I picked up a number of Russian boosters over the weekend, and have added some of the cards to my tradelist.

One not on the list that I'll consider letting go is an Assemble the Legion.

Also, I know it's a long shot,  but my girls are currently in their Girl Scout fundraising cookie sale.  Boxes are $4 each.  If you are interested in some cookies, shoot me an email message  [z][01][riemer][at][hotmail][dot][com].  We could arrange payment via PayPal (adding $0.50 to cover the transaction fee), or could accept personal checks.  You would need to pay shipping costs (the lower of flat rate Priority or actual weight rate).  Checks would be held for two weeks to make sure they clear (sorry, but we've been burned before).

We live in a rural area, so sales opportunities are limited.  If girls are selling in your area, by all means support them first. smile

EDITS: case, word choice

That makes sense.  I don't know how I missed that difference.

ADDING ITEMS TO THE WISHLIST
Okay, like everyone else, I've been using the new interface for a while now, and I like it overall.  There's one area, however, where the new interface just seems to get in the way: adding cards to the wishlist, particularly when working with a single edition.

Currently, when you click in the wishlist field, you get a popup that has all inventory for that card name listed, and you have to click the "+" button to add cards to the wishlist.

After clicking the "+" button, I need to specify the quantity, edition, condition, language, and any special features (e.g., foil, full art, promo).

Since inventory now keeps a separate row for each card variant (e.g., Act of Treason in M11, M12, and Gatecrash), would it be possible to go back to entering wishlist items directly from the inventory screen, with logic directing the system to add a version that matches the current record/row?

   Example:
Looking at Act of Treason in my Inventory, I have three rows reflecting M11, M12, and Gatecrash.
If I click into the Wishlist field on the the Gatecrash record/row, I'd like to simply input a number
and have the system add that quantity to my wishlist using the Gatecrash edition.

Because some may still want to add other versions of different editions, a button or icon to launch the current method of adding cards to the wishlist should be maintained.

SETTING WISHLIST DEFAULTS
When I add cards to the Wishlist, I most often (over 99% of the time) specify the same details for Language and Condition (NM, English).  Would it be possible to let us set defaults for wishlist items (only language and condition), similar to what can be done for inventory (which is not working, by the way--the edition will not stick for me in Chrome).  Rather than seeing them in the Wishlist popup, however, I'd prefer to see them in my profile settings.

ADDITIONAL CONDITION OPTION
Currently, when we add cards (to Inventory, Tradelist, or Wishlist) we may select from a number of condition options, or may leave the condition information blank.  In the Wishlist, would it be possible to add an "ANY" for Version, Condition, and Language (and, possibly, the promo/foil/etc. field)?

When the fields are left blank (intentionally or not), trading partners must ask each other about versions (being offered, or desired), and the trade configuration window flags many records as not being matches, just because the versions do not match.

If "ANY" becomes an option on the wishlist (specifying that the trader will accept any variant for the category in which it is selected), the number of rows flagged in trading opportunities as non-matches would be reduced.

   Example:
I want three Act of Treason for a current Standard deck.
I just want it for the deck I will play, so I don't care if it is M11, M12,
   Gatecrash, or any other edition.
Similarly, I don't care about the language or condition--I just want
the card so I may add it to my deck.

When searching trading opportunities, any potential partner with a version of Act of Treason would appear as a valid trade--the row for Act of Treason would show up without any highlight.

Persons with copies of Act of Treason for trade would also benefit, because they would know immediately if the other trader would accept the version they have (e.g., M11, Good, Spanish).

The "ANY" option only makes sense for the wishlist, because it indicates the recipient does not care what Edition and/or Condition and/or Language.  It does not make sense on the Tradelist or Inventory--leaving things blank (unspecified) makes more sense there.

Okay, I'm disegaging the clutch on my brain now.  Thank you for your time.  Have a nice day.

In my Inventory, if I like to use the Edition Printed In filter to view only cards from specific sets.  However, the results show all records for cards that share a name with those printed in the specific set.

   Example:

Filter: Edition Printed In [Is one of] [Gatecrash]

   Card: Act of Treason

I get records (rows) for Act of Treason from Gatecrash, M12, and M11.

Is this the intended result? I expected non-Gatecrash rows to be suppressed.

In summary, when filtering by edition, I expect to see only cards that match that edition.

  • I'd support a checkbox/option to allow cards to display that were printed in the selected set(s) but are flagged as from other editions.

  • I'd support a checkbox/option to allow cards to appear that were printed in the selected set(s) but have not edition information specified.

EDIT: added question mark in subject line

Thanks for the tip. I guess using the word "Import" is misleading to me for deck building. It sounds like adding to my inventory.

I agree with you there.  "Add cards" might be a better label, but that is up to Sebi and company.

"Add cards" would fit either Inventory or Deck Building. Do you agree?

I figured out why... the rules text in your database doesn't match the text on the card. It says this instead:

When Oblivion Ring comes into play, remove another target nonland permanent from the game.
When Oblivion Ring leaves play, return the removed card to play under its owner's control.

Thanks for the post.  Someone else pointed out a different wording difference in another thread.  Sebi and company are aware of the issue.

The rules text in the current database came from an initial load some time back.  Sebi was not aware that the rules text could change.  I believe he is working on a way to re-import the most recent rules text.

I'm not sure if that will happen in the forthcoming release.  I'll let Sebi or Laura chime in as to when this should be addressed.

Thanks, again, for posting.

(This might not be the right place for this post.) I'm new to using this site, and I found a couple areas of possible improvement that would make this site much more useful. Also, if any of these features are already implemented, could someone please describe how to accomplish them?

Add copy of deck to Inventory
This is very useful since I enter cards from my binder into my inventory at a different time than my decks. It would also prevent entering cards twice.

The way I add decks to inventory is the copy the decklist (typically from the Wizards site) and paste it into the Import > Card List option.

If referring to the idea of making a deck and then adding the cards you used to inventory, you can manually update the inventory from within the deck builder page.  At this time there is no way to automatically do this.

Alivezombie16 wrote:

Add foil/set options in deckbuilding
Would be useful to keep track of what cards I have in foil, so I know what other ones I should trade for. It would also be able to more accurately be used to see what cards I don't have for a deck yet since it can compare sets to my inventory (or have the option to ignore sets.)

You have the ability to specify details (e.g., foil, promo, full art) in the inventory.  At this time, the deck builder uses only the card name, and not any details (e.g., edition, foiled).

Alivezombie16 wrote:

Add missing cards in deck to Wishlist
Have a button to automatically add all cards in one deck that I don't own to my Wishlist. Allows me to deckbuild constantly and allow my Wishlist to be updated so other users know what cards I need.

I like this request.  It is something that would be helpful to many (if not most) traders.

When on the deck page, just click the Import button/link at the top.  It will present a screen area for adding cards just like the one in the main inventory area.  There's no need to check them in your inventory to add them to your deck (unless that's how you prefer to do it).

Sebi is working on an update to the trade interface.  Better filtering for trading partners and specific cards is part of the next release (due in the next few weeks, unless things have changed).

I do like the checkbox idea.  I'm not sure if he can work it in for this one, but I do think it is a worthwhile idea.  Check the boxes, and then click "Add to new trade" or something similar. It would be great.

I have to admit, I'm totally against sub-forums, mostly because they have rendered MTGSalvation nearly unreadable and will put a huge amount of pressure on moderators/administrators to be constantly moving topics from one to the other. I think it's better to keep the single forum and use the thread title (or possibly meta-tags on the thread itself?) to differentiate between formats.

A fair argument, LootPinata.  I don't think there are any easy answers to this.

I think sub-forums are a good idea, but some thought should be give to which sub-categories.

Ideas:
Deckbuilding Basics (the Meta game, deck types, synergies, combos, land quantities)
EDH
Standard
Modern
Extended
Vintage
Legacy
Casual ("The Kitchen Table"?)

Maybe some additional sticky topics on the meta game? Heck, I don't know a lot about it. Perhaps that would fit under "Deckbuilding Basics" (added above).

Alternate sub-categories could include:
Basics (Beginners)
Pimp my Deck (Fine-tuning forum)
Combo Corner (Card A + Card B = You Lose)
Tribal

I believe there already is one, but nobody reads/follows it.

Those just seem to be guidelines for the subject lines.  Would something more detailed be appropriate?

Sure, not everyone will follow them, but if we can get some improvement...

We also could start replying to messages that don't comply by pointing them to the guidelines.

What kind of feedback are you seeking?

To help out the members of this community, consider these topics:

  • What's your overall strategy or win condition? Bring out a big baddie, or mill them dry? Let us know how you envision things playing out.

  • If you have specific cards in your build that you want to keep or build around, tell us why, or what you had in mind.

  • What kind of help do you want? Ideas to make it faster? Help against a specific kind of deck?

  • What format will you be playing--Standard, Modern, Vintage Legacy? Or are you just planning to play casually with no format rules or banned cards?

  • Do you want cards limited to those in your inventory, or are you open to acquiring other cards?

  • If open to acquiring some cards, do you have a maximum spend in mind? $25? $50? $100? The sky's the limit?

All of this will really help us know how to help you.

I'm sure Sebi will review your feedback, but until he does I wanted to let you know that he is working on an overhaul of the trade interface.  Things will be changing soon.

That was probably me tongue and all of your points are valid, I agree 100% and while I'd love for people to offer insight my primary focus is just that I'd like to know where people would like help instead of just having to guess, because if I guess and I'm guessing too expensive then I could make someone feel like you need to spend a bunch of money to have a good deck or even to have fun, (this is the opposite of the truth by the way, generally the more competitively you play the less you are able to enjoy playing casually sad) and if I guess too low then my advice could just be useless, but I say again you are absolutely correct it can be quite intimidating when you first get here, I was intimidated and I've been playing since Kamigawa block (7ish years I guess that makes it) but I'll say that I'd love to get advice even if I never use it, no pressure to anyone but being able to discuss advice has improved my deckbuilding significantly even just since I joined the site

Sorry again HikingStick, I miss having Bolt in standard quite a bit so I react a bit too strongly when I see a Shock varient being used in modern tongue

No worries.  I didn't present that tidbit to make anyone feel bad.  I just used it as an example--some haven't developed that encyclopedic knowledge yet.

I think I can speak for the noobs here, as I've only been part of this community about a year.  When I first came in, I saw lots of people asking for deck advice.  Even though I had been playing for nearly 10 years, I didn't feel like I had a solid grasp of deck building, so I lurked.  Eventually I asked for opinions on some of my decks, but I still lurked when others needed help.

Fast forward to today.  I now am pretty comfortable with my general deck-building, but still have limited experience with many of the cards in many blocks.  I was a coffee table player who started with 8th edition and a hodge-podge of cards I picked up from people leaving the game over the years. I picked up a few newer packs along the way, but nothing like I have in the past year.  So, in reality, I can't name a bunch of cards that fit every scenario.  Remember, it wasn't too long ago that one of you commented that it made you "sad" to think I wasn't running Lightning Bolt (I was running some other burn spell that did only two damage). Some of us just don't know all those details about all those cards (it well could be my age, too wink). It can be quite intimidating.

Even now, there are some decks I feel comfortable commenting on, and others that I look at and say, "I have no idea whether or not this works." It most often comes down to whether or not I have played something similar (or against something similar), or if I know most of the cards in the deck, or know a specific card that just might fit. It has been a learning process.

One of the best players in Minnesota frequents our LGS--I'll cal him Hal.  There are some other good players, too (including one who had his deck featured on YouTube as one of the features at a major pro tour event).  Most are helpful, if asked, but much is learned just by watching and playing.  Just last month, as Hal was helping out another player, he paid me a great compliment that spoke to how much my deck building skills have improved during the past 12 months.  He said, "have you seen his Goblin Deck" (referring to one of my Krenko's Dance Party variants)? "Every card he has impacts the board somehow. Every card is designed to pump up his goblins, or to run over and smack your face." He had no idea what it meant to hear that from him.  It let me know I was becoming a better player, but it took time, and my confidence in my skills still lags behind..

So, as long you you and I--and other active members--keep helping out when people post, making this a welcoming, friendly place, I'm sure more and more of them will eventually start to share their opinions. Let's just give them some time.

I understand your perspective.  I was a zero budget player for many years.  That said, you have 15 pages of artifacts in your inventory, so I believe you have much room to tweak this one as you go along.

Right off the bat, there are a few in your inventory I'd consider working in.  Memnite is the first that comes to mind. It looks like you have three. As zero cost one-drops that buff anything with affinity for artifacts, they are a great T1 play.  Thinking of other zero-drops, Darksteel Relic comes to mind, and you have that, too. Spidersilk Net can help you if up against fliers, and Tormod's Crypt exiles your opponent's graveyard. Both are also zero-drops.

You also have a large variety of Myrs.  Look them over.  Some of the most annoying decks I've played against have used Myrs that mutually benefit all other Myrs.

I would absolutely drop Akroma's Vengeance, especially since you are running artifact heavy.  It will wipe out all of your artifacts in addition to those your opponent controls.  Austere Command is a bit better, but still risky, as you must choose two abilities.

I like Qumulox. With the number of artifacts you'll be playing, it should come out fairly early.  Being cheap (avg. $0.22 as of this writing), I'm guessing you could trade to get two or three without much trouble.  If using Deckbox, the most you'd be out is postage, but if you have friends with large collections, they may have some lying around.

One of the things that the most consistent decks have in common is that they tend to have fewer unique cards (they run multiple copies of everything). You've done that with many of your creatures, but most of the rest of your cards are one-offs. I'd go through them to see if you can substitute in multiples for some of those one-offs.

Aside from that, I'll pass on the only other deck-building tip to which I've latched on: 1) figure out your primary strategy or theme, 2) figure out how to support or attain that strategy, and 3) work to address any obvious weaknesses.

For example:
1) I want to overrun my opponent with tons of tokens.
2) Add cards that buff token creatures (e.g., Intangible Virtue), or increase the number of tokens I can play (e.g., Parallel Lives, cards with the Populate mechanic).
3)Weaknesses
a) My tokens are generally weak and are wiped out by global -1/-1 effects. I can run Intangible Virtue, but should also look for something that enables me to destroy enchantments.
b) I have no protection from fliers. I need to sideboard some fliers, or look for some spells that remove flying, burn directly, or give my creatures reach.
c) It may take many, many turns to get enough tokens, so I need to slow down my opponent. Sphere of Safety could work nicely, since my opponent will need to pay for each creature to swing. Blue spells like Blustersqualland Downpourcould be useful, too, to tap my opponent's creatures.

Happy deck-building! Be sure to let us know when you have things tweaked, and how it plays when you get to that stage.

Click on the name of the trading partner to access their profile. Then click the Trade link at the top, between the user's name and the Add as Friend link.

When I'm trying to find a possible trade, I use my middle mouse button (you can also click both left and right buttons simultaneously) to open the person's profile in a new tab.  Then, after I've added a dozen or more, I go through tab by tab to see if things look good. [The number of tabs you can open at once will depend on the type of device you are using and the amount of RAM available.]

Happy trading!

While it sounds simple, I believe it would require quite a bit. You likely pay different amounts each time you get a card. Then, when trading, if you acquire a card as part of a larger trade, if the trade is not exactly 1:1 on value, you'd need to calculate the cost of that card coming in from your trade.

On the back end, there would be much more storage required by the folks at Deckbox (potentially, every card having a unique entry--though not all would likely go to that level of detail). Storage may be cheap, but hosted storage is not necessarily so, especially for a free (ad-supported) service.

If you have multiple copies of a card that you purchased at different times, when it comes time to trade, do you want to look at each individual cost, or some average of them all?

I keep track of my overall spend in my personal accounting software (e.g., MS Money, Quicken, Mint). I just create a category for Hobbies: MtG. Then I know how much I've spent in a given year, and I can compare that against the value of my collection (and how much it changed during the past 12 months).

I'm not suggesting it is impossible, or that Sebi will nix the idea, but am just the type of person who often sees beyond the immediate request, and thinks of the long-term impact.

Cheers!

For now, if you go directly to the card page, there is a list of potential trading partners who have that card near the bottom of the page.

Sebi, Laura, and the gang are working on significant changes to the trade interface, to include better searching/filtering options.  I hope my little tip helps for now.

Since MtG: Gatecrash has released, I've changed the default set in the Import dialog at least three times.  It never sticks--it always reverts to M13.  Is it a bug?
