Tempo

Deck Overview & Archetype 🎯

Otterly Electrifying Tempo is a lightning-fast, high-synergy Izzet (Blue/Red) Tempo deck built around prowess triggers, tribal Otter synergies, and mana-discounted instant and sorcery spells. Rather than trading resources one-for-one like traditional control, this deck leverages efficient cost reducers and card advantage engines to build an insurmountable tempo lead. By combining cheap, high-impact creatures like the uncommon Stormcatch Mentor with explosive draw spells like the common Pearl of Wisdom and burst removal like the uncommon Rabid Gnaw, the deck consistently develops its board while clearing opposing blockers.

In competitive Constructed environments, tempo decks thrive against mid-speed strategies that spend early turns casting tapped lands or setup artifacts. Against aggressive decks, the deck can deploy early blockers, stabilize with efficient burn removal like Flame Lash, and outdraw the opponent. Against slower midrange or control builds, the deck presents immediate early clocks that demand answers, backed by the mythic rare powerhouse Bria, Riptide Rogue to grant evasion and turn any sequence of cheap cantrips into lethal combat swings.

Gameplan & Strategy 🎯

The primary game plan is to curve early creatures into rapid spell-velocity turns. Turn 2 is the deck's primary inflection point: deploying either Stormcatch Mentor for haste and immediate cost reduction, or Bellowing Crier to smooth land drops and filter the hand. On turn 3, the deck transitions into the active tempo phase. Because Stormcatch Mentor is an Otter that also discounts instant and sorcery spells, it provides a double-discount to Pearl of Wisdom, reducing its mana cost from {2}{U} down to a single {U}. This allows the pilot to cast a removal spell and a card-draw spell on the exact same turn while attacking with prowess-buffed creatures.

When operating from parity or ahead, the deck maintains pressure using Thieving Otter and Alania's Pathmaker to continuously generate card advantage. When behind, the deck uses instant-speed removal like Flame Lash to pick off key threats and Charmed Sleep to neutralize oversized monsters that cannot be burned down. Once the board is stabilized, Mind Spring or Alania, Divergent Storm provides endless late-game gas to overwhelm the opponent.

Win Conditions 🏆

The deck secures victory through several converging avenues:

Bria Prowess Alpha Strikes: The mythic rare Bria, Riptide Rogue is the primary finisher. By giving every other creature prowess and granting unblockability whenever a noncreature spell is cast, Bria can turn a modest board of small Otters into an unblockable, lethal swarm within a single turn.
Otter Swarm with Prowess Buffs: Multiple copies of Stormcatch Mentor combined with Thieving Otter and Alania's Pathmaker present a rapidly scaling clock. Chaining Pearl of Wisdom into Rabid Gnaw buffs attackers while blowing through potential blockers.
Direct Burn Finish: Four copies of the common instant Flame Lash can target any target. When an opponent stabilizes at low life behind a wall of blockers, chaining multiple copies of Flame Lash directly to the opponent's face easily closes out the game.
Cloned Bombs via Mockingbird: The rare Mockingbird acts as an adaptive threat. In the early game, it can enter for {1}{U} as a flying copy of Stormcatch Mentor to stack spell discounts and haste. In the late game, it can copy the opponent's best creature or an additional Thieving Otter to dominate the skies.

Key Card Analysis & Synergies 🔗

Understanding the card-by-card interactions is vital for piloting the deck at peak efficiency:

Stormcatch Mentor (Uncommon): The premier engine of the deck. As a 1/1 with haste and prowess for {U}{R}, it reduces the casting cost of all instant and sorcery spells by {1}. This single-handedly enables multi-spell turns on turns 3 and 4, turning clunky removal into hyper-efficient interaction.
Pearl of Wisdom (Common): A premier card draw engine. Normally costing {2}{U} to draw two cards, it discounts by {1} if you control an Otter. When paired with Stormcatch Mentor (which is both an Otter and discounts sorceries by {1}), Pearl of Wisdom costs a single {U} mana to draw two cards at sorcery speed.
Rabid Gnaw (Uncommon): A devastating combat and removal trick for {1}{R}. Because it is an instant, casting Rabid Gnaw triggers prowess on creatures like Stormcatch Mentor or Bria, Riptide Rogue before the spell resolves. For example, if you control Stormcatch Mentor (base 1/1) and 3 untapped lands, you spend {R} (discounted by Mentor from {1}{R}) to cast Rabid Gnaw. Prowess triggers first, putting Mentor at 2/2. Rabid Gnaw then gives Mentor +1/+0 (making it 3/2) and causes it to bite an opposing creature for 3 damage. You still have 2 lands untapped to cast Pearl of Wisdom for {U}, triggering prowess a second time to make Mentor a 4/3 attacker.
Bria, Riptide Rogue (Mythic Rare): A 3/3 for {2}{U}{R} that functions as a game-ending lord. It gives all other creatures prowess (which stacks if they already have prowess, meaning Stormcatch Mentor triggers prowess twice per spell). Additionally, every noncreature spell allows you to make a creature unblockable. Pairing this with Thieving Otter guarantees uninterrupted combat damage and consistent card draw.
Alania, Divergent Storm (Rare): A 3/5 Otter Wizard for {3}{U}{R}. While allowing an opponent to draw a card is a drawback, copying the first instant, sorcery, or Otter spell you cast each turn generates overwhelming value when copying spells like Flame Lash (dealing 8 damage total) or Alania's Pathmaker.
Mockingbird (Rare): A flexible {X}{U} flyer. For two mana ({1}{U}, where X=1), it enters as a copy of any 2-drop on the battlefield, retaining flying. Copying your own Stormcatch Mentor yields two cost reducers, dropping Flame Lash to just {1}{R} and Pearl of Wisdom to {U}.
Bellowing Crier (Common): A 2/1 Frog Advisor for {1}{U} that loots on entrance. It provides crucial early velocity, discarding excess lands to dig into action spells.
Mind Spring (Rare): A sorcery costing {X}{U}{U}. When cast late in the game, Stormcatch Mentor reduces the generic mana requirement by {1}, allowing you to draw X cards for {X-1}{U}{U}. It guarantees you never run out of gas in stalled games.

Mana Base & Mana Curve ⚡

The mana base consists of 24 lands, tailored to support a fast two-color curve. Four copies of the common dual land Swiftwater Cliffs provide color fixing for both {U} and {R} while granting incidental life gain to buffer aggressive matchups. The remaining land slots are split evenly between 10 Island and 10 Mountain.

This configuration yields 14 Blue sources and 14 Red sources. According to hypergeometric probability, 14 colored sources provides an 86%+ probability of having both colors available on turn 2, ensuring that Stormcatch Mentor ({U}{R}) can be deployed on curve. The curve is heavily concentrated at 2 mana (12 spells) and 3 mana (7 spells), ensuring that the deck consistently operates without mana bottlenecks.

Mulligan Guide 🤔

A winning hand with this deck must contain proactive early plays and balanced mana. Because the deck thrives on tempo, hands that lack action before turn 3 must be thrown back.

The Ideal Hand: Two lands (one producing Red, one producing Blue), Stormcatch Mentor, Rabid Gnaw, Pearl of Wisdom, and a 3-drop threat like Thieving Otter. This hand curves seamlessly from setup into card advantage and removal.
Keepable Reactive Hand: Three lands, Bellowing Crier, Flame Lash, and Charmed Sleep. While slower, Bellowing Crier digs for proactive threats while your removal stabilizes the board against aggressive opponents.
Hands to Mulligan: Hands with only one land, hands with four or more lands and no early card advantage, or hands that contain only 4- and 5-mana spells (such as hands clogged with multiple Flame Lash and Alania, Divergent Storm without 1- or 2-drops).

Game Plan by Phase ⏳

Early Game (Turns 1-3): On turn 1, lead with Swiftwater Cliffs to get your tapped land out of the way, or cast Mockingbird as a 1/1 flyer if no other early play exists. On turn 2, deploy Stormcatch Mentor or Bellowing Crier. On turn 3, use your mana reduction to double-spell: fire off Rabid Gnaw to clear the opponent's 2-drop, then follow up with a discounted Pearl of Wisdom for {U} to refill your hand.
Mid Game (Turns 4-7): Cast Bria, Riptide Rogue or Alania's Pathmaker. Leverage Bria's unblockable triggers to send Thieving Otter past ground blockers for guaranteed card draw. Use Flame Lash at instant speed during the opponent's turn to dismantle key attackers or disrupt their combat math.
Late Game (Turns 8+): If the game drags out, cast Mind Spring for X=4 or X=5 to draw a fresh grip of cards. Deploy Alania, Divergent Storm to duplicate high-impact removal spells, and execute an unblockable alpha strike with Bria, Riptide Rogue to close out the match.

Matchup Guide ⚔️

Against Fast Aggro: Your role is control in the opening turns. Do not race immediately. Prioritize casting Bellowing Crier as an early blocker and use Rabid Gnaw and Flame Lash to pick off key aggressive threats. Once their initial rush is blunted, Pearl of Wisdom and Mind Spring will quickly bury them in card advantage.
Against Midrange: This is the deck's best matchup. Midrange decks often tap out for single beefy threats on turns 3 through 5. Neutralize their biggest creature with Charmed Sleep or a high-powered Rabid Gnaw, then exploit their tapped-out turns with Bria, Riptide Rogue to swing for massive unblockable damage.
Against Control: Assume the role of the aggressor. Threaten their life total immediately with hasty Stormcatch Mentor hits. Avoid overcommitting all your cards into potential board wipes; instead, rely on Thieving Otter and Alania's Pathmaker to force them to answer your threats while holding Flame Lash to burn them out when their shields are down.

Strengths & Weaknesses ⚖️

Strengths:

Exceptional mana efficiency: Stormcatch Mentor and Otter tribal discounts enable multi-spell turns far earlier than opponents can manage.
Resilient card draw: With 4 Pearl of Wisdom, 4 Thieving Otter, 3 Alania's Pathmaker, and 2 Mind Spring, the deck rarely runs out of resources.
Evasion and reach: Bria, Riptide Rogue and Flame Lash provide reliable ways to finish games even through dense board stalls.

Weaknesses:

Vulnerability to cheap removal on key engines: If opponents consistently kill Stormcatch Mentor and Bria, Riptide Rogue on sight, the deck's velocity slows down. Mitigate this by baiting removal with Bellowing Crier and Thieving Otter before deploying your critical payoffs.
Board stall vulnerability without Bria: If Bria, Riptide Rogue is not drawn, ground creatures like Alania's Pathmaker can struggle against high-toughness blockers. Use Charmed Sleep strategically on the opponent's most formidable blocker to clear the path.
