Anax has one job: generate lots of Satyrs. To make this happen, I'll be making sure creatures I control die as much as possible. I'll need creatures that want to die as well as ways to steal creatures for just long enough that they die while they're on my side of the battlefield. Various ways to sacrifice said creatures will be welcome, of course. Once I do that, I'll do my best to take advantage of creatures dying and entering the battlefield as much as possible.
If you're looking for a creature that wants to die, look no further than Squee, the Immortal. You just can't get rid of him, and that means he's a great mana sink once a sacrifice outlet is in play. Play him, sac him, get a token, repeat!
Since Anax generates so many tokens, why not take advantage of that fact? You already know about Cavalcade of Calamity, but perhaps you've forgotten about the gem that is Raid Bombardment. Redundancy is important when you're building a deck like this, and both Raid Bombardment and Cavalcade of Calamity should be at the top of your list in terms of powerful effects. Obviously these go well with Torbran, my favorite red card in recent memory, so he makes the cut too.
With so many tokens entering the battlefield, Impact Tremors is an obvious choice. Warstorm Surge also makes my list, though it's much costlier, and Purphoros, God of the Forge was certainly on my mind as well. I'm also including plenty of cards that trigger when our creatures die, like Hissing Iguanar, Rage Thrower, Stalking Vengeance, and Vicious Shadows.
Dark-Dweller Oracle is a fantastic sacrifice outlet that doesn't get enough press. It's a great way to get some virtual card draws while tossing some Satyrs in the trash. Of course, cards like Goblin Bombardment, Barrage of Expendables, Makeshift Munitions, and similar will be making appearances in the list alongside classics like Ashnod's Altar and Thermopod.
I need some ways to grab lots of creatures at once, so I reached for one of my favorite cards: Mob Rule. It's a mini-Insurrection that, at six mana, is much easier to cast and does whatever is most important at the time - you either get quantity (power 3 or less) or quality (power 4 or more), and the bar for quality is the same as Anax's bar for two Satyrs on death... a fantastic coincidence. There will be plenty more effects that let us steal creatures, including the actual Insurrection, but this one is a card I've loved for a long time - I think I put it into a truly terrible Shimatsu the Bloodcloaked deck once.
Now that you've seen a slice of the deck, why not check out the whole list? Please feel free to shout at me on Twitter about not including your favorite card that will transform the whole list into some sort of doom engine. Anax might be better as a role player in a Purphoros deck, but I wanted to experiment with something a little different, and I'm excited to see how it plays when I try it out soon.
