Notes

Right now, the Modern format is all about who can come out of the gates fastest. Whether you’re using Eldrazi Temple, Mox Opal, or Birds of Paradise as the engine to power out your hay-makers, what’s important is making sure your powerful cards hit the board before your opponents’. To that end, _XuXa_ has found a powerful combination of cards with the power to deny many of the top decks in Modern the ability to set up. Let’s take a look:

This deck is all about speed. The Arbor Elf/Utopia Sprawl engine allows you to have access to four mana on turn two, at which point you can do all manner of busted things. The idea behind this deck is to maximize the number of 1-mana accelerants so you can power out early land destruction spells. Whether you’re casting Blood Moon to lock Eldrazi out of their colorless mana sources, Stone Rain to kill Celestial Colonnades and Inkmoth Nexus, or Mwonvuli Acid-Moss to pull even further ahead, you just want to keep your opponent behind on resources before you start casting giant monsters.
As far as threats go, Inferno Titan and Stormbreath Dragon are fantastic choices in this format. Inferno Titan is positively absurd against Melira, Elves, and Affinity, functioning as both a threat and multiple removal spells. Stormbreath Dragon, on the other hand, is a great threat against the format since Path to Exile has become the premier removal spell against Eldrazi. Additionally, the deck has access to Batterskull to gum up the ground against aggressive decks and Thrun, the Last Troll, which is great at holding the fort against Thought-Knot Seers and Reality Smashers.
Given the baseline plan is to get ahead on mana and stay ahead through the course of the game, you might think fast decks like Affinity might be a bad matchup. Enter Bonfire of the Damned. Even if you can’t miracle Bonfire, the amount of acceleration in this deck makes it a completely reasonable card to hard cast. The upside is Bonfire will sweep away all of the opposing accelerants and small attackers while leaving your Arbor Elf intact, which is an enormously powerful position to be in.
All told, this deck has a shocking amount of flexibility. Cards like Godo, Bandit Warlord and Garruk Wildspeaker can give the deck more game against control and midrange decks. Lightning Bolts and other spot removal can help against Eldrazi and other aggressive decks. As long as the core game plan of denying your opponent mana and casting giant monsters is reasonable against the format, this seems like a fantastic choice for your next Modern event.
