Notes

With the recent preview of the new Temur-colored Sarkhan, many dragon-tribal players were lamenting that he would only fit into Scion, which made Zirilian, Karrthus, and other less-common tribal dragon commanders less attractive options. In response, I mentioned to several people that I helm an Intet Dragonstorm deck that is a lot of fun to play and since then I've received about a dozen PMs asking me for a list. I figured it would be best to drop it into a thread and get a conversation going, rather than starting twenty 1:1 conversations via PM. So here we go:

The List

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/14-08-14-intet-dragonstorm/

Deck Themes

• Dragon Tribal - Because I had seen Jund Dragons, and 5c Dragons, and Mono-Red Dragons, but until I build Intet, I had never seen RUG Dragons and I thought it would be a lot of fun to have a unique deck with an oddball theme but still let me play tribal.

• Dragonstorm - My favorite method of victory is to play Dragonstorm for free off of Intet's ability and vomit a bunch of dragon's into play.

• Flash - Cards such as Leyline of Anticipation, Vedalkin Orrery, and Prophet of Kruphix allow me to cast cards out of my hand on other player's turns. This gives my dragon's a kind of pseudo-haste, allow me to protect Intet, and lets me cast more cards off Intet, even if she gets targeted with removal.

• Ramp - Dragons cost a lot of mana to cast and their abilities tend to be pretty expensive to activate as well. So its important to have both mana rocks and some ramp spells to make sure you hit critical mana in every single game.

Deck Limitations

• This deck was not made to be tier 1 competitive. I think it definitely falls into the 75% Commander Deck area. It can win some games with great effect, but its not usually going to outrun a speedy voltron deck or put the breaks on a combo deck. It relies on the table balancing the rest of the threats out to do its thing.

• It's missing some top tier temur-colored cards because I wanted to include more dragons, rather than slam stonger cards into the deck. You could definitely put in more control cards or stronger creatures than some of my included dragons to make the deck more aggressive.

• The mana base is a little silly right now because I've been busy and haven't had time to go acquire all the cards I need to make it perfect. It's missing some shocks/duals that you could include to make it more consistent. It also runs snow lands because I couldn't help but include Rimescale Dragon. So you may miss piggy-backing some mana-doubling abilities off other players.

• The deck is a little light on removal. If I wanted it to be stronger, I could cut a few non-essential dragons and support cards and run heavier removal.

• Ulimately, you could probably build a very similar deck with Animar or Maelstrom Wanderer as the commander, cut down on the flash theme, and have a stronger "dragon tribal" deck. But then you wouldn't have a dragon at the helm of your dragon deck and that just feels wrong, doesn't it?

How to Play

This deck is pretty simple to play. Mulligan away big beaters that you can live without because you'll see lots of them. You really want lands, ramp, removal and draw spells in your opening hand. Early game is just ramping up and getting a big beater out as a deterrent as soon as possible. Helps if you can get a card advantage engine like Niv Mizzet, Dracogenius, Rhystic Study, or Staff of Nin out early too.

In the mid-game, you want to get Intet online and protected. Hold up UU for that counterspell or slap Bear Umbra on her and start putting cards into her exile pile. If you feel threatened, don't be afraid to cast her spells, even if you haven't stacked Dragonstorm on top. And make sure to remember that if you've put a land in her exile pile, play the land from there before playing any from you hand.

Late game is all about getting an army of dragons online and applying pressure to the big threats at the table. Kill the combo player and leave up a fat blocker to intimidate the voltron player. Keep looking for that jank that is going to win the game if the army isn't working. My favorite victories have been things like kicking a Rite of Replication on a Spawn of Thraxes to deal 30+ damage to the table, or killing my own Keiga with Niv Mizzet pings to steal a Gisela and slap down the table with her. This deck isn't built to be the most potent, but it is build to win in fun ways.

Feedback?

Happy to hear your thoughts on my janky dragonstorm deck. If you wnted to make it more competitive, let me know how. If you'd rather I make it even more dragon-themed than ever before, tell me what cards I should replace to pull that off. I've had a lot of fun surprising people with this deck and now that I feel like I fully own it and I just KNOW that more dragon tribal decks are on their way, I'm happy to share it with you and see it further developed by the community.

I'll have some thoughts on new DTK cards in the comments below!
