This is about causing life loss through various means. Spirits were a natural choice to pair with Devouring Greed. There are plenty of ways to get this working, but sometimes I grabbed cards (Callous Deceiver, for instance) that were there to fill out the spirit count. The resulting 6/19/10/3 curves averages out to 2.26, which keeps things moving.
