I actually considered Jin-Gitaxis, but the deck doesn't really have any mana acceleration, so a 10 mana creature, no matter how well it fits, would come into play so rarely in this build that it isn't really worth adding (unless the needed tweaks are made to bring it in faster).  As for the other suggestions you made Sully, I must say I like the idea of making both of us draw, especially with Venser's Journal thrown in there...however, I would lean more toward running Ivory Tower and Spellbook to preserve the mana curve in there.  With all the draw in the deck, it shouldn't be a problem to pull both out at some point.  And you're right about Psychosis Crawler...that thing is a beast!

Varble, I like Geth's Grimoire out of those suggestions.  Confessor would be good, but I dropped white out of the equation, so I'm not really wanting to work it back in.  The others won't really work with this setup, as I don't really want to discard too many of my own cards.  That is, unless I make a bigger deck or something.

Anyway, based on these suggestions, I've made the following changes:

-1 Howling Mine in favor of +1 Font of Mythos
-2 Stroke of Genius in favor of +2 Temple Bell

I really want to do a bit more than that, as I like the suggestions...I just need to go through and see what sort of changes should be made to incorporate them.  Perhaps throwing in my Demonic Tutor, or something to that effect.  Really though, I'm not sure what to take out to make things work.

Figured I'd bump for a bit of feedback on the deck.  It's by no means final, and I had to drop some cards that I really liked to keep it at 60 cards, but I'd like to think it's more or less where I want it.  The current build is Black/Blue with a splash of red.  I thought about running it without red, but I considered Cerebral Vortex to be an important card to keep in the deck, so yeah, red stayed.  I also know there's some glaring weaknesses, but I'm not particularly worried about them in the casual group I play in...at least not at the moment.  Just thought I'd post it to see what people think.

After looking up those cards, Bloodchief Ascension got me all giddy, like "oooh, that's mean!" Burning Inquiry would be a pretty good fit in the right build, but the fact that both players have to randomly discard cards makes me leery.  I could add in a few cards to retrieve spells from my graveyard, but that may detract from the deck's focus.  As it is, I've slotted it in as a "maybe," because it does have potential.  Once I put something together I'll post a deck list and go from there.

True, but the counters and such would be cards I'd want to keep in my hand.  I could always use Murder or Lightning Bolt or something to deal with attackers, there's tons of options really, so I'd want to keep my hand stocked just in case.

Oooh! Some good ideas there!

Forced Fruition - Wow, what an awesome idea!  Every spell they cast they draw 7 cards...that's a quick way to deck oneself if they're not careful, and I haven't seen much enchantment elimination in my casual group, outside of a single Nevinyrral's Disk in one of my buddy's decks.  This would absolutely brutalize most opponents!

Curse of Exhaustion - Great idea to defend against whatever Forced Fruition pulls, but at the same time it would mean splashing white into a deck that may already run three colours.  I might consider it if I don't run red, but I don't think this should be more than 2-3 colours if it can be helped.  Of course,  I could always use tutors to ensure I have what I need to cast it...

Chains of Mephistopheles - While I really like the card, I don't really want to spend $70/card to get it in a casual deck.  Also, with the idea of making the opponent draw only to discard in their discard phase, Anvil of Bogardan kind of goes against the whole theme.  I would definitely like the combo better if I was planning this as a regular discard deck, but with this theme, it's not so good.

Liliana's Caress - This one I actually had in mind, I just couldn't remember what it was called (just recently found one in a collection I bought, hopefully there's more in the boxes I didn't go through yet).  Figure I'd probably run both just to double up the hurt.

Underworld Dreams - Oh man, why didn't I think of this?  If I'm gonna make them draw in order to discard and take damage, I might as well make the draw take damage too!  That would definitely belong!

As for defenses, with blue it's not hard to run Counterspells and the like, or Boomerang to take care of any problems that arise.  Norn's Annex or Crawlspace would definitely help as far as incoming attacks, black has Darkness, a ton of spot removal for creatures, and some generally nasty tricks up it's sleeve.  There's also plenty of options in red if I decide to go with the tri-color path, and there's always the artifact option...an Isochron Scepter with Darkness or Counterspell on it would definitely ruin someone's day tongue Not too worried on the defensive side of things at this point smile

So I've been going through a bit of a bout of insomnia tonight, and my brain started toying with some deck ideas.  Most of them were, well, kinda meh, but one stuck out to me - I want to build a deck around Megrim...but not a discard deck.  The key concept is to reduce their maximum hand size with Gnat Miser, and maybe Locust Miser (although the latter's converted mana cost seems a bit high for my liking), then use spells like Stroke of Genius to force them to draw before their discard phase and have to discard down.  Spells that have a targeted draw and discard effect (ie Careful Consideration) would also make a good fit.  I'm also thinking of splashing red for Cerebral Vortex, and possibly a couple burn spells.  The real question though is simple - would this work?  I'm not looking to win a tournament or anything with it.  Basically, I've just really liked Megrim since I first saw the card, but despite many attempts, I just can't seem to put together a viable, fun to play discard deck...figured I might as well try a new twist to see how it would work out.

Couple questions:

a) Are you interested in foils?  I've got a foil Sword of Light and Shadow that I might consider parting with if you are.

b) Assuming you're interested in the foil Sword, do you have anything else that's not listed (preferably from my wishlist)?  All you have listed that I'm looking for is the 2x Cavern of Souls, and nothing else from the trade/inventory lists on your page really stands out as something I might use, so it may be tricky to make a fair trade for it.  And if the foil Sword isn't of interest, well, no worries then tongue

A couple suggestions:

i) This deck would be brutalized by artifact destruction.  Although in my experience it's rare, this is the kind of deck that would spawn hate decks.  As such, you may want to consider adding a Darksteel Forge or two to the mix (even if it's just to the sideboard).  It's mana-intensive, but would render any destroy effect useless (specifically Shatterstorm).

ii) Since you're running various Bringers anyway, why not add the Bringer of the Black Dawn?  It basically allows you to choose the card you draw, at the cost of two life...there's something to be said about a permanent Vampiric Tutor tongue  Barring that, a few Worldly Tutors would be a great addition to help get those bringers out when you need them.  Enlightened Tutor wouldn't be bad either, but it can't search for the Bringers, and the cards it CAN search for are all cards that you have full playsets of anyway...plus it costs a ton more than the Worldly Tutor.

Aside from that, it's hard to say how well it'll perform without playtesting it.  The first suggestion is somewhat situational (although having even one indestructible Lodestone Myr in play would be pretty sweet), but the second should make the deck slightly more consistent, especially if you add both the black Bringer and a set of Tutors.  But regardless, you should try it out first, see how it does, and go from there.  Since it's just for casual play anyway, you could even ask your group if they'd be okay with you using proxies to test the deck out before you buy/trade for the cards you still need.

Ah, totally misread the card.  I'm never fully awake this early in the day tongue

I don't like the Swans of Bryn Argoll in this deck.  Unless you plan to do enough damage to it to mill your opponent, you're doing nothing but give your opponent card advantage, which is never a good idea.  Opal Guardian or Silver Knight may be better choices, and both have the added benefit of improving the deck's mana curve.  Otherwise, it seems like a solid build, although testing would be the only real way to know for sure.

I used to do that when I started out too. I still regret trading my Vampiric Tutor, but I got pieces for three different decks, one of which I still use (albeit in a modified format from what it used to be), so it was definitely worth the trade in that regard.  Personally, I'm mildly interested in the card, but it's a low want for me (no decks requiring it, but may build something in the future).  If you don't get any satisfactory offers, feel free to check my inventory and see what I have...bearing in mind that I mostly play Legacy, so my Standard-legal stuff is somewhat limited.  No rush or worries though, as I won't be able to send anything off until the end of the month...leaving the country for a couple weeks on Saturday.

Also, make sure you don't want the card for one of your own decks.  It may net you a bunch of good stuff in trade, but if you need it for a deck, you'll kick yourself for letting it go.

Alternatively, why not offer a "default language" option, so that cards in languages other than English will be the default for users from non-English speaking regions.  Just a thought.

I've seen option 2 work elsewhere, but 2 minutes is too long.  1 minute seems to be the standard from what I've seen.  Option 1 is also a great idea.  Using both will probably get rid of the majority of the spam issues...spambots won't make it past the second option, and any human spammers will just move on if they have to wait a minute between posts.

So is it more beneficial/ cost effective to buy booster packs or individual cards

Depends.  If you're looking for bulk commons, get a booster box...you'll likely get a playset of most, if not all, of the commons in that set, and the rares/mythics/foils I draw typically add up to the hundred bucks I paid for the box.  If you're looking for specific cards it's best to just buy singles.  Sure, you could get lucky and pull a Sublime Archangel from the first pack you open, but the odds aren't very good, and you may spend more than it's worth trying to pull it.  If both, I'd say buy a few packs (or even a box), and a few singles.  If you buy a rare and 5 packs, you may end up pulling a second copy of the card you bought individually, but if you don't, you still increase your library...and you never know what card you may pull that will spark your next deck idea!

I just looked at your black deck, and although I don't have any specific ideas, I would like to give a bit of general advice.  First, you need to cut out a few cards and put some multiples of the ones that work best together.  For example, Phylactery Lich is an awesome card, but if you read it you discover that you need artifacts.  Since I see no artifacts in the deck, it's an expendable card, and can be cut to add one of the cards that fits what you're trying to do with the deck.  Now, looking at the cards, it looks like you're trying for life gain and discard, so that would be your theme.  Don't try and do 500 different things with a deck.  Pick one or two and roll with it.  Anything that doesn't fit with your theme needs to have a reason to be in the deck, and if that reason isn't commonplace, it belongs in the sideboard.  For example, Murder doesn't fit the discard theme directly, but it can be used to get rid of your opponent's creatures and will feed Blood Artist, which DOES play into the theme.  Also, although it may never come into play, you can use it on your own creatures.  I can't think of anything in Standard that you would target it with, but something like Graveborn Muse can outlive it's usefulness, and it would be a great way to get rid of it.  Now, I'm gonna delve into Legacy for a situational card (since I'm really not familiar with Standard) and say Circle of Protection: Red for an example.  It's great...so long as you're playing against a red deck.  That's the kind of spell that shouldn't be in a main deck (unless you're running red and need to protect yourself from your own cards), but would see play in a sideboard.  And finally, you need to look at your mana curve.  Since you're not running any kind of mana acceleration, anything with over a 5 mana casting cost is probably not going to see substantial play time, as it would require at LEAST 7 turns (assuming you draw enough lands that fast) to get into play.

All that said, don't break the bank to get cards...what I do is build the deck I would like to build, and go buy/trade for the cards I don't have afterward.  So just because you don't have four copies of Sign in Blood doesn't mean you can't put them in your deck.  I will typically build a deck on here, then fish out the cards I have, and add what I don't have to my wish list.  From there, I'll print the list out when I go to one of the local game shops, and know what I need when I trade on here.  I will also prioritize my want list - that is, "I need X cards for deck A, Y cards for deck B, and Z cards for deck C."  If I'm a couple cards away from finishing deck A, I will try and get those cards first, and go in order of completion percentage, so that I can fully build deck A in as short a time frame as possible.  Also, take cards that you don't play that are reasonably sought after and put them in a binder, and take it with you when you go to buy cards.  You never know who might have a card you need that they'd trade for something you may not be wanting to use...just be sure you know what the cards are worth so you don't shoot yourself in the foot tongue

It's a common problem on smaller forums.  I used to mod on another forum, and the easiest way we found there was to require a new user's first 10 posts to be subject to moderator approval.  It was tedious and a mild annoyance, and it didn't stop the spammers from posting, it just kept those posts from hitting the main boards.  And since they needed a minimum of 10 approved posts, even if one cleverly snuck in (I noticed that sometimes they'd copy a post and sneak a link into the middle of it, so when scanning the posts in the queue, it would look legit), the majority never saw the light of day.

I know I haven't been contributing much here, mainly because I don't know much about what's available in Standard, but I do know that where you sacrifice nontoken creatures, Reassembling Skeleton is a must...even if it does cycle out in the next rotation.  Maybe something else will come in the next block that fills the void, but yeah, it needs to be there as long as possible.  I'd say 4 of them...can always cut back the numbers if needed later tongue

I noticed the same issue with Land Tax, and found this thread while searching for an appropriate place to mention it before creating a new thread.  Since the Time Spiral legality issue hasn't been addressed either, I figured this would be a good place to mention it.

BG with Blood Artist and a sacrifice theme...sounds like we need to add Exquisite Blood to double up the life gained...I'd say x2 since it's more of a "just for fun" addition.

Meira would help deal with state-based removal, but you'd have to factor in a way to ensure you get her out.  I think having multiple indestructible artifacts along with flicker effects would be the way to go.  I'm not sure off the top of my head of anything Standard-legal that would fit the bill that hasn't been mentioned already, but I will say that it's harder to deal with an indestructible artifact than an indestructible artifact creature, so I'd work the Darksteel Axe in while it's still legal and see what can replace it when the new block debuts.

No, unfortunately it's an average of all editions.  This is something people have been mentioning for a while, not sure if there's an easy way to incorporate it though.

Personally, if the value of the cards is within a few bucks, and I'm trading stuff I won't use for stuff that will see some time in a deck, I'm okay with a trade.  But it totally depends on the trade...something in the $40 range for a bunch of $3 cards isn't really worth it to me, but that $40 card for a $20 card and a bunch of cards in the $2-3 range that adds up to, say, $37 may be worthwhile if the cards I'd be receiving are needed for a deck.
