Just used this for the umteenth time and wanted to say thank you for the great work again. Saves me lots of time, thanks!

I think there's some solid advice in this thread already, but I thought I'd add my two cents with regards to a collection that's currently reasonably small but might grow much larger (this is where I started and where I ended up). My collection is ~35k cards now having started in Kaladesh block and there's only one way that I can feasibly deal with that quantity of cards - stored by set / collector number.

I have all my cards entered into my Deckbox inventory (the correct printing, including all basics). I do the vast majority of my deck brewing (mostly for EDH) digitally, either looking through my own inventory on Deckbox using the built-in filter or by looking around on Scryfall/EDHREC and then comparing the cards to my inventory. By doing so the only time I need to find a card physically is once I've decided I want it in a deck. With 35k cards, doing this is absolutely trivial when they're in set/collector number order and despite the size of my collection I can locate any single printing of any card in my collection in under a minute.

All of my cards are then stored in this way in drawers with dividers between each set. The sets are kept in chronological order of their release (another way I can locate a set easily, as I can look up when it was printed if I need to). I used to keep these in boxes, but as the collection grew I started to use some more specialist drawers. My tokens and basic lands are still kept in boxes elsewhere rather than all together as there's so many of them, but all the main cards are in these drawers. I've put a few photos, below.

I have a slight complication to add to this for my personal collection - for all the standard legal sets between Kaladesh and M21 I wanted to have "one complete set", i.e. one of each copy of the cards in those sets (excluding masterpieces, and later on, excluding all the individual alt-art cards. More on that below). For these sets I keep one copy of every card in a folder/folio as a "complete set".

Lastly, I do use my cards to play EDH, so I have around a dozen double-sleeved decks in deckboxes that I keep in a cupboard nearby. Thankfully Deckbox pro lets me assign a specific printing to my deck lists, so when I look up, e.g. "Lightning Greaves" I can see which printing is in what deck, and then I can work out which printings are not in a deck and then find a copy for a new deck if I need one.

Overall this method takes some admin. As an example right now I still enjoy cracking the odd box here & there so I'm currently having a break from putting a whole box of Timespiral Remastered into collector number order. However, once that's done, it only takes me about 15 minutes to add it all to my Deckbox inventory, then I can just plop it into a drawer and it's done. Those cards are available and easy to find whenever I want them!

I'm a strong proponent of Set/Collector Number order and, for me at least, no other option would work.

Edit to add: Since WOTC decided to start printing hundreds of alt-art cards and collector boosters, etc. I decided it was time to stop trying to collect one of every card in each set that gets released. I still buy all the commander precons and I still like to crack packs on supplementary sets, but I've given up trying to keep up with collecting everything because it was just getting out of hand in both money and storage space! It's both a bit sad and a bit of a relief not to have to try and keep up any more....

Hey all - I just got my full set of 5 C20 decks and wondered if anyone out there has a .csv to import the set rather than me going through and clicking them all? I've seen it for other sets in the past but had a quick search of the forums and couldn't find any!

Hey Hamish! Yes, I got those CSVs created and added. The stickied thread in the forums where I post them all is in the Site Discussion subforum. The thread is entitled [Resource] Precon / Sealed "Quick Add". I always post a new comment with the links to the CSVs as soon as I add them, so you can just go to the most recent comment to download CSVs. But you could also just bookmark this page: bit.ly/MTGprecons (capitalization matters with Bitly links). That's where I've collected every single CSV I've created.

Ah thank you so much! I don't know how long I looked and still couldn't find them somehow, but it might be because I was only searching in post titles.

Can't offer much advice about buying/trading via the site as I use it just for inventory, but figured I'd stop by and say hi smile

Thanks, as always!

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I am also seeing some small issues with the CMC on certain cards (e.g. the hybrid mana costs for Rampart Smasher) which is leading to incorrect calculations of mana curve and card colour breakdown.

I must say, this set must be a nightmare to add with all the new types of "split" cards and the multiple different printings of so many cards! Appreciate your work.

Ah, thanks meldon44. I had totally missed that despite my search, I'll have to give it a try and see how it goes! That might solve my problem.

I'll just add the feedback that it isn't quite ideal because it looks like you can have multiple tags on a card but it will still only show up in the "group" that corresponds to the first tag in the notes.

Thanks a lot!

I might be wrong (and I don't know how long ago you mean) but I've been using the site for ~3 years and in that time I think it's always defaulted to sort by name.

I do agree that having a checkbox or setting to choose your default sort column would be a nice feature though.

Hi and thanks for reading. I did a couple of forum searches before posting this (namely "custom category" and "custom categories") but nothing showed up so I wanted to post this here.

I love deckbox and I use it for my inventory and for brewing. I am a premium member and I love the ability to specify a printing of a card and mark decks as ideas vs built, etc. Please keep up the good work.

One thing that I have noticed when comparing deckbox to other sites is the inability to create custom categories for your cards in a deck. For example, when I am brewing I find it very useful to be able to group my cards not by "creature"/"sorcery"/etc., but by their function in the deck, e.g. "card draw"/"win condition"/"spot removal"/etc. Many other deck building sites allow you to switch between the regular type categories and custom categories, and some even allow you to use a system of tags for cards so that one card can be listed in more than one category.

Does this exist somewhere within deckbox that I have just missed? If not, I would really love to see this feature implemented as it would mean I not needing to keep separate copies of deck lists in a spreadsheet and/or on other sites just to keep track of these custom category counts.

Thanks again and for reading!

Hey, thanks for continuing to add features!

Just a question - is there a reason why you can't filter by "Commander" as a format? It's pretty much all I play.
Also, sorry if this has been asked, but related to this do you plan to add functionality to show partner commanders when a deck is tagged as commander format? At present you can only mark one card as your commander.

Thanks!

Commander is listed under "Variants" as opposed to formats, and that was not available as a filter for some reason. It is now!

As always, thank you!

Thanks, sebi - that's exactly what I had hoped would be the case!

Hi all,

Long time Basic user and about to initiate the upgrade to Premium for some of the extra features.

My question relates to what happens if you are a premium member, and you have used premium features (such as tagging decks as built, using the scratchpad, specifying printings within decks, etc) but then you cancel your premium membership and re-join later?

Do you lose the premium data when you re-subscribe or is it all there but you can't modify any of it while you are back being a basic user?

I ask because I go through phases of being able to afford things and not afford things, so my collecting of Magic often comes in waves, and I would love to be able to take advantage of the monthly subscription during the times I have money for Magic and Deckbox.

Thanks for the help.

Break3r - I like that idea too....  I'll take a look and see what is feasible with my limited scripting knowledge!

EDIT: So I have put something together (was easier than I first thought). It takes one Deckbox inventory export (.csv) and one commander name (from EDHREC) and then the output is a list of cards you own that feature on the page of the commander on EDHREC.

Is this the kind of thing you had in mind?

Yep, pretty much but it was fun to set myself a challenge and write it¡ smile

Hi everyone. I hope this is allowed but if not then I apologise and would ask a mod to remove my post.

I don't know how common this is but my friends and I try to open boosters and swap cards in order to own at least 1 of every card in each set as they get released. One thing we sometimes have trouble with is working out which cards we have duplicates of but are needed by our other friends. Currently we have to sit there with our piles of duplicates and physically go through them one card at a time to work this out, especially with newer sets that we don't know very well yet.

We all use deckbox for our inventory management (because it's easily the best site out there for this!) and so I wrote a short python script that will compare two exported Deckbox inventory .csv files to each other and output two more .csv files that lists possible trades.

Basically it says "Do I have a duplicate of this card? If yes, does my friend have 0 copies of this card? If yes to that as well, add it to the list of possible swaps". It then does the same thing the other way around and gives a second list of the cards your friend could trade to you.

Is this something that the community here would find useful? Is it worth me refining it a bit and putting it up for general use or are we abnormal in how we go about our collecting cards?

Thanks!

Hamish

Hi everyone, new user here and new to MTG generally.

Having bought a bunch of commons from ebay just to get me started, I was immediately faced with the problem I assume every collector faces:
How the hell do I organise it all?

That is when I found DeckBox and I am very glad!

Having put about half my cards into my DeckBox inventory, I realised that it might sometimes be useful to be able to have the same inventory offline, in the free software Magic Assistant. However, there was no way I was going to manually input all the same cards a second time.

I noticed DeckBox has an export to csv feature and to cut a long story short I have written a script that converts this .csv output into the xml format used by a collection in Magic Assistant. Unfortunately, because the exported csv doesn't include each card's unique id number I had to use (and heavily edit) a website scraper that gets this information directly from Gatherer.

However, after working on it for most of the day (I'm learning to program at the same time) it finally seems to work, and I'm happy with myself!

Only really posting on here to say that this exists and if anybody would like a copy of my script then please let me know in this thread or message me with your contact details.

NB. the script is written in python and is a bit rough around the edges, but it works if you put the files in the right place.

Cheers!
Hamish
