When I was trading frequently, almost every trade went out with tracking (I print shipping labels through PayPal, and delivery confirmation is included). Yes, I even did it for some trades that were less than the cost of the postage (for me, the cost of driving to a local game store would have cost more than postage).  I've only shipped via first class mail  (without tracking) once or twice; the most value I've ever sent that way was about $3.00. To me, anything higher than that would be shipped in a package with tracking (just because I didn't want to risk having to send the cards again).

The rules for the site make it clear that it is each SENDER's responsibility to ensure delivery.  Tracking methods like delivery confirmation provide that, and are relatively cheap (especially if you print your own labels through services like PayPal, which is significantly cheaper than paying for postage and delivery confirmation via the US Postal Service Post Office sites). If you want to protect yourself from the risk of non-delivery (or claims of non-delivery), just use delivery confirmation on each trade.

I'm writing from the perspective of someone who was actively trading every week, but then life happened. Now I may be logged in regularly, but only to manage my inventory. I kept intending to trade, but have had limited time and even less money. That's why I took a break from trading last summer, then tried limited trading for a number of months. Most recently, I've switched to local trades only.  Maybe someday I can get back to regular trading. That's one example of why some people are seen as active by their last logged on time, but they are not actively trading.

I've requested a feature to let members set their trade status (beyond local or country/region specific preferences), but it has not made Sebi's to-do list. I think every member should have the option to check a box that says "not trading right now" or "on vacation".  We need some sort of control of our status so as to not to frustrate the active traders like you. And, hey, I get it--I had the same frustration during my first year or so around here.

For me, I have two kids that have rare genetic disorders, and now I've had two of my sons diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome.  My wife and I have gone through the financial wringer in the past 15 months. Life just sucks sometimes. Perhaps someday I will be able to get back to regularly trading by mail, but for now I'm just an occasional poster in the discussion forum and am working to keep my inventory current.  I hear your frustration, but try to feel a bit for the other guy (or gal). Someday you might find yourself in a place where you need to take a break, by choice or necessity.

Best of luck to you. I hope you can establish some good trade partnerships, and that the number of active members you find will exceed those like me who would love to be active, but just can't be right now.

Cheers!

Remember that some members are interested only in local trades. Others won't trade with new members (i.e., those in with below a certain trade score).  Some may have other things going on in life that are keep them away from trading for a time. [That's been my story--I was trading a lot last year and planned to take the summer off, but haven't completed a single trade since then due to other things going on.]  Others will only trade with folks in their own country, or those referred to them by friends.

Overall, don't sweat it.  Propose some trades, and give folks time to reply (not everyone check this site daily). You'll find some trade partners soon enough.

Good luck, and happy trading!

Welcome.  I'm assuming you want to play in Standard format events that use the current sets.

While you provided some good details in your original post, perhaps the best starting point would be for you to list three to five cards you'd really like to use in your deck.  You have a few full playsets (4x a card) in blue/white, but otherwise have a lot of one-of cards.  You noted you don't have a lot of funds, so buying into a deck isn't an option, but do you have the means to purchase (or trade for) any additional cards? All would help the community know how to best approach your request.

As an example:

I really want to build a deck using Lyev Skyknight,
Doorkeeper, and Stealer of Secrets.

My goal would be to play Azorius control, with some mill.

With all the enchantments in the current block, I'll probably
want Keening Apparition in my sideboard.

I can't really spend anything more on the deck right now, but want
to identify some cards for my wishlist, so feel free to recommend a
few premium cards I could substitute in at a later date.

I hope this helps.  I'll look forward to your next post.

Spoiler view is not showing my inventory counts (at least for the Born of the Gods set--have not tested others).

Example: Drown in Sorrow. I have one. The count in spoiler view shows zero.

I started out from the Card Database, and filtered by Edition printed in.

It's hard to answer that question without knowing more about how you like to play.  I know many who run faster Infect decks with Glistener Elf and Mutagenic Growth. Tell us more about how you envision it playing out, and how you want to win, and you might get more feedback.

I don't have an authoritative answer for you, but I'd guess it is a way for them to track legitimate packs (i.e., like a serial number). You have the option of sending in packs or cards if you have problems with them.  Perhaps they are getting too many such requests and want to start better tracking of packs to assess specific lots that have problems.

Yep, sorting by card count in the main card database, not just in your inventory would be a nice feature to have back. I used it quite often to see what cards I was missing from a set.

Same here. I also used to click into the Wishlist column to directly edit what I needed (after viewing the card database sorted by count).  I'd really love to see both aspects return,

Thanks, Sebi! What a pleasant surprise to check in during a trade to find foil prices.  Merry Christmas!

Helios52 wrote:

Something I noticed that sorting by price is incorrect with the new foil prices. The card is listed according to the price of the non foil version opposed to what is given for the foil price.

This one is addressed in one of Sebi's post's above.  He's aware of the bug, and acknowledges that he needs to fix it.

Phantom Warrior was a Rare in the Portal and Starter sets. That's why it shows up under that filter.

It's a known issue, but it comes from the API being used to pull the card data.  I'm not sure if Sebi could add further logic to fix that issue (it happens for any card that had a different rarity across different sets). He'll need to address that issue, but is currently tied up getting the long-expected trade interface upgrade finished.

It was a feature we had that was lost in the update back in December '12 or January '13.  It is slated to return with the next release.  I believe the entire community is waiting on this one.

Yeah, like mrturk1001 said, there is only one picture on here for all the versions.

I have been looking for a Chronicles edition of Urza's Power Plant for some time now which has the bug on it. Whenever I see that someone has a Chronicles edition of a Power Plant I just add it to the trade and then I message them to ask them which art work is on the card. If it's not the right one I delete it from the trade. Sometimes the other person will describe it and sometimes they will send me a link to a googled picture of the one that they have. ..... So far no one has the picture I need. It's a bit of a stumbling block when it comes to trying to find the right person to trade with for the one you want, but I am hopeful that I will get the version I need one day.

You might find better results if you post in some of the trade forums, detailing the card(s) you are seeking.  You can also add a note to your profile.

When I've been trying to get (or move) specific cards, I've found that more productive than sending out 30 different trade inquiries.

Tie-ins to other cultural refernces/themes can make tokens desirable, too. I saw a guy with an altered Doomed Traveler that had Obi Wan Kenobi on it.  He had spirit tokens that were the Obi Wan Force ghost.

Ideas:
For soldier tokens, the guy from the cover of 300.
For boar tokens, Wilbur the pig from Charlotte's Web.
Etc.

Are there any cool Walking Dead trading cards that would make for good zombie tokens?

I'm going to be in Arlington, VA next week (September 15-21, 2013) on business, and would be glad to connect for a few games any evening Sunday through Thursday.  Also looking for any recommended game stores near the keybridge area.  Let me know if you will be in the area and are game.

This has been reported by many.  Sebi will need to chime in to advise as to if/when this will be addressed.

I'm also not sure what you mean by game setup being different. Other than the prep, everyone still gets 3 15 card boosters and drafts the same.

I wasn't sure if anything else about the draft process was different. You answered it for me. Thanks.

I've  been into Wizard's Tower lately.  I'd like to see you take that one on.

It will be up to Sebi to decide whether or not this feature is considered.  The community is still waiting on a major overhaul of the trade interface.  My guess is that we'll next see an update around year end (over the holidays), as that's been the time of year he typically gets out the significant updates.

Only Sebi will know if that is even possible.  It is likely a limitation of the Application Programming Interface (API) or data dictionary from which this site pulls its information.

Since WotC announced the Wizard's Tower casual format, my family and friends have been playing it every week.  I'd like to know if anyone else is playing, and what you in the format and have any questions, go ahead and ask them here.  I'm no expert, but I'm sure the community can help out.  If you have any tips or best practices from your experiences, post them here, too. If particularly responses seem valuable to the community, I'll add them to this original post.

For those unfamiliar with the format, you can read about it here: Wizard's Tower: A Magic Format

WIZARD'S TOWER TIPS

- Constructing the Tower -
You have two options: Buy a Fat Pack or buy Boosters (singles, or as a box). Each has benefits and drawbacks.

Fat Pack: A Fat Packgives you everything you need to play Wizard's Tower right away.  The mix of land and packs (9) are all you need.  The additional materials (the box, the Player's guide, the Spin Down Life Counter, and the small boxes all can be used as prizes.  Splitting the cost is simple.  Deciding who gets to keep the packs can be challenging with any number of players other than three.

Boosters: Buying boosters (nine of them) is slightly cheaper than buying a fat pack ($36 vs. $40, using MSRP), but you need to provide 80 basic land (16 of each).  If you can get boosters for less from your LGS or by going in on a booster box, you save even more.

- Shuffling -
Shuffling 215 cards can be a challenge.  Try group shuffling to make things easier. Split the cards evenly amongst all players.  Ask them to shuffle the piles they were given.  Then, each player passes half of the cards to their left.  Repeat this two or three times. Then, pass piles across or to the right (your option). Do it that way two or three times.  When done, stack all the cards and you have a shuffled library.

- Prevent Library Tipping -
If you use those sleeves that have that little silver logo spot (you know the brand), they tend to tip if using new sleeves in a tall stack.  If a tipping stack is a problem, just put the top forty or so cards out for the library. Leave the rest nearby in one or more piles (as necessary), and just keep refreshing the active library (the top of the library) as needed.  Effects that let players search the library still let them search the entire library (all the stacks).  Similarly, when the library needs to get shuffled, it's the entire library.

- Life Total -
The official life total is that for multiplayer free-for-all rules (20 life).  This works well if you want to keep games short (typically under one hour).  In my house, we don't mind playing a bit longer.  Thirty life made the games drag on pretty long.  We've found that 25 is a decent starting total (at least under the M14 set).  We have found that different sets (the cards in those sets) can significantly impact play time (e.g., Jace, Memory Adept {mill}, Elixir or Immortality {life gain and shuffle the graveyard back into the library}).

- Modifying the Tower Size -
While the official rules for the Wizard's Tower format call for nine packs, as a casual format you can adopt some "house rules" for kitchen table play, so long as all players are aware of them before you begin.  If playing with two (2) or five (5) players, we add a tenth booster pack to make dividing the cards easier when we are done. This brings the library size up too 230 cards.  Since most boosters add a basic land to the pool, the extra pack seems to have no ill effect on game play.

WIZARD'S TOWER Q&A

Q) We split the cost of the cards for the tower. How do we decide who gets to keep what?
A) There are a number of ways you can split the ownership of the cards in a tower.  The following are some suggestions, but you may divide things any way you and your co-contributors find appropriate. Some require you to agree to how costs are split before you play. The following are presented as options, in no particular order:

  • Before play, stamp or mark the cards contributed by each player. For the collector, this is the least desirable option.  It may be possible to mark the cards by using Post-It flags or scarps of paper in the card sleeves.

  • Before play, list the contents of each pack contributed by each player.  After play, each player gathers the cards that match his/her list.

  • After play, remove all the basic land (except foils), shuffle the remaining cards, and deal them out to each player until all area gone.  Once you get to the point where there are less cards than players, give the remaining cards to the person who won.

  • After play, remove all the basic land (except foils). Separate the remaining cards into piles based on rarity: common, uncommon, and rare/mythic (as one group). Then, deal each rarity to each player.  When you get to the point where there are less cards in the common and uncommon rarities than there are players, give the remaining cards to the person who won.  Do the same for the rare/mythic rare pile.  When you get to the point where there are less rares/mythics than there are players, give the remaining cards to the winner. If playing with five players, there will be four rares/mythic rares left.  In that case, distribute them to the top three players: two for first place, and one each for second and third place.

  • Before the game, each person who helped pay for the tower provides sleeves (of a distinct  color/design) enough to sleeve their share of the tower [2 players = 108; 3 players = 72; 4 players = 54; 5 players = 43]. When playing with three players, the packs split evenly.  For any other number of players, either some players will need to pay for (and sleeve) multiple packs, or the remaining packs can be made part of the prize pool.  If made part of the prize pool, they still need to be sleeved, but the cards can be "marked" using Post-It flags, or tiny pieces of paper in the sleeve with the card (typically on the back side). Alternately, prize packs could be sleeved with yet another color of sleeves (though this makes counting uncommons and rares easier).

  • If you plan to play tower regularly, you might want to invest in nine (9) different sets of sleeves, sleeving one pack and sixteen randomized land in each set of sleeves. After play, use dice or another random method to assign ownership according to each player's contribution. If playing with three players, the packs will split evenly.  For any other number of players, the remaining pack(s) can be assigned to the prize pool using the same random selection process.

  • Agree to play tower multiple times, matching the number of players.  Each player takes a turn buying the fat pack or supplying the boosters and land required for the Tower.

  • Split all costs evenly, and award the boosters to the winners [2 players = 5/4; 3 players = 4/3/2; 4 players = 4/3/1/1; 5 players = 4/2/1/1/1]

Q) Can I play my tower more than once with a set of cards, or do I need to buy new cards each time?
A) Absolutely! I look at the Wizard's Tower format as the UNO-fication of Magic: the Gathering (referring to the popular card game, UNO, that uses the same deck every time you play). It's a great way to introduce people to the game.  Theoretically, it's highly unlikely that any two games from the same Tower will be very similar.  We often play tower multiple times with the same batch of cards.

If cube allows you to draft simulated packs, why wouldn't one want to randomize the cards by rarity? Typical packs have one rare or mythic, three uncommons (is it?), and the balance commons.  Would it make sense to distribute cards in simulated packs with that breakdown? Is that too tough to do in cube?

Note: I am not a cube player, but I am interested in playing.  If the game setup and play is very different from a normal draft, please enlighten me.
