Omnath prevents mana from leaving the mana pool. Normally, mana is emptied from the pool after each step/phase.
If Omnath dies in combat (or whenver), he no longer prevents mana from leaving your pool. However, as long as the step/phase does not end, that mana is still available to you, meaning you'll be able to spend 4 to activate Deathmantle's ability. Omnath comes back, meaning your remaining mana doesn't empty when the step/phase ends.
