Monastery Mentor is the headliner and primary win condition. Those familiar with Young Pyromancer in Modern should be familiar with how Monastery Mentor plays out here, and if left unchecked it will generate a significant amount of board presence. Monastery Mentor is super-charged compared to Young Pyromancer because it and the tokens have prowess, so it puts significantly more pressure on the opponent and is capable of ending the game in just a few turns. Often Monastery Mentor will be destroyed before it can make more than a couple of tokens, but prowess means any remaining tokens are still quite valuable.

Tasigur, the Golden Fang fills a similar role here as would Tarmogoyf in a Sultai deck, meaning it serves as a low-cost and impactful piece of battlefield presence. Much like Tarmogoyf, it benefits from a high density of cheap, interactive spells in the deck to power its graveyard interaction. As a card advantage engine, Tasigur, the Golden Fang plays the part of a late game Dark Confidant. With a fetchland and a Thought Scour, Tasigur, the Golden Fang can come into play as early as turn two.

The power of Thought Scour also helps to enable card advantage and value from the graveyard, including a full playset of Lingering Souls for generating board presence. Snapcaster Mage is the perfect complement to the remainder of the deck, which is filled with the most efficient disruption spells in Modern forming a discard, Counterspell, and creature removal suite. Slaughter Pact is excellent against the creature-heavy field and a great way to get extra value from Monastery Mentor!
