Yeah, I had the same general experience with Azorius.  Nothing was terrible, it all did its job.  But detaining a few creatures for a couple turns just isn't enough.
Of course, I say that knowing that it can work out very well, because the person who won our Pre-release was playing Azorius as well.

I was pretty happy though when I stalled out a game long enough to use Psychic Spiral for the mill kill.

Did Gutter Grime ever have an impact?

I wasn't ever able to get it out once, because it was never relevant enough.  By the time I had that much mana lying around, I didn't have enough creatures out to make it worth while because they were busy chump blocking and being sacrificed.  The Exquisite Blood at least came in handy a bit with only a single Blood Artist, and Feed the Pack was able to essentially double the number of blockers I had lying around, but Gutter Grime just doesn't have an immediate impact and requires me to keep feeding it more and more creatures to be useful.

Interesting.  Perhaps it would make sense to throw in Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, Ghoultree, Boneyard Wurm, or something like that given the number of creatures in the graveyard?

I would say that is probably an amazing idea, actually.  And possibly Jarad's Orders as well, because that gets you the best of both worlds (especially since you can choose to only find one and it goes right to your hand).

Best of luck.  I head off to my Pre-release in 12 hours!

I finally got to play this tonight!  And sadly, it bombed pretty hard.  Went 1-3.
If and when you can get the big enchantments out (Exquisite Blood, Feed the Pack, etc.) then they can be great.  The problem is that the current meta, at least where I'm at is just way too incredibly fast.

The main problem is that there just weren't enough creatures staying in my hand, especially when I'm using them as an extra resource to draw cards and kill things.  Blood Artist + Barter in Blood definitely stole the show though.  Any time that you can get a couple artists out and then essentially kill four creatures, that is at least a 16 point life swing in your favor.  I cleared more than a couple boards with back to back Barter in Bloods, but that also left my board empty.

The problem wasn't quite as much of the fact that there aren't enough creatures in the deck, but rather that they all cost so little and are rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things, that you end up committing a lot of them to the board very quickly.  And when you do that, and then sacrifice a bunch, you end up with an empty hand and just top decking the rest of the game.  With all the extra life gained from the Blood Artists, will definitely want to include a full set of Sign in Bloods.  For the most part, the enchantments are definitely cool when they hit the field, and allowed me stall for a few more turns whenever they did, but they should probably be dropped almost entirely for something that will help out more immediately and more readily.

I am gonna have to say though, that I sided in a couple Gnaw to the Bones and they rock the house in this deck.  Sack a bunch of creatures to get a life swing from the Blood Artists, and then gain twice that much life, and then do it again with flashback.  Even if you have only 4 creatures in the graveyard, that is 16 life for 6 mana.  Will probably be main boarding those from now on because you really need that extra stall factor here.

Champion of Lambholt was pretty useless, because you'd just end up wanting to sacrifice it anyway.  Will definitely drop those.  Craterhoof Behemoth was much the same way; you never had enough creatures on the board and enough mana to make it worth while.

Lastly, definitely need a bunch of enchantment and artifact hate in the sideboard, possibly main.  Oblivion Ring shuts down your sacs.  Witchbane Orb shuts down Blood Artist.  And I'm sure there is plenty more where that came from.

Gaining from sacrificing and life gain are really the stars of the deck, and we definitely need to play more on that fact.  A lot more.

I officially signed up tonight.  Went with Azorius.

Literally, almost everybody is going with Golgari or Rakdos at my LGS, and a few for Izzet.
Selesnya was entirely blank.  Nobody.  At first I went with Selesnya, just to get somebody to play it and go against the grain, but I changed my mind later on in the night.

Have a Promo Lingering Souls up now as well, if that interests anybody.

Looks like you can probably expect a Guildmage, a Keyrune, and maybe a Legendary in your guild pack among other things (based on the Achievement Cards).

They've already stated what is in every pack.  The only things that are guaranteed are the guild promo card and the guild gate.
Besides that you get any 10 commons from your guild colors, any 3 uncommons from your guild colors and 1 rare from your guild colors.
Note that I didn't say mythic rare there.  You can only get a rare in that slot, with one exception, you also have a chance to get your guild leader.

You can see all of the possibilities here.

I'm still having issues deciding what I like most.  My gut tells me Golgari, just because I've always loved the G/B combo.

I also really want to make Azorius Flicker Detain work.  Azorius Justiciar/Lyev Skyknight/etc. + Restoration Angel/Cloudshift/Ghostly Flicker/etc.

And Izzet is just begging me to try and break it in some way..... Especially because I love the Overload mechanic.

I think everybody is underestimating Rakdos too much, so I also really want to build that for some crazy aggro.

So yeah, I'm torn and can't really pick a favorite.......

I'm definitely looking forward to the Prerelease tomorrow.  I think Wizards did a great job balancing all of the different guilds (for limited at least), so I'm having a difficult time choosing which guild I actually want to choose..... I guess I'll have to decide by tomorrow, or maybe tonight at FNM.

Good luck to everybody that is able to make it!

Bump.  Just pulled a second Liliana of the Veil, so I have two up for trade now.

I'm a big fan of Jarad as well, because as long as you have seven mana sitting around he can easily be a surprise win.

For example, one amazing play would be to just mill yourself into oblivion to get 7+ creatures into the graveyard (including Jarad) via Jarad's Orders, Mulch, Tracker's Instincts, etc.  Play a Ghoultree for G from one Forest.  Float a black mana from a swamp, and sacrifice the Swamp and Forest to return Jarad from your graveyard to your hand.  Throw down Jarad and activate his ability to sac the Ghoultree to have your opponent lose 10 life.

That is 8 mana to go from no creatures on the battlefield, and possibly only one card in hard (Ghoultree) to an instant win (assuming your opponent is already at 10 or less life, obviously).

I think stuff like that could be really fun to build around.

I have a bunch of big cards that I probably won't be using any time soon, looking to get some shocks and other such things to wrap up a possible G/B Zombies list, as well as a bunch of other cards to open up some other options in the future.

Here are the big cards I have up for trade at the moment in Standard:
2x Liliana of the Veil
1x Cavern of Souls
1x Restoration Angel
1x Akroma's Memorial
1x FNM Promo Lingering Souls
1x Foil Mutilate
And more in my Tradelist

I also have a bunch of non-standard cards that I'd be willing to part with...
1x Ethersworn Canonist
1x Debtors' knell
1x Toxin Sliver
2x Goblin Sharpshooter
1x Eternal Witness
And, again, a whole bunch more.

What I'm looking for at the moment is mainly.....
4x Overgrown Tomb
4x Geist of Saint Traft
But I love digging for random stuff for EDH as well.  And I'm always willing to dig through a tradelist to fill in gaps.

Thanks!

We still have to find a way to enable you to see this information (all other aethersnipes you have in your inv/tradelist) and edit your traded counts quickly to show that you actually want to trade a Lorwyn Aethersnipe.

Just something I threw together quickly, so it isn't overly pretty or anything, but I think it gets the point across.  For each card you can click on some type of icon, just like the Inventory, to go edit the trade details for each different version of the card that you own.  In this case I just used Pacifism (all of the actual numbers are from my inventory).  Then you only need to show the ones in the main table that are actually included in the trade, but you can easily go in and swap them out for different ones if you choose to do so.
Edit: Obviously it could show separate entries for foil vs non-foil, a different languages and such as well, just like the other table, I just didn't include those.

Ghostly Possession is a great card to lock down their creatures from dealing any damage to you, and pairs amazingly well with Palisade Giant as well.

M13 C/U Foils that I have:

Zombie Goliath
Harbor Bandit
Safe Passage
Divine Verdict
Kindled Fury
Krenko's Command
Arctic Aven

I also have a Cat and Goat Token.

Didn't know you needed them, otherwise we could have included them in our current trade smile

I haven't had to fill out a customs form ever, nor do I have to drive a long way to get to the post office.  But the fact of the matter does remain that 1) shipping is most definitely more expensive, 2) things can get caught up in customs for up to two months (seen it happen personally) and 3) there is basically no way to track your shipment unless you want to pay upwards of $16.

I, myself, have done a few trades to Canada without any issues thus far (one being with you, I do believe), but I also know that I've been screwed over by people before claiming that "cards never arrived" or other such things, and in cases like that 1) I'd like to have tracking available when shipping more expensive cards, so they have no excuses and 2) If something does happen to go wrong, not have to pay even more for shipping again to ship back cards because mine "never arrived".

So yes, there is some hassle to the matter.  For some it isn't a huge deal, especially those shipping generally smaller trades.  For me, I find a little anxiety wrapping up $40 in cards in a regular envelope and a couple stamps and sending it to somewhere that I have literally no way of knowing if/when it will ever get there.  And, personally, I take a little offense to your statement about us "silly confused Americans", making it sound like we're an entirely incompetent group who can't ship "to *gasp* another country", when, in fact, it is probably more along the lines that we don't want to ship to Canada because the increased risk, additional shipping cost and possible time delays are not worth it to us.

lol, yeah, I wish most people noticed that fact.  Whenever I talk to people on Xbox Live or anything they almost always say "Perimeter".... neutral

Yep, same here.  I think there's actually quite a few of us on here, because we have programming discussions in the Site Feedback forum every once in a while. big_smile

I should probably point out also that my wishlist states which cards I want in Revised, and which ones I want in Unlimited. It's kind of a pain in the rear that deckbox doesn't take editions into account, but it is what it is smile

Pretty sure that the new release (that is due out at the end of the month) will take all of that into account.

Sending a trade with a bunch of non-revised/unlimited stuff, then I'll have to do a lot of searching to see if I also have some of the revised stuff as well.

Well then, very nice!  Wizards decided to be quick this time around.  I'm guessing that sebi still has to trigger a regathering of the data, which may just happen automatically at night.

Sent another trade.  Not sure if everything on your wishlist is specifically for your cube or not, or if it matters, so I just added a few things.

Are planeswalkers common in EDH decks?

I know lots of people who have Planeswalkers in their decks, and some that don't.  It's all personal preference as well as generally what your meta prefers.
