I'm feeling this out, but top down is tricky. Like an equipment subtheme makes sense, as does an instant/Sorcery spells approach complete with rituals. Both require some dedication, and I'm not sure the deck supports both well. We are already rife with conflicts over this and our "easy core essentials" are anything but. Perfect flavor fits in both directions, hard to have them all though. Like look at excalibur. Perfect for Roland's "Big iron" and the line of eld, historic matters makes sense, and it's big punch is iconic for the gun. However vigilance is a non bo with Roland, and having a decent amount of historic cards to make this cheap may be difficult if we are using spells as our enablers. Glamdring fits better this way, and is a nice compliment to once and future, "firing" spells. But it's just hard to give up big iron, you see my dilemma? Another one is the Kaldra series. We can make them the Gunslinger's Cree! And they Summon Steven Deshain. How fucking cool, flavorful, and synergistic. But the CMC, the pre combat desire to equip, and the need for equipment tutors makes this a heavy ask for the deck. Like the tutors work out, but they will always play clunky, and often a piece is gonna exiled and that's going to feel shitty. i might include pull from eternity but that's TBD. It may be too thin a line, but I'm going to start with the Instant sorcery side as Roland wants this, and we can always leave a few flavorful equipment otherwise. In any case we want the curve low, as when we are firing we are exiling a good amount of cards that need to be played this turn. We also need to limit using the pre-combat main phase, and instant speed everything as much as possible. And we are going to priortize modal spells that give us a combat trick and a proactive mode, to appease roland and make it so our "guns" that fire after combat damage have no diffuculty doing so and net us benefit. Like go to combat, a bunch of shit happens from tricks, and post combat we reap value. This is also easiar to do if our enablers are cheap instant and sorceries, raises our floor.
The desert sub theme was great, but deserts suck, and I'm not sure if the the tap a creature lands even make the cut. With the direction of wanting to use recursion spells as ramp spells and abuse harrow effects, sac lands make sense, and being predominantly basics. I think at least ten fetches to have one in every top 15, and twelve is better to reduce the fail rate. Basics should be 2-1 if we are going to also fetch repeatedly, so 20-10, or 24-12.
