Notes

3-0. 6 person pod, and only played against others in the pod. A good number of beginners were present, though I was seated next to the other most experience player (who'd apparently won a real tournament in this sealed/draft format back when it came out). Pack 1 Pick 1 was Conclave Cavalier - 2 colors, but such a strong bomb. I was rewarded by continuing to get Selesnya colored cards, though the person to my right ended up being in Golgari so green may have been cut off on Pack 2, but I didn't notice. There were a lot of superb Izzet cards being passed around - including a late Lava Coil which I hate drafted - and some great Dimir cards as well, and nobody ended up being in Izzet. (Looking at my past GRN drafts - the first format I ever played Limited in when I returned to the game in 2018 - it looks like I never drafted a straight Izzet deck, only drafting a Grixis deck in my final draft at the time). I ended the draft with what I considered to be a very strong and midrange deck.

Game 1 was against a brand new player in Dimir (1st time drafter, 2nd time player only having played Commander before). I was happy to show him the ropes of how to play, but took the 2-0 easily. Even though it wasn't a challenging matchup, it was gratifying to teach someone the game.

Game 2 was against a 1st time drafter, but long time Commander player, in Golgari. In one of the games they misplayed by attacking with the (discounted) Golgari 9 mana 6/6 when I had a huge board, so I was able to either kill them on the backswing or get them so low that it didn't matter. I took that match 2-0 as well.

The final match was against the experienced player, who drafted 5-color Gates - definitely the most fun deck at the table, and a worthy matchup. I won game 1 by doing classic curving out and deploying my Convoke threats with relative ease. Game 2 they won, using the uncommon Gates equipment payoff (giving Vigilance and Menace and +1/+0 for each gate to equipped creature) to take out my blockers and reduce me to 0 in combination with the 2-mana black surveil drain creature. I realized that if I wanted to take game 3, I'd need to lean into the aggressive nature of my deck, so I swapped out a Centaur Peacemaker for either Flight of the Equenauts or Vigorspore Wurm as a threat I could deploy versus something to increase both our life totals (I forget which). Then during game 3 they got out 2 of the 3-mana blue enchantments for drawing for each gate played, but I deployed a ton of threats to the board, curving out and getting a Siege Wurm out (which was an all-star during all my games, either one or both of them - I never actually played my other high-end threats). To win, had about 5 or 6 creatures out, attacked with Siege wurm and a buffed Ledev Champion (at 5/5) into 2 creatures and 14 life, with one green mana open and a Might of the Masses in hand. They decided not to block, which proved fatal, as my pump spell took my damage to over 14 in that one swing. They had removal in hand, so I was correct to be aggressive. It was a really fun match against a highly skilled opponent.

Extremely fun and happy to take the 3-0!
