I'm torn about the number of GSZs and GSZ targets in the deck. I like that GSZ is acceleration (Dryad Arbor), protection (Xantid Swarm, Sylvan Safekeeper), or a quasi-card advantage engine/combo piece tutor (Wood Sage). On the other hand, all of the one-of tutor targets make for really bad hands if drawn all at once. Should probably narrow it back down to 3x GSZs and 3 GSZ targets... it's just deciding which ones.
I like the Ensnaring Bridges that were in here, too. With Abrupt Decay seemingly on the decline in the advent of the TNN meta, Ensnaring Bridge is a lot better again. But is is better than just accelerating the combo and protecting it better?
Had some bad beats with this deck this weekend playing against Erik and Silas. Granted, I wasn't playing even close to optimally, and Silas drew turn one or turn two kills with Tin Fins all but one of the games we played. Erik suggested 4x Brainstorm and I like that idea so I'm trying that in place of 2x Meddling MAge 2x Azorius Signet main. I also swtiched one Lotus Petal over to the fourth Conjurer's Bauble, since I think Lotus Petal is now my least favorite card in the main.
Any thoughts, .dk?
That actually looks pretty impressive... Singleton worldly tutor seems weird though. Think you might want to consider a pithing needle in there somewhere if you're running artificer's intuition and trinket mage though.
Yeah, the 1 Worldly Tutor does look weird, but it's the best I could think of for Auriok Salvagers #8. The "top of library" thing has been a non-issue in terms of tempo due to Conjurer's Bauble and flipping Top. Also, if it searches up Trinket Mage, that makes it card advantage parity. If anything, maybe there should be more Worldly Tutors. I played a bunch against Miracles with RiP and Counterbalance last night and wanted enchantment removal to bring in, so I think I need to make room for more War Priest of Thune. It happens to also good against OmniTell. In what matchup do you think this deck would want the Pithing Needle?
Some BUG decks seem like they could be a bit of a problem. Liliana seems like she could pose a problem with both her +1 and -2.
And actually - it looks like Lab Maniac is your win-con. What are you decking yourself with? Don't see any spellbombs?
Conjurer's Bauble is the "draw your deck" card, and also functions against Extirpate/Surgical Extraction. Against Liliana, you just have to go off on the same turn you cast Auriok Salvagers. Scavenging Ooze is pretty bad... that may warrant the Needle. It can be blown up by Engineered Explosives, but that costs a lot more mana. However, Explosives can't be blown up by Qasali Pridemage, a frequent companion of Scavening Ooze. Hmm. Oh and there is always Krark-Clan Shaman to take care of annoying creatures like Ooze, Revoker, Thalia, etc.
Doesn't Bauble need a target in the graveyard to resolve the ability though? Maybe I don't understand well enough.
That makes sense about Ooze and such though. Hadn't really thought about it that way, although I still think Liliana's discard ability could pose a problem though, especially coupled with Ooze or Deathrite to remove a discarded Salvagers. But to your point, maybe Baulble gives you enough protection there?
/edit: oh, I'm an idiot. I didn't read Bauble close enough like 8 times.
Building this wishboard is seriously challenging, very tight on slots. Here are some thoughts (numbered to indicate my picks for quantity and importance towards the 15)
-Combo Pieces-
1. Auriok Salvagers – combo engine
2. Laboratory Maniac – win condition
3. Trinket Mage – finds missing combo pieces (and allows you to win when you have LED infinite loop + Living Wish but no Conjurer's Bauble)
(Storm Entity – allows win when you have LED infinite loop + Living Wish but no Conjurer's Bauble, but unnecessary with Trinket Mage)
-Proactive Answers (helping yourself win against hate)-
4-6. War Priest of Thune – Destroy Enchantments
Stony Silence ← truly offensive
Rest in Peace
Counterbalance
Wheel of Sun and Moon
Leyline of the Void
Rule of Law / Arcane Laboratory
Chains of Mephistopheles
Suppression Field
7. Ingot Chewer – Destroy Artifacts
Null Rod
Chalice of the Void
Trinisphere
Pithing Needle
Tormod's Crypt
Relic of Progenitus
Nihil Spellbomb
Cursed Totem
Sphere of Resistance
8. Krark-Clan Shaman – Destroy Creatures
Phyrexian Revoker
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
Scavenging Ooze
Glowrider
9. Cavern of Souls – Counterproofs Salvagers and a mana source when needed
10. Meddling Mage – Stop instant hate
Extirpate
Surgical Extraction
Swords to Plowshares
Path to Exile
Dismember
Riftsweeper – Recover from resolved instant hate
Extirpate
Surgical Extraction
Pithing Needle / Phyrexian Revoker
Scavenging Ooze
Relic of Progenitus
Tormod's Crypt
Nihil Spellbomb
Pernicious Deed
Spellskite – protect Salvagers
Swords to Plowshares
Path to Exile
Dismember
(Dosan the Falling Leaf – Protect Laboratory Maniac from countermagic / removal when comboing. Unnecessary – always leave 1 card on top of library before playing Lab Maniac. If they counter it, use multiple Conjurer's Baubles to put it on the bottom, draw it again, and combo off again. You don't need to worry about Swords or other creature removal because you get all 4 Conjurer's Baubles and all 4 Tops in play before playing Laboratory Maniac.)
-Reactive Answers (Keeping yourself from losing against potentially faster decks)-
11-13. Ethersworn Cannonist – Storm Combo, OmniTell
14. Tormod's Crypt or Grafdigger's Cage – Reanimator, Tin Fins, Dredge, Cephalid Breakfast, Oops All Spells
15. Ashen Rider – Show and Tell
Faerie Macabre – Reanimator, Tin Fins, Dredge, Cephalid Breakfast, Oops All Spells
Pithing Needle / Phyrexian Revoker – Goblin Charbelcher, Grindstone, Nomads En-Kor, Griselbrand, Wirewood Symbiote
Other potential wishboard targets: Gaddock Teeg, Ezuri's Brigade (when the beatdown plan becomes necessary), Wispmare (cheaper enchantment removal), Harmonic Sliver / Qasali Pridemage (consolidate slots for the sake of space?), Trygon Predator, Gorilla Shaman, Uktabi Orangutan (more on-color than Ingot Chewer)
Not that many people play it in Legacy, but Chewer hits Null Rod too which would be a pretty awful beating for this deck. I think you can make a very good case for Sliver or Pridemage though in the interest of cutting slots - I think in general the cases where you will want/need to destroy an enchantment or artifact with them, your opponent won't be killing you the next turn or anything, so maybe you can be a little less mana efficient in the interest of maximizing space. I like the idea of Spellskite to protect Salvagers from removal, so maybe that frees up enough space for one of those, or something else? Salvagers dodges Abrupt Decay too, which is pretty rad. Probably even a big reason why this might be viable even.
Does look like you've thought through your options rather extensively.
Thanks for reminding me about Null Rod. I updated the above list to include it. That card is a serious sad face for this deck - bretheren of Stony Silence.
Hmm I just realized that Ethersworn Cannonist is kind of a problematic card to play against yourself. You can still make infinite mana and draw your deck, but if you already cast Salvagers that turn, you're now 2 turns out from winning (Living Wish next turn, Lab Manaic the turn after that.) What other anti-storm options are there though?
Not many that I can think of that don't hurt you too. Leyline of Sanctity is fine. Mana Maze might be a tough enough challenge to slow them down so that you can win. Neither of those is very synergistic with your plan though. I'll keep thinking... Cause Thorn, Chalice, 3Sphere, Sphere of Resistance, and Canonist (as you said), are all pretty terrible for you too. Countermagic seems rough since you're playing LED as well.
Maybe it needs a Pyrite Spellbomb somewhere to win around its own Cannonist - maybe it can cut the Azorius Signets for Pyrite Spellbomb and a second Worldly Tutor? Also I think it would be hilarious to win with Pyrite game 1 and trick someone into boarding in Leylines of Sanctity ;-)
That could work, actually. Also useful for clearing out dudes that are causing problems on the board too.
Cool, yeah. I'm going to try -1 Conjurer's Bauble, +1 Pyrite Spellbomb before I touch the signets. I haven't been sad to see those yet.
With Pyrite Spellbomb main, I can't think of a good reason to bother with Laboratory Maniac in the side. There's nothing that can't be answered with other wishboard targets once the deck has gone off and can cast 2-3x Living Wish.
I agree with that. There may be some oddball cases like solitary confinement with sterling groves out (although, can you use bauble to recur pridemage infinitely in that case?) that you might have a problem with, but really, who plays enchantress?
I think I may cut Artificer's Intuition - it's card disadvantage and is the only blue spell in the deck that can't be cast off of Cavern of Souls on Human. It really skews the mana base towards blue, even though the deck wants more green and white in the current build. -3 Artificer's Inuition, +2 Trinket Mage, +1 Deathrite Shaman (more acceleration, and another Green Sun target that can make any color of mana.)
Also, complete overhaul of the manabase now that blue is very secondary. And meh, Deathrite Seems bad... not enough fetchlands.
Went 3-1 tonight at Denver Central with Bomberman, beating Zero 2-0, TES 2-1, Elves 2-1, and finally losing to BUG Delver 0-2. Ensnarning Bridge was a little awkward all night - either dead in the matchup or too easy to Abrupt Decay (tricking me into a false sense of security.) Tempted to go -2 Ensnaring Bridge, + 2 Engineered Explosives.
Not sure what to do about the BUG Delver / UWR Delver problem - these have been giving me trouble.
When playing this deck, I find myself waffling between playing the control role and playing the combo roll. I guess it's nice to have the flexbility, but it sure does make it hard to play. Maybe there is a way to make the control elements even stronger without diluting the combo?
Glad to have found Orzhov Pontiff - a human that deals with Elves / Thalia / Revoker / Empty the Warrens tokens / TNN.
Green Sun's Zenith is weird in this deck. Depending on the matchup/game state, it's been both absolutely amazing and totally lackluster. I guess the worst it was tonight was as a shuffle effect for Top... could be worse I guess.
Wood Sage is back in. Missed it at the tourney last weekend. Also, no reason NOT to play Karakas... I added one main and one to the Living wish board. Finally, I tend to get mana flooded more than mana screwed, so I cut Great Furnace for a second Imperial Recruiter. (Now I have to procure another Recruiter somehow... ugh)
