I love the comments, but really this is how decks were shuffled back in the 90s.  That's part of why NM Beta cards are worth so much more than played ones.  The fact that this was recorded in 2011 means this guy was just completely ignorant, and that is what is amusing about it.  However that said if you've never bridged MTG cards you're missing out.  Grab a pile of 60 basics and give it a try.  It's much more satisfying than normal playing cards.   wink

Assuming it's Legacy, you have access to the posts:
Cloudpost, Glimmerpost, Vesuva, Thespian's Stage
You could also use the Sol lands
Ancient Tomb & City of Traitors

In Modern you have:
Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, Urza's Tower

If you're playing Vintage:
Mishra's Workshop, Library of Alexandria

In EDH you can't use lands that have mana symbols outside of your general's color identity, so you'll see some creative lands there.
Of course there's always Desert, High Market, Phyrexia's Core and all sorts of utility lands.

or in a budget situation perhaps Crystal Vein?

Just watch out for Price of Progress.

Wait, am I missing something? Why can't you donate Chained to the Rocks for Zedruu draw? It would still be enchanting your mountain, your opponent would just control it now.

Because it says "Enchant Mountain you control".  Both cards (the land and the Enchantment) would have to go under the opponent's control through the same effect to keep it from falling off, as it would fall off as a state based effect between multiple effects resolving.  You'd need a spell or effect that gives up the land and the enchantment as part of the same spell/effect.  State based effects aren't checked during the resolution of a spell, so if you switch multiple permanents under the same effect it would work.  But switching one at a time, even if you stack the effects will not.  Read the article I linked above.   You can search it for "chained to the rocks".

You should use the new commander 2013 enchantment that turns the creature into an indestructible bug with no abilities instead.

Does having a bigger bubble mailer change the price, type of shipping, or anything?

Anything under... 13oz I think?  Is the same price with USPS.

Don't forget if you want to guarantee USPS First Class PARCEL postage rates instead of them trying to bump you to priority mail, put a single packing peanut or a small plastic grocery bag smushed up in the mailer to increase the thickness to 3/4".  I put a bunch of packing peanuts from a newegg shipment I got in a bag in the garage and just pull a single one for each trade I do.  Works every time, even at the post office that made me ship priority before I found out that trick.  Also use definitely use the paypal shipping for free delivery confirmation!  smile

I've done the same thing.  I actually opened an envelope in front of the USPS worker, crumpled up a brochure and sealed it back to make it thick enough for parcel post.  I got some weird looks, but saved a little bit on postage.

Something else to keep in mind, if youre using PWEs, then your envelopes are going to go through this.  And it doesn't see to matter if you mark it non-machinable.  Look at that guy loading the machine, he doesn't care.  And this is a video from the company that makes the machines and is trying to sell them.

If you go with the 3 ring binder route, make sure that your cards are able to always lay flat.  I've seen a lot of cards in almost perfect shape, but with binder dings in them from the metal rings.  This is particularly true if you are taking cards in a backpack. I use three ring binders myself, so I'm not saying don't use them, I'm just saying to be careful about how full you allow them to become, how you close them, how you store them, and how you pack them when you travel.  Every time you close one, pull the pages so they don't get caught under one of the rings.  They make binders with D shaped rings, but I've heard those mess up too easily.  Stick to multiple smaller binders and don't stuff them.

I'll also second the white long boxes, and large white multi row card boxes for commons.

Still no response? Why isn't anybody looking into this, since i think it's just a minor and easy fixable bug?

The same thing is still happening with the FTV 20 cards.  This may or may not be an easy fix, but these guys do a great job of keeping things running and up to date.  I'm sure it will be fixed as soon as they are aware of it, and have time to update.

Also keep in mind that all the pricing data is pulled from TCG player, so they have to use TCG player's existing API to get this data.  I assume that something is just different about these sets, or possibly the way they were imported.  TCG player may use a different name for the set since both have a : in the name, and in general special characters can be obnoxious in code.

Bump.  Working on a trade with the_wizard, but there are a number of things I still need.

I was just thinking about this.  Would a great time saver!

Someone could create CSV files for each deck, then you could just use Import > CSV file.  That's something that could be it's own forum topic.

You could also import a text list using the card lists that you can download from here:
http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/a … ature/269c

(next to the deck name is a symbol that looks like an O with a line through it, that's a link to download the card list for that deck)

Just make sure if you do it that way to set your default values to Commander 2013

You can use any version of any card currently in print, provided that the name is the same.  So for example you can use Alpha Giant Growths if you want instead of M14 Giant Growths, but you can't use a Llanowar Elves in place of Elvish Mystic.  This rule also applies to Basic lands.  You can run all the Plains you want from any set, but throw a Snow-Covered Plains in there, and you'll have a problem.

Haha, it's a work in progress! I've been building decks by adding everything that could be relevant and narrowing it down. I don't know the cards well enough to pick them off the top of my head, so the process of elimination is all I got.

I do the same thing.  Usually I keep it at 60 cards as I'm building though, and put the things I'm considering on the sideboard. It makes it easier for me to cut it down by moving one thing in that's superior to something that's in the deck, and moving that thing out (to the sideboard).  This way I can cut cards without forgetting about them completely until I actually start sleeving cards up.  At that point I start deleting the ones I don't want to acquire or turned out to be sub-par.

Keep in mind that Gum is talking about EDH here too.  Some of the concepts are the same but it's not the same as a 60 card constructed deck.  It's not feasable in a 60 card deck to include some of the cards mentioned.  You have to have a plan and stick to it and execute it as consistently as possible.

EDH is a horse of a different color.  While there is strateby and you do include synergistic cards it's quite likely that you will never see a given card in a matchup.  There's a strategy to it, but it's not the same.

Also keep in mind he has a 71 card deck with 38 distinct cards right now.  He's well on his way to building an EDH deck.  All he needs is a sick general like Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, and to cut all those silly multiples... wink

Actually I think what he has is a good start on the idea, and most of the cards he's selected are decent on their own.  I was just offering some things that fit his theme.  Out of the ones I suggested, for a 60 card deck Fecundity, Carrion Feeder and Sadistic Hypnotist are probably the most interesting.  I wouldn't throw all of those cards in a 60 card constructed deck, I'm just throwing out ideas.  I'd probably cut that elk for Sakura-Tribe Elder, even though it's a 1/1 for the same initial mana cost, not having to pay a G to sac it is relevant in the early game.

Man, the depth and variety of all these mechanics and combinations is staggering and fantastic. Thanks for the advice, can't wait to playtest all of the above. I might even cave at some point and buy a few of the cards mentioned rather than relying strictly on boosters.

Yeah, there is a lot of synergy for this theme available, just be careful about putting too many cards that cost too much mana into your deck.  The big mana spells that don't do anything on their own (like Death's Presence) can be a real weak point for the deck if you rely on them too much.  Also if you play a card like Perilous Forays, be careful not to over extend.  If you take all of the land out of your deck and someone casts Armageddon, you could be screwed.  That doesn't mean you can't use it and choose not to find a basic land though if you're hard up for a sacrifice outlet.

edit: I'm going to add one more.  This is one I've had my eye on recently as it's a 1 drop sac outlet that also gives it's self +1/+1 counters. Carrion Feeder

This is exactly the type of card I would run in my Ghave EDH deck, because making tokens is fun.  Although this one may be a little high on the converted mana costs.  In addition to undying, consider also the persist creatures.  If you have a means of putting +1/+1 counters on creatures as they enter the battlefield then persist can turn into combo (The rules state that if a creature has a -1/-1 counter and you put a +1/+1 counter on it, you actually remove the -1/-1 counter.  They cancel each other out).  You want to not only trigger abilities when things die, but also from things entering the battlefield (You already have Champion of Lambholt), but here are some suggestions:

Fecundity - (triggers on all things including tokens - gives cards)
Attrition - something to do with tokens.
Awakening Zone - I underestimated this at first because I thought of it like a bad ramp spell, but really it's more like a better Breeding Pit or a green Bitterblossom.
Geralf's Messenger - Figure out a way to remove the +1s and win.
Pawn of Ulamog - Triggers on things dying, gives more bodys that are also ramp.
Ogre Slumlord - Triggers on things dying, gives more bodys.
Korozda Guildmage - Sac for benefit
Falkenrath Noble - Blood Artist #2
Lumberknot - You want things to die right?
Perilous Forays - I wish this didn't cost 5 mana, but still some sick ramp.
Growth Spasm - land + token
Trading Post - make tokens, sac dudes, gain life, recur artifacts... proffit???
Sadistic Hypnotist - Yeah
Death's Presence - possibly too much of a win more... not sure
Ashnod's Altar
Reassembling Skeleton - a mana sink for sure, but a solid card that you can sac and sac and sac some more.

Also look for ways to remove the +1/+1 counters from your undying guys so you can create an engine...  I use Ghave, Guru of Spores in EDH, but he's not in your colors.

It starts really basic, but it covers a lot by the end.

Yeah, I wasn't looking at anything worth more than around $2-3 anyway, so the value would be there.  Also, if the cards are small enough to be loaded in a regular envelope and be sent via letter mail, you don't even need to worry about filling out customs documents, and it's under $3 to ship (albeit without tracking...although there's probably an option for that too).  Obviously you would use hard sleeves to protect them, but you can get a good number of them into an oversize envelope.  Bubble envelopes are overkill, since they won't prevent bending and just make the package thicker, which could end up making the envelope thicker than the little slot they use to determine if it will go letter mail or not.  Anyway, I'll propose a trade when I get home from work and we'll go from there smile

Sounds good.  smile  I do use PWEs (plain white envelopes) when I can.  But if something is thicker than 2-3 top loaders there's too much of a risk of it getting caught even if you mark it non-machinable. I've had an envelope that fit through that little slot they use still get ripped to shreds before reaching the destination.  This was domestic, using a $0.66 stamp, marking it non-machinable and handing it to the guy in the post office and telling him it was non-machinable.  He checked it with the slot, said it was good to go, but then only half the envelope made it.

A letter to canada is just over $1 to send, but agreeing on a letter sized trade is the problem.  (I get uncomfortable when more than a few cards are in a PWE).  Also with international trades, I can't buy the postage through PayPal, so I either have to go to USPS.com and get it, or go to the post office.  I have various methods of packaging depending mostly on the thickness.  The bubble envelope isn't so much for physical protection of the cards as it is just to let the post office know that it's a package, not a letter, so they will treat it as such.  I still use top loaders regardless of whether it is in a PWE or bubble envelope.  I have not tried to send an 'over sized' envelope, so I don't know how much that costs, but if I go to the post office to mail a 'package' they always make me fill out the customs forms regardless of the weight or how little I say it's worth.  I'll look into the oversized envelope suggestion and see if it's any cheaper.  I would think that it may be possible to fit multiple stacks of cards in an over sized envelope to reduce the overall thickness.

the_wizard_666 wrote:

If you're willing to work a deal with a Canadian, I'll happily propose a trade with you.  Found a few cards not on my wishlist and am sure we can come to an agreement.  I can also provide an extra playset or two of Darksteel Citadel for future decks, since you say you love it and I have over 50 of them (bought a LOT of Darksteel back in the day tongue ).  Let me know and I'll work up an offer smile

I have nothing against Canadians, but I have to be a bit picky about trades to Canada.  Generally if I'm trading to Canada I like for the trade to be $10-20.  Under $10 and it's not worth it to send, over $20 and you may have to pay import/customs fees or taxes.  (There's some wiggle room on the 'value' here since it all depends on what's on the Customs form, i.e. TCG Low value could be used).  If it's more than a couple of cards it's going to cost me $6 to ship, but I don't want to trade down a $15 card for a pile of $1 cards either.  Ideally I can do small stuff for small stuff as long as it's cheaper to trade than it is to buy the things.

There's a trade on my completed list called "Small Trade to Canada", which is a good example, a bunch of small low value cards that I don't think I'll ever use for a bunch of small low value cards that I can put in decks.  I think it cost me $5-$6 to ship, but the total value was $12, and the cost to buy the things using the optimize tool on TCG Player was around $10.  Still not a major savings over just buying the cards, but what I was giving up was not useful to me at all, and the person I was trading with was trying to complete sets.

So yeah, I'll trade to Canada, but I may be more picky about it.

From a rules perspective, I don't believe that you can pay life for an effect that will cause you to go to negative life:

118.4. If a cost or effect allows a player to pay an amount of life greater than 0, the player may do so only if his or her life total is greater than or equal to the amount of the payment. If a player pays life, the payment is subtracted from his or her life total; in other words, the player loses that much life. (Players can always pay 0 life.)

So long as hes not paying the life. He can still lose life that takes him below 0 is my understanding?

So like as long as he doesnt lose for being at 0 and he gets attacked for 5 with no blockers that would take him down to -5.

You're both correct.  So you can't pay the life if you don't have it (Phyrexian Mana for example), but if you're losing life as part of an effect (Ad Nauseam)  you can choose to keep going and go into the negatives.  This is because you're not paying life to gain the card, you're losing life based on the card's mana cost.

Gatherer wrote:

Ad Nauseam:
10/1/2008    You may continue to reveal cards with Ad Nauseam even if your life total has been reduced to 0 or less. If you continue, you will continue to lose life, dropping your life total into negative numbers. As soon as you stop, you'll lose the game as a state-based action.

Death's Shadow:
3/1/2010    If your life total is less than 0 and an effect (such as the one from an opponent's Abyssal Persecutor) is keeping you from losing the game, Death's Shadow's ability will actually increase its power and toughness. For example, if your life total is -2, Death's Shadow gets +2/+2.

There are several sources out there where this has already been done.  I compiled a quick list of cards that were common inclusions.  I put links in the comments of the decklist with other lists and a couple of articles.

If the idea is to get to a negative life total, or near death experience, then phyrexian mana is your friend.  I suggest making your deck smaller with Gitaxian Probe.  The information it gives you is also worth the two life.  In addition, other threats that let you channel out life at will include Moltensteel Dragon, Hex Parasite  and Immolating Souleater

You may also want to consider protecting your creatures with shroud or giving them haste.  Lightning Greaves and Hall of the Bandit Lord come to mind.  Note that you cannot pay the three life if you don't have it, even if you have a Platinum Angel on the field, but it can help you reduce your life quickly to be more aggressive.

Also be careful with Angel's Grace.  It doesn't reset you to one, it just prevents you from dying to damage, or losing that turn.  You can still go negative and lose on your end step if you lose life or pay life.

If you want to make it more competitive and aggressive there are builds that use Thoughtseize Plunge Into Darkness, Spoils of the Vault and Ad Nauseam (This is where that Angel's Grace thing comes into play.  You can go negative with Ad Nauseam and keep going, you don't lose the game until the spell finishes resolving and state based effects are checked.  If you Angel's Grace first, let it resolve then cast Ad Nauseam you can go negative, and assuming you can win that turn you're good, but if you end the turn you lose). If you want to splash red you can use Fling to kill and avoid the whole combat step thing.  Also Rite of Consumption is sort of like fling but can put you back to the positive on life.

With the Ad Nauseam // Angel's Grace combo you can can dig until you are far into the negative, cast a Death's Shadow and it will actually be LARGER than 13/13 because your negative life total adds to it's power.  The problem then is just giving it haste, or flinging it.  The Thoughtseize and Gitaxian Probe make sure you know when to combo out.  This requires nine mana though to do it all on one turn (4BBBBW), so it would be easier to just use it as a draw engine, and not a massive combo machine.

Currently looking to acquire a few more of these myr tokens and value them about $2.50 each (trade only).

http://deckbox.org/forum/misc.php?item=244&download=0

I also would like a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and possibly a Marit Lage Token too.

Thanks everyone for the trades so far!

"Some people get their eye's poked out by birds..."

So I'm brewing up this 60 card bird deck for fun.  Originally I wanted to use Storm Crow, but then my competitive nature kicked in and I cut it.  This is still a work in progress, but open to suggestions and ideas.   It's pretty basic bird tribal, using mass pump cards that use counters and thrumming bird to proliferate those and mass pump more.  There's no ramp, but there is a focus on birds that provide card advantage.  Any birds that I over looked or cards that fit the theme are welcome suggestions.

Here's my list in progress.  Things on the sideboard are things I'm considering.

I put my EDH decks in the Card Way boxes, but it's a tight fit for some of them.  Those boxes have an inner dimension of 2 1/8 inches (depth) by 2 3/4 (width).  I would say that 2 1/4" depth would probably fit most single sleeved decks.  Not sure about double sleeved.  I've only double sleeved entire 60 card decks or individual rares in EDH decks.

What's the point of Hedron Crab?  Just trying to mill your opponents with this one card?  I feel like this deck doesn't have anything really to do on turns one or two, so I think this slot could be better filled with a ramp guy (think Llanowar Elves or equivalent) or if you're going the beat down route (with groundswell) Slippery Bogle

If you can afford it I'd say you should grab yourself some Lotus Cobra because it will help you ramp into your win conditions.  Also although it doesn't say "landfall" on the card, I kind of like the card Sporemound, as it's ability seems very relevant.  I feel Primeval Titan demands some non-basic lands to abuse him to his fullest.  Consider also some man lands like the classic Mishra's Factory, or Dryad Arbor, or just about any land with a decent enters the battlefield condition.  (Halimar Depths and Soaring Seacliff were both commons).  Seems legit to run one copy fo an ETBT land to make Prime Time fly on attack...

Also I really think that this deck could benefit from one Azusa, Lost but Seeking or Oracle of Mul daya (or both).

Rather than buying a mapped box, consider buying a 'repacked' box.  This way people still have cards they can take home or add to their collection.  I've seen these on e-bay, a store opens a bunch of packs pulls cards they need, and then sells the rest of the box at about half the price.   You won't have any bombs in the box, but for playing limited it could work.

This is the type of thing I'm talking about.  I've never bought one, but it seems like the most honest way to do something like this.  Also might be good for iron man MTG.

A store local to me also does junk repacks where they draft from junk rares and cards that no one wants to buy as singles.  They are setup similar to packs.  Everyone gets a mystery pack of junk cards and drafts from that.  They charge $7 and call it 'cheapo drafts'.  From their website "Re-Constructed booster packs from a huge range of sets means you never know what you'll get. A very casual draft for super cheap! If you've never seen the cards, they're new to you!"
