'm not sure the best way to solve a) at this time, but the others I have some fairly easy options.  For b), you can simply add something like Darksteel Ingot to use the 5-mana alternate cost for the Bringers, or use Composite Golems.  Pentad Prism may be another option.  Pretty much anything that allows you to get Green or White mana to ease the casting cost of the Bringers would be a viable option (as I said, if you haven't worked this out already).

And I don't see a way to enter http://deckbox.org/mtg/Web into my inventory at all. I looked that page up a long time ago and tried that. Same thing with Lance. There's no button Add to Inventory.

If you go to the spot where it says how many you have in your Inventory, Trade List, or Wish List, you can actually click on the number and change it.  Then just look it up on your inventory page and edit the details.  It's not very clear that you CAN enter the numbers on the card's page, but you can.  Hope that helps smile

Well, that's what I figure.  As annoying as it was, I can live with it.  When that's the worst complaint I have about the site, I'm not too worried tongue

Haven't gone through it, and don't really have any major suggestions to offer at this time, but I do notice one thing - Demonic Tutor is restricted.  The system says you have a legal deck, but it actually wouldn't be legal to play.  Unless it's a casual deck, then feel free to disregard this post.

I ran into the same issue when adding Sentinel to my inventory.  Not sure if there's anything that can be done about it, but I did the same thing TyWoo suggested.  It's a time consuming annoyance, but it works.

Well, my first step is to go local.  I have a couple friends that play that I can trade with, and there's a couple shops that have a decent inventory.  Once the local resources are exhausted I can start looking into online resourses.  If nothing else, I'm sure I could get a decent return on the Lion's Eye Diamond I stumbled across while inventorying my cards tongue  Love finding good rares hiding in a box of commons tongue

Modifications applied. Next step: tracking down the cards I don't have...

You do raise a good point.  I'd rather keep the Manaforge Cinders at 4, but other than that I kind of like the idea.  I still am not convinced of Norn's Annex being a great fit, but it'd be worth a trial run...if nothing else, it puts 5 chances at hitting the combo (via either the Ensnaring Bridges or the Annexes) instead of 4 (with just the Bridges).  I also looked around a bit, and found Raid Bombardment, which I think would be a better fit here than Orcish Oriflamme would be...it triggers during the declare attackers step, so a creature could be pumped up after the attack is declared and still count towards it, whereas the Oriflamme only pumps the creatures up.  I'm thinking of taking your advice on diversifying the deck a bit, but going with this:

OUT
1x Blood Artist
1x Ornithopter
1x Captive Flame
1x Ensnaring Bridge
1x Animate Dead (sideboard)
1x Shallow Grave (sideboard)

IN
2x Norn's Annex (kind of a trial run, may increase or change it again if it doesn't work out, but worth a shot)
2x Raid Bombardment
2x Crawlspace (sideboard)

Thoughts?
