Once the SCG order arrives, I should be able to build this out and use it - I'm skeptical that it will be a consistent or overpowering deck or anything like that but getting a win with it doesn't seem impossible. Adding ramp has a double benefit - not only does it make Myrkul possible as early as turn 4, but Nyxbloom would also be possible that fast and having that online speeds everything up immensely. One thing that I've found with the way I tend to play Magic is that I am really bad about leaving mana open - which means I'm going to struggle to pilot Vadrik well. :P Having the ability to respond in some way to pre-Myrkul boardwipes is probably going to be pretty important.

Most of the Myrkul lists I saw on MTGGoldfish were kind of Abzan goodstuff builds, where the super-expensive decks were super-expensive because they included all of the token doublers and a bunch of expensive lands, too. No one else was going for Gates - weird. I'm happy with the fact, then, that I won't be playing a stock Myrkul build; it's not a super-budget version but it's not blinged out either. And it takes a different tactic when it comes to winning - even as regards Devo combos. Might not be the smartest or most effective method but that's probably the way I'd like it to be anyway.

Did some reading about Myrkul and found that there are LOADS of decks trying to abuse Devoted Druid, so that's a little bit less fun. However, if you can find a way to animate a Planeswalker you get enchantments with loyalty abilities, which sounds weird and like a hoot. (Apparently you can also use manifest abilities, since the creature dies, goes to the graveyard (now face up as a PW), and is then exiled and a copy is made. Myrkul is a thief, taking big chunks out of all these other decks. Kadena might have to go on the shelf for a bit.)

The manifest - PW plan needs to be a down-the-road update; it's a strategy that will take some work and card-sourcing and I'm not at the point of waiting until it all comes together. Just want to play!

As usual, this deck is at the point of trying to do several things (I'm adding in the Gates from Go-Shintai just for lulz) and will probably fail at all of them when all is said and done. That being said I think I'll poke around and see if GMR has a copy of Luxior. If not, I've got to get that SCG order in for Halo Fountain and the like anyway.

I'm dismantling Go-Shintai as soon as the next batch of cards is secured - that should give enough pieces to go forward with for Myrkul.  I'm considering the possibility of incorporating the compatible Shrines just to maximize the Enchantress effects, and I'll need to put as much ramp as I can fit in because Myrkul is expensive af. I would imagine there's a bit of a delicate balance between ramp, enchantments, and creatures that benefit from Myrkul's effect (and boardwipes, can't forget those).

In the short-term it seems like a decent idea to make use of mana dorks and the like that can get Myrkul online as fast as possible.

I made a deck with Myrkul as the commander in Forge and I think I even exported the deck list to see if Paul had any of the cards hanging around; it seems like such a wonky and weird deck that I would absolutely love playing it.
List has been imported and pruned a little (Serra's Sanctum? I mean come on) to make the deck more reasonable.
How the deck is supposed to work: do what you can to ramp up until you can get Myrkul out, then boardwipe (there are many in here). Whatever creatures you have out should turn into enchantments and stick around; if you happen to have Bastion Protector or some other way to make Myrkul survive the wipe you'll be golden.
Once that has all been accomplished, dig around for one of the Defiant Bloodlord-style effects and start gaining as much life as you can (and hit the opponents while you're at it).
It wasn't spectacularly effective in Forge playing head-up against the AI, but I definitely enjoyed getting it online when I could. I'll keep working on this decklist and poke around EDHRec to see if there are new toys for it.

    Played this one as the second of three commanders used last night; Tayam was first and Obeka last. Interestingly enough, the tables turned - Myrkul got wiped out (by Stephen, but it was the poison counters deck rather than the Superfriends) before even getting to untap with him but Obeka performed significantly better. 

    The ramp in here is solid; I was able to get things moving quickly - I did get stuck for a couple of turns at 6 mana because I chump-blocked one of Stephen's little Toxic guys with a mana dork - but it just didn't work out as Stephen was able to get me from one to ten poison counters in a single turn. Alas. 

    Don't think there's anything that needs major alterations; maybe just need to do the board wipe first (like with mana floating or something) and then drop Myrkul to keep from getting wiped out.

    Myrkul got deployed for the first time the same night as Obeka's less-than-stellar debut (which was user error more than deck problem) and had basically the opposite experience - the Lord of Bones made an infinite combo happen with Devo and was able to eventually draw into Goblin Cannon and zap the other two guys. 

    It was cool, although I did feel a little bad about having it come online without really giving a chance to the other players - not a very interaction-heavy game. I think it would make sense to bring BoneLord out when playing against Stephen's SuperFriends or things like that and see if we can repeat the performance.

    So Heroic Intervention is a very strong and useful card to prevent things from being destroyed or targeted, but something like Farewell or Cyclonic Rift are still a rough go. That's usually the case anyway, but it would be pretty much gg if I had a board established and then had someone drop one of those. 


    I do think that having some level - even a very small level - of graveyard recursion would probably be worth doing; maybe Dryad's Revival (I'm pretty sure I have at least one of those)?

    That might not be the way this manabase looks going forward - if I attempt to actually build Volrath it would make more sense there as Keene is fine in Sultai. Kinda feeling like the next few purchases, whenever I get to a place where I'll let myself buy more stuff, should be useful lands rather than building new decks.

    I did want to spell out how this deck is supposed to win, because it's about as stupid and spectacular of a win-con as I've come up with so far.

    1. Ramp up to Myrkul. Play Devoted Druid and THB Nylea.

    2. With Devo as an enchantment, you've now got infinite green mana, and Nylea can be used to dig for Oracle of Nectars and either the Bloodlord or Vito.

    3. Get the Oracle and B or V on the board, then sac them (several outlets available) or wipe the board (several of those too) so they'll come back as token enchantments. (Technically they don't have to be sac'd but it makes a lot more sense because you can use the Oracle right away; it's not subject to summoning sickness if it's an enchantment).

    4. Activate OoN with an arbitrarily large amount of mana, gaining tons of life and pinging someone more than enough times to kill them. 

    Easy, right? The utter convolution of it is what makes me so excited to try and build this. 


    A ton of the pieces here are currently being used by Go-Shintai, so I'm thinking only one of those decks can be ready to go at a time. That's fine. Maybe I put like a bunch of pieces of the KHM Elf precon in place of the Enchantress/mana boosting stuff that both decks want. 

    But, this deck has some pretty necessary pieces that I don't currently own, so I'll have to make a note and keep my eyes peeled for them.
